First seen in Detroit, the aerodynamic curves of Mitsubishis shapely Eclipse Concept-E merely hint at its true performance potential. An all-wheel-drive configuration in which parallel engines provide constant power to both the front and rear axles, even when shifting, makes the 2+2 coupe a high-tech study in hybrid engine mechanics. Plasma running lights and taillights, neon crackle-tube indicators and brake lights, and a glass roof that offers ambient luminescence make this fourth-gen Eclipse an artful study in lighting. Front wheels are powered by a 3.8-liter/270-hp MIVEC V-6 engine and rear wheels get an extra 200-horse push from an E-Boost electric motor sending a total of 470 horsepower to the six-speed automated manual transmission. Consider the concept an over-the-top prelude to the production car. The all-new Eclipse will be built in Illinois on the SS platform shared by the Montero Sport and Galant. A convertible Spyder model will follow.
