hard to install, but worth the trouble

Author's Rating: 5/5 stars

Pros: sleek design, larger than average capacity, cleans very well, "sanitize" feature, flexible load functions

Cons: hard to install, stainless finish is easy to smudge, plastic doesn't dry well

The Bottom Line:
Sleek look, quiet operation, squeaky clean dishes. Interior size big enough to wash your turkey pan (if you want to). It is hard to install, but well worth the trouble.

Author's Review
We really like this washer for a few reasons:
(1) cleans well - I have yet to pull a dirty dish out of this.
(2) nice looking - we like the sleek "controls on top" look
(3) huge capacity - much more than the average washer
(4) flexible interior - you can raise the upper rack so that you can fit big things on the bottom, you can remove or fold down the rows of spines so that you can fit weird shaped things in there.
(5) flexible cycles - you can run only the top rack, only the bottom wrack, or both - also, you can have each rack use a different spray intensity (e.g. you can have your crusty pots and pans on the bottom set to "strong" and your dainty champagne flutes on the top set to "soft", in the same load).

Some other features:
- Start delay: a wash cycle can be delayed by up to 24 hours, in one hour increments
- Water heater - heats water to proper temperature. Also has a sanitizing rinse: if selected, the rinse cycle can heat the water to 160 degrees.
- Built in food grinder - means no filter to clean out
- IllumiTub interior lighting - faint blue lights inside are gimmicky and of little value in my opinion (although my wife likes them)
- Wash modes: (note: each cycle has various different water temperatures associated with it)
-- soak [5.5-9.2 gallons, 143-191 minutes]
-- power scrub [5.5-9.2 gallons, 123-171 minutes]
-- normal [2.6-6.9 gallons, 101-135 minutes]
-- delicate [5.5-6.9 gallons, 103-120 minutes]
-- quick [5.5 gallons, 74 minutes]
-- rinse only [1.3 gallons, 14 minutes]

Regarding installation:

One of the ways that LG gets such a big interior is by making the tub go almost all the way down to the floor - that is to say that there is no space under the unit (in the "toe kick" area) like there typically is on a dishwasher.

As a result of this, the discharge is near the floor, and the power and water supply lines connect in the front of the unit, and get routed to the back of the unit via a small channel.

Since there is no space underneath, you will need to pull it out to level it - which is a pain.

Also, if you are replacing a dishwasher, the hole(s) cut into the cabinet are most likely not in the right spot. As already mentioned, the discharge and supply/power are at the floor level, not up 4" like usual. We had to drill two new holes to accommodate this.

If you buy this from a "big box" store, I highly recommend you pay them to do the installation - it costs less than $50 and is well worth the money.

Operational sound level:
The unit is advertised as 46dB... which means it is quiet, but not silent. It is really pretty quiet, and hard to hear, even when we are standing in kitchen - the loudest thing I hear is a water trickling sound (which I thought was a leak the first time I heard it).

Drying:
We find the drying cycle to be adequate. We have not experienced the floor moistening output - ours seems fine. It doesn't do a very good job drying plastic - I'm not sure any dishwashers really do a very good job at this, do they?

Regarding the stainless steel finish:
It is super easy to smudge this finish. It has got to be one of the worst in this respect. We found some spray on stainless cleaner that helped this a lot - before we started using the cleaner, it seemed that if you just looked at the unit it got smudged and drippy looking. Now, it stays pretty clean looking.

Regarding the controls: while the unit is pretty easy to use in the "normal" mode (just press "start" and close the door), using some of the other features requires a quick read through the manual. For example, they replaced the very intuitive "rinse aid empty" words (present in the previous version) with a little asterisky looking thing (???).
