While Acclaim obviously hopes to launch a new character into the video game pantheon with Vexx, don't expect another cuddly sprite who would be at home in a Looney Tunes cartoon. There is something decidedly twisted about Vexx. It might have something to do with his witnessing of the murder of his grandfather. After discovering hidden Astani war talons--which permanently attach to Vexx's arms--he is charged with avenging his grandfather's death, freeing his fellow villagers from slavery, and ridding the universe of the evil Dark Yabu. But focusing on the game's story line misses the point of this platform game. Soon after the long and elaborately animated introduction ends, cut scenes fade into obscurity and the running, jumping, flipping, kicking, and smashing begin. Playing as Vexx, you collect Wraith hearts. The Wraiths themselves have been destroyed somehow--a story point that isn't too clear--but their force-feedback beating hearts remain. By gathering their energy, you power up the central hub that in turn opens doors to different worlds--from ice-encrusted wastelands and lush forests to hilly deserts and underwater oases. The graphics and music in each new world, as well as the many miniworlds hidden within, are often breathtaking. At times, you easily become distracted, taking a break from world-saving responsibility to hop into a pool for a swim or perch on top of some pole just to get a good look around. The controls are fairly straightforward, although occasionally a near-impossible move sequence is needed to propel Vexx up to the next wobbling platform. The puzzles that lead to each heart can be challenging, if not downright frustrating, but there are enough available that you can always go play somewhere else. There are 81 hearts scattered throughout the game, but only 60 are required to battle Dark Yabu. The creatures in each world are easy to slaughter, only a nuisance if they attack at the wrong time or en masse. Those seeking more of Minimize

Racing games are typically sorted into one of two categories: simulation racers (such as Gran Turismo) or arcade racers (such as Ridge Racer). Apex could easily fit into both categories. It breaks so many traditional driving game rules that it almost qualifies as its own genre. Unlike most racing games Apex has elements of role playing game progression: your in-game persona improves as you achieve success on the track. At the start of the game players will find themselves in charge of a dinky garage manned by a generic stubbly-faced mechanic. Successful performance in a race will drive "sales" of whatever type of car you're racing; this has two big effects. First, you'll notice your garage gradually transform from a two-man shack to a large assembly facility staffed by a variety of new personalities. Second, sales points can be saved and spent on research and development of new, high-performance cars. The races themselves progress in a fairly standard manner, with a series of cups and circuits that unlock new cups and circuits as you complete them. Completion of races in the single player "Dream Mode" will unlock cars and tracks for use in the multi player "Arcade Mode." Graphically Apex is everything you'd expect out of a modern Xbox game, with pixel shading and reflective surfaces to spare. One of the highlights of the game is the incredibly well done race environments. They're consistently life-like and just plain fun to drive. If the game suffers in any one area it's the controls, which manage to be neither as realistic as a racing sim nor as simple as an arcade racer. It's a strange mix between the two genres and takes some getting used to, and there are a few aspects of the physics of racing (like taking hairpin corners or making contact with other cars) that just feels wrong. We could talk about the Serious Sam backstory, but that would be missing the point, namely to commit carnage on a galactic scale. The smooth engine, multiplayer options, and fast pace make this game a solid choice for fans of first-person shooters. The interface uses the tried-and-true Xbox formula for shooters: the left thumbstick controls movement and the right thumbstick controls the angle of view. The extensive arsenal is something special though, with each weapon possessing a different efficiency so you have to find the perfect weapon quickly for each situation. For instance, the shotgun is a great weapon for up-close fighting among a crowd of enemies, but it's horrible at a distance or when you're stuck in the middle of a melee. The enemy list is also quite extensive. You will be fired upon, stepped on, stabbed, slashed, and electrocuted. Enemies will appear by land, air, and water. What makes this game stand out and keep you interested, though, is its irreverent, offbeat sense of humor. Serious Sam makes outlandish comments throughout the game, rides cosmic surfboards between scenes, saves progress at Dr. Who-like telephone booths, and pays homage to the Indiana Jones theme song. And you can change the blood splatters between red, green, and hippy (flowers and fruit). Our only major complaint is level design. Even when you believe you've cleared a room, enemies can pop out of midair and injure you. By not allowing you to seal yourself off from the onrushing masses in appropriate spaces, a major strategic element has been missed. --Eric Franklin Minimize

When Microsoft released NFL Fever 2000 on the PC in 1999, it gave Madden a serious run for its money. It's been a few years, but Fever and Madden are once again going head-to-head on the Xbox, and once again Fever proves itself a serious threat to EA's perennial football powerhouse. That's not to say that NFL Fever 2002 is a perfect game, because it isn't, but it does offer great graphics, decent AI, and plenty of bone-crunching gameplay. NFL Fever 2002 features several gameplay modes, including practice, single game, and season, which itself contains a couple of different options, including dynasty and fantasy challenge. Fever 2002 has a full NFL license and includes all 31 current NFL teams--and 15 fantasy teams--along with all the current stadiums. Dynasty mode is where most players will find themselves, as this mode lets you manage all aspects of your team, including signing and cutting players, negotiating trades, and making sure that your team comes in under the salary cap. A great feature in dynasty mode is Dynamic Player Performance, which adjusts players' ratings (which determine how well they play) based on past game performances. So if you have a second-string running back who rattles off three or four great games in a row, his rating will increase, which should keep him performing at that high level. On the flip side, if a player has several poor games, his rating will decrease. Because it was designed specifically for the Xbox (unlike Madden NFL 2002, which was ported to the Xbox from the PlayStation2 version), NFL Fever 2002 looks awesome.
