This wine is from Italy, Friuli-venezia Giulia region. The Bastianich winery, founded in 1997, strives to understand the history and culture of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and take it to a new level. Restaurateur Joseph Bastianich with his mother, the renowned chef Lidia Bastianich, bought a vineyard in Buttrio, a town in the Colli Orientali DOC. The family is very precise in their winemaking, controlling yields so that each individual vine produces one bottle of wine. They employ traditional manual methods in the vineyard and create wines that express the character of the land.. Calabrone Grappa is distilled from the skins of Bastianich Calabrone -Pignolo, Refosco passito, Cabernet Franc passito, Merlot and CabernetSauvignon.. After distillation the grappa was aged in 100% stainlesssteel. Aromas of yeast, bread dough and dried red fruit. Plenty of glyceringives this grappa a soft mouth feel. Across the palate it opens to richnessand complexity, hinting at the apassimento fruit used to make thisgrappa. The finish is warm and very long without harshness. "The vine and its wine are a great mystery. Only the vine reveals to us what is the real taste of the earth," writes Colette. In this sumptuously illustrated and wonderfully informative book, Jacques Fanet invites us on an entertaining tour of the world's most celebrated winegrowing regions to discover the characteristics of the bond that ties the vine to its place of birth: the terroir. Terroir is a uniquely French term for the subtle interaction of natural factors and human skills that define the characteristics of each winegrowing region.Interviewing growers and researchers in France, Spain, Italy, California, Chile, Australia, and South Africa, Fanet looks for the soil in the soul of each wine. He takes us back millions of years to show how movements in the ancient bedrock, faults, mountain building, tidal flow, sedimentation, and volcanic activity contribute to the precise and individual character of each terroir, making the great winegrowing regions what they are today. Great Wine Terroirs provides wine enthusiasts with everything they will want to know about different soils and climates, the relationship between international grape varieties and the soil in which they grow, and how these factors affect the taste of the wines.Color geological illustrations and timelines support the text and explain key phenomena. Fanet also provides a glossary, geographical index, and index of soil types and grape varieties. He explains enological practices and their effect on the terroirs and answers questions such as why the Châteauneuf plateau, almost 300 feet about the Rhône Valley, is surrounded by river alluvia and why there are fossilized oysters in the soils of Chablis. Those interested in the wine of California will find a lively discussion of the Napa Valley, with a detailed explanation of how the San Andreas fault, the Sierra Nevada, and the Great Central Valley have all played a part in creating the most spectacular wine-producing region on the continent.

Wine Country Cooking is the culmination of years of the Gle
... Read more
Wine Country Cooking is the culmination of years of the Glenora enterprise's experience in wine, food, and hospitality. The book contains more than eighty recipes from Glenora s Executive Chef Orlando Rodriguez, grouped according to wine pairing suggestions by Glenora winemaker Steve DiFrancisco. Dishes included in the cookbook range from Cabernet-Braised Short Ribs to Gewurz-Steamed Littleneck Clams, and Riesling-Poached Peaches. Wine Country Cooking provides an exhilarating companion to the range of regional wines, matching the diversity of regional ingredients in sometimes surprising, always delightful ways, perfect for the home cook, whether cooking for entertainment, or just for the family. Glenora Wine Cellars was founded in Dundee, on the west shore of Seneca Lake, by grapegrowers Ed Dalrymple, Eastman Beers, and Gene Pierce. Over the past 32 years, the enterprise has distinguished itself with award winning wines and successfully grown to include a 30-room inn and Veraisons, a fine-dining restaurant with an outdoor dining patio and sweeping views of the vineyards. Chef Orlando Rodriguez graduated from the renowned Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and apprenticed with two of the country's top chefs, first with the award-winning Chef Brendan Walsh at the Elms Restaurant & Tavern, in Ridgefield, CT then, with Chef Albert DeAngelis at Mediterraneo, in Greenwich, CT, before joining the Glenora team. Today, Chef Rodriguez combines his talent for sophisticated American cuisine with local and regional nuances, creating a uniquely exquisite form of wine country fare, allowing the region's bounty to shine through in every entree, without fuss or overbearing technique. After earning a degree in Microbiology at Stetson University, Steve DiFrancesco became assistant to Guy DeVaux and Charles Fournier in their sparkling wine production at the old Gold Seal Vineyards. He moved to two more wineries, each time working his way up the responsibility ladder, before settling at Glenora Wine Cellars in 1995 as chief winemaker. At Glenora, his steady hand and full attention to detail, shines through in the award-winning production of classical Methode Champenoise. The book explores Steve's methods for the individual wines that appear next to Glenora's individual recipes, so that each chapter and page is an individual vinous delight of the fruits of Glenora Wine Cellars.

The mere mention of Château d’Yquem and its signature sweet white wine evokes an image of unparalleled luxury, distinction, and enduring excellence. It embodies the luminous golden essence of the finest and rarest of wines. This legendary appellation is the result of centuries of painstaking cultivation of the vines, a unique vinification process, and the exceptional site, soil, and micro-climate, combined with the notorious "noble rot" to create this peerless nectar. The wine’s long history of distinction dates back to the 1700s when Thomas Jefferson brought home more than 250 bottles to share with George Washington. Yquem has recently undergone a renaissance: the château and its gardens have been restored, and its status as the world’s greatest white wine has never been stronger. The rare nature of this fine wine, and its exceptional characteristic flavor, are honored in this fully updated volume.

Since the mid-1980s, Austrian wine production has been explosive--garnering stellar reviews, awards and record export revenues. Contemporary architects have found the country ripe with opportunity for further experimentation in the field of wine architecture, which emerged in Napa Valley in the 1990s and became renowned with the 2001 Pritzker Prize-winning, Herzog and de Meuron-designed Dominus Winery (deemed "a combination of sensorial and intellectual pleasure" by Pritzker judge Jorge Silvetti). This publication presents a selection of nearly 70 projects in Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria, and discusses how the combination of ground-breaking architecture--like the striking silver façade of Steven Holl-designed Loisium winery in Langenlois--and emerging wineries have been changing the face of the Austrian countryside for the past two decades. As Martin Rauchbauer, Deputy Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum, has observed, "The quality of wine architecture in Austria is seen as more than a transitory phenomenon. A new architectural language has developed, which cautiously takes into account traditional forms of building and at the same time presents self-confident interpretations of the requirements of contemporary winemaking."

For anyone who wants to understand the full story that lies within a glass of wine, this book opens up the inner secrets of the geology, the vineyards, the wines, and the growers of the northern Rhône Valley in France. Home to the spicy Syrah, or Shiraz, and the floral Viognier grapes, the northern Rhône Valley is one of France's oldest wine-growing regions; its appellations include Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Crozes-Hermitage, St-Joseph, and Château-Grillet. With evocative descriptions and marvelous insights, this accessible, elegant book, the culmination of more than thirty years following the Rhône, is a comprehensive and authoritative survey of the various estates, winemakers, and their wines.Taking a deeper look at the northern Rhône than Livingstone-Learmonth's highly regarded previous volumes on the Rhône Valley, this revised and up-to-date edition covers more producers and includes more in-depth information on the various terroirs, the histories of the wines, and the methods for making the wines. Livingstone-Learmonth concentrates on letting the producers explain their outlook and methods and includes much local color. The Wines of the Northern Rhône includes* Assessments of thousands of wines, with guide dates onwhen to drink and how long to age them* Winemakers' views on what foods best accompany their wines* New vineyard maps for each appellation* Detailed descriptions by growers discussing the effect of different soils on their wines* Precise information on how each domaine makes its wines* New research on the historical links between Hermitage and Bordeaux
