Don't Bother Trying to Return Your Adjustable Bed
|
|
I bought an $1,800 Queen-sized electric adjustable bed from Golden Rest's online store. I did it to please my wife as she has always wanted this type of bed. Although pleased with my desire to please her, my wife preferred a bed with independent controls. Therefore, I decided to purchase a king-sized bed with plans to return the queen-size bed. I talked with a sales rep about keeping the queen-size until the king-size bed arrived. After nearly nearly 3 weeks, we got a call from the shipper that the bed had arrived. To make a long story short, we spent a couple more weeks trying to get the shipper to hold the king while we dealt with Golden Rest reps to arrange for packing and pickup of the queen. At times, responses from the reps were prompt. At other times several days elapsed. Bottom line: because the setup men had removed the plastic wrap from the mattress, we could not get credit for it; subtract $800 from the cost of the bed. Before buying the bed I had read the return policy. I was aware that I would have to pay round trip shipping cost; subtract $640. I was also aware that a bed return incurred a 15% restocking fee; subtract nearly $270 more. Let's do the math: $1,800 (purchase price) - $800 (mattress) - $270 (restock fee) - $640 (shipping) = about $100 (what Golden Rest would give me for the bed). Obviously I did what they wanted: kept the bed. I would have returned the king-size bed and kept the queen except that my wife wanted the king, which will be delivered in 4 days. I was aware I'd incur a heavy discount for returning the bed. However, getting no credit for the mattress was entirely unexpected. The web site says that returned mattresses will not be accepted if they are torn, stained or have odor. It does not say that the mattress must still be in it's shipping wrap! To be fair, the rep said that Golden Rest would give me $600 for the returned bed. However, I find it hard to believe that their mathematical ability is any worse than mine; I don't trust them because the numbers don't add up as I have demonstrated!
As for the bed itself, the electric motor quietly adjusts head and foot angles. The massaging element of the motor works well and has about 3 different settings. The queen-size bed I bought had a low end mattress ($800!) which I found to be too firm for my comfort. A topper would probably make it satisfactory (more $$).
The first bed was delivered in about 10 days. The setup crew quickly got the bed assembled. One of the 2 setup men pushed a few buttons on the controller to show me the bed was operational and raced away saying, "Enjoy your bed". I can't blame the setup men for ripping the plastic wrap off the mattress. I blame Golden Rest for not making them aware that they should at least tell the consumer that the mattress cannot be returned if the protective wrap is removed. Believe me that plastic will stay on the king-size bed until we are certain we want it!
Soon we will have two adjustable beds when we only need one; kids long gone. If we keep both, we'll have paid about as much as my wife paid for her used car 5 years ago (5 grand).
The moral of this story? Husbands don't try to surprise your wife. Get them involved in a costly purchase.
