Ten years after the publication of the highly acclaimed, award-winning Côte D'Or: A Celebration of the Great Wines of Burgundy, the "Bible of Burgundy," Clive Coates now offers this thoroughly revised and updated sequel. This long-awaited work details all the major vintages from 2006 back to 1959 and includes thousands of recent tasting notes of the top wines. All-new chapters on Chablis and Côte Chalonnaise replace the previous volume's domaine profiles. Coates, a Master of Wine who has spent much of the last thirty years in Burgundy, considers it to be the most exciting, complex, and intractable wine region in the world, and the one most likely to yield fine wines of elegance and finesse. This book is an indispensable guide for amateur and professional alike by one of the world's leading wine experts, writing with his habitual expertise, lucidity, and unequaled firsthand knowledge.

This wine is from France, Burgundy region, Cote De Nuits sub-region and Nuits St Georges appellation. In 2006, Pascal Marchand, who had forged an international reputation as a brilliant winemaker over more than two decades, launched a new Burgundian micro-negociant business under his own name. A native of Montreal and an adventurer at heart, Pascal began his career in wine working the harvest at Chateau de Chorey-les-Beaune in Burgundy in 1983. He returned the following year and quickly established himself as one of the region's rising stars after being hired by the Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard. Little known before then, the Domaine and its Premier Cru monopole vineyard Clos des Epeneaux quickly gained renown and Pascal's wines became recognized by prominent journalists and aficionados as reference points for Pinot Noir's modern style. After 15 years at Comte Armand, he took on a new challenge in 1999, working with the Boisset family to launch their showcase estate, the Domaine de la Vougeraie - one of the most ambitious projects the region had seen since World War II. The association with the Boissets also led Pascal to further expand his horizons, consulting on their projects in Beaujolais, Minervois, California, Canada and South America. Since leaving the Boisset group in 2006, Pascal has established himself independently as a winemaker and consultant - in Burgundy at Domaine Jean Fery et Fils; in Sonoma, California at Joseph Phelps' Freestone Winery; in Niagra, Canada at Tawse Winery; in Australia at Carlei in South Yarra and Heathcote, Prancing Horse in Mornington Peninsula, Turner's Crossing in Bendigo, and with his own brand Marchand & Burch, which he founded with his friend Jeff Burch in Western Australia. Finally, he continues to work with VC Family Estate in Chile and Argentina, whose collection of brands includes Veranda, a brand Pascal had launched with Boisset in 2002. Today, Pascal's personal passion and commitment to working with Burgundy's most distinctive terroirs is realized through his new negociant business, which has grown to encompass 36 appellations of the Cotes de Nuits and a few, mainly for white wines, from the Cotes de Beaune. The production, which has reached 6,000 cases, is now being marketed under a new label: Marchand & Tawse, since Pascal formed a partnership with long-time friend and business associate Moray Tawse. The fruit for these wines is sourced from growers Pascal knows and trusts, and vineyards with a minimum of 35 years of age. All are perfectly maintained. Many are farmed organically, which is not surprising since Pascal has been a leader in the use of organic and biodynamic methods through the years. All of his operations are carried out according to the lunar calendar. The wines are vinified and matured in cellars in the heart of Nuits-St.-Georges, using barrels selected from two specialized artisanal coopers. The wood is selected from the best plots in the forests of Alliers, Cher, Compeigne, Fontainbleau, Jupille and Oise. The staves are seasoned for 4-5 years and the barrels are toasted very lightly and slowly. The wines speak directly of their origins and of the sensitivity Pascal has cultivated throughout his remarkable career. PINOT NOIR Wine French Still Wine

This wine is from France, Burgundy region, Cote De Beaune sub-region and Pommard appellation. In the world of wine, Pommard hardly needs an introduction. From time immemorial, Pommard has been the site of famous vineyards. Around the year 1 000, the whole side facing South-East was covered with vines. According to tradition, it already produced a wine reputed for its depth of colour and its ability to travel far and wide. To-day, Pommard is one of the largest villages in Burgundy. The village is on a slope, in the middle of a group of vineyards facing East or South-East. The soil, a mixture of red clay and limestone, is responsible for the wine's original qualities : good colour, intense bouquet and firm structure. Pommard can only be a red wine, produced from the Pinot Noir grape. To insure low yields, the vines are pruned very short, in the Guyot style. The grapes are picked by hand and put in small crates to avoid damage during transportation to the winery. The fermentation occurs in open wooden or stainless steel fermenters. The total maceration generally lasts 15 to 18 days. The wine is kept in barrels for 18 months before bottling. According to the vintage, it is sometimes better to wait at least two years before drinking the wine. . Pommard has a lovely and powerful complex nose reminiscent of black cherries and spices. On the palate, it has a good structure with generous fruit and subtle tannins.. This great red Burgundy deserves a more traditional cuisine : red meat in light sauces, game, venison and ripe cheeses will create a rich tapestry of flavours worthy of a medieval feast. "The vine and its wine are a great mystery. Only the vine reveals to us what is the real taste of the earth," writes Colette. In this sumptuously illustrated and wonderfully informative book, Jacques Fanet invites us on an entertaining tour of the world's most celebrated winegrowing regions to discover the characteristics of the bond that ties the vine to its place of birth: the terroir. Terroir is a uniquely French term for the subtle interaction of natural factors and human skills that define the characteristics of each winegrowing region.Interviewing growers and researchers in France, Spain, Italy, California, Chile, Australia, and South Africa, Fanet looks for the soil in the soul of each wine. He takes us back millions of years to show how movements in the ancient bedrock, faults, mountain building, tidal flow, sedimentation, and volcanic activity contribute to the precise and individual character of each terroir, making the great winegrowing regions what they are today. Great Wine Terroirs provides wine enthusiasts with everything they will want to know about different soils and climates, the relationship between international grape varieties and the soil in which they grow, and how these factors affect the taste of the wines.Color geological illustrations and timelines support the text and explain key phenomena. Fanet also provides a glossary, geographical index, and index of soil types and grape varieties. He explains enological practices and their effect on the terroirs and answers questions such as why the Châteauneuf plateau, almost 300 feet about the Rhône Valley, is surrounded by river alluvia and why there are fossilized oysters in the soils of Chablis. Those interested in the wine of California will find a lively discussion of the Napa Valley, with a detailed explanation of how the San Andreas fault, the Sierra Nevada, and the Great Central Valley have all played a part in creating the most spectacular wine-producing region on the continent.

For decades, David Downie and Alison Harris have been exploring Burgundy—they walked clear across it in 2006—reporting on their finds for top magazines and newspapers worldwide. This is the third Terroir Guide they have collaborated on and perhaps the most detailed and personal of any so far. Burgundy is one of France’s great food and wine regions. Many of the world’s most sought-after wines are produced there; so, too, are some of the most underrated, underpriced white wines in France. Each of Burgundy’s five wine districts is thoroughly explored in this guide, with recommendations on which wines to buy and which wineries to visit. Wine terminology is explained in a way that anyone can understand. On the food side, Burgundy still has a surprising number of luxurious restaurants, as well as dozens of country auberges visitors dream of discovering. Downie leads you to just such places, as well as to specialty food shops where you can taste the region’s terroir firsthand. Burgundy’s lush scenery distills the essence of French terroir, and each of its subregions has a distinctive character where the architecture and art reflect this storied diversity.

The heart of Burgundy, the Côte D'Or, produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that are unrivaled in their quality, intensity, and ability to age in the bottle. On this "golden slope" in eastern France, with its unique terrains and climats, grow the vines for some of the world's finest wines, among them such heralded names as Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Puligny- and Chassagne-Montrachet, and Aloxe-Corton. Clive Coates, Master of Wine, has spent much of the last fifteen years in the Côte D'Or, and this book is the splendid result of his assiduous exploring, tasting, and assessing of the region's wines. With his unique access to each clos and domaine, and to individual negociants and vignerons, Coates may know more about the Côte D'Or and its wines than any other living writer. In Part One, he describes the Côte D'Or's famous villages, introduces every manor grower and his wines, and evaluates each grand and premier cru, recommending the best sources in every climat. Part Two profiles the top sixty domaines, with notes on a vertical tasting of one of their wines. Part Three consists of vintage assessments on the best red and white years since 1945 and includes thousands of detailed tasting notes.Côte D'Or is a work of love and passion, praise and criticism, understanding and scholarship. Above all, it is a celebration of one of the world's great wine regions, the people who live there, and their fabled wines. It is an essential addition to every wine library and an inviting read for any wine lover.

By far France's largest fine-wine region, Bordeaux is also arguably its greatest, and perhaps the greatest in the world. Grands Vins is the most comprehensive survey of these wines ever published. Following an introduction detailing the history, the geography, the grape varieties, and other regional wine-making idiosyncrasies, Clive Coates--who is reputed to know more about the estates and their wines than the owners themselves--profiles the leading châteaux and assesses their top red and white wines. He discusses the respective qualities, taste characteristics and merits of just about every fine Bordeaux wine made in the last thirty years and more, listing its state of maturity and optimum drinking periods in succinct and accessible form.Since the publication of Clive Coates's Claret in 1982, the Bordeaux region has seen many changes. There has been a run of bumper, successful red-wine harvests unparalleled in recent times. Perfectionist control of the viticultural process is now commonplace not just at the top of the hierarchy but right down to cru bourgeois level, and the vineyards planted following the great February 1956 frost have reached full maturity, producing a quality and consistency that Bordeaux has until now never enjoyed. Moreover, a revival in the fortunes of Sauternes and a revolution in the techniques of dry-white wine making means that the quality of these wines matches that of the reds. For the historian, too, there is far more documentation available about the illustrious pasts of many Bordeaux châteaux than a decade ago; many estates have initiated long-overdue research into their archives, and scarce nineteenth-century books have been reprinted in facsimile.Essential reading for anyone who has cellared or intends to buy Bordeaux wines, Grands Vins is a lucid voyage through the histories of the leading estates, a convivial encounter with their personalities, a fascinating lesson in contemporary wine-making techniques, and above all a celebration of preeminent wines.

This wine is from France, Burgundy region, Bourgogne sub-region.
