I am not one who typically plays a Top Flite golf ball. I prefer the way too expensive Titleist Pro-V1X balls because of their feel and distance. However, the driving range where I get in most of my practice has recently refurbished their supply of golf balls and the Top Flite XL3000 Super Long ball was the ball of choice. Hence, I have come to know this ball well.
I have also come to know two things about this ball: It is long and it has less feel than a piece of cement. What does this mean to you, the golfer who is trying to improve his or her game?
First of all, it means you will be able to launch some very long drives and iron shots. The ball really does get off the club face quickly and makes a louder than normal sound while doing so. I guess I hit this ball 10 yards further than the Pro V1X ball. I also hit it higher than the Pro V1X and, according to all the publications and teachings of late, height is the important factor distance. Either way, I hit it a long way.
I also cannot work or develop a slight bit of feel with this ball. I try to hit my favored draw and nothing happens. I try to hit a fade and nothing happens. Nothing. Nada. The feel of the ball on the club face is even worse. The ball feels like I am hitting a piece of round concrete.
I have yet to try this ball around the greens- where feel and touch are even more important- but would guess it provides the same type of feeling as with the full swing. I would also assume that the ball has zero bite to it.
Would I purchase this ball? Not a chance. But that does not mean that this ball is not for you. The better player needs a ball that offers more in the way of feel. A weekend player or someone with a handicap over 18 can certainly get by with this ball. This type of player should not be spending $50+ to purchase a ball like the Pro V1X that will not improve his or her game a bit. An $18 ball like the XL3000 will provide everything you need in order to enjoy the game and improve.
I recommend this ball for those who have handicaps over 18 and those who are only looking to add distance to their games. Otherwise, skip it.
