Enhanced comfort, more power and new safety features are the headlines for the 2006 Ford Explorer. Drive this latest Explorer against an earlier version and you'll likely notice that it's quieter and more refined. Ford added additional sound insulation to reduce road noise and revised the Explorer's suspension and frame for improved ride quality. There are other mechanical changes, as well, such as upgraded brakes (now with EBD and brake assist) and a steering rack that reduces the effort required to turn the steering wheel at low speeds. Heavily revised for 2006: has Ford addressed my criticisms?

Author's Rating: 4/5 stars

Pros: Vastly improved structural rigidity and ride quality, upgraded interior, stronger engine

Cons: Interior a bit overdone, exterior way overdone, awkward door grips

Bottom Line:
The 2006 revisions produce a much better vehicle. If only some of the styling changes weren't overdone. Read More

2006 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition 4x2

Author's Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Excellent handling, good engine power, solid feel, plenty of "luxury" appointments.

Cons: Minor reliability issues.

Bottom Line:
Good, solid SUV with excellent handling, but needed a few repairs. I recommend this SUV for it's performance, but it may need to have a little work done at times. Read More

2006 Explorer - two years later

Author's Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Truck like setup in the interior. 3rd row is actually usable.

Cons: Traction control. Seats are hard as a rock. Interior door handles out of reach.

Bottom Line:
Don't know that I can recommend the Explorer. Con's outweigh the pros. Maybe mine is just the 'lemon' but I'm not so sure. Read More

Ford Explorer 2006

Author's Rating: 3/5 stars

Pros: Has clearance underneath and power to tow boat or trailers.

Cons: Wheel design that collects mud, causes vibration and unbalance. Gas tank on passenger side.

Bottom Line:
This vehicle is not appropriate for non-paved roads, farm use, or construction sites. There are better choices for fuel economy and such if you drive only paved roads. Read More
