This wine is from France, Alsace region, Alsace Aoc sub-region. Planted in the heart of the HENGST vineyard, this wine is not authorised to have the Grand Cru appellation. The ”H” refers to the HENGST.The soil of the 360 meter high slope which dominates this vineyard is essentially a mixture of limestone from the Vosges, chalky marl (14% active) and layers of red, brown, green and beige sediment hundreds of meters thick. The mother rock is of an orange - yellow hue. Dating as far back as the Jurassic period the elements vary in density from very fine to very course. The Ph factor is within 7.8 to 8.3. This Grand Cru is 130.95 acres (53,02 Ha) of vines. The combined calcareous and marl soils tend to produce rich full bodied wines. In their youth they have an untamed character, reminiscent of the vineyard’s name - ”stallion”. They slowly mature to astonishing aromatics and fabulous richness.. The grapes were hand picked and whole-bunch pressed very slowly and gently in pneumatic presses over 5-8 hours to give a clean must and a beneficial amount of skin contact. Transferred to thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks the juice then began a natural fermentation using only its own natural yeast which lasted for one month. The fermentation was initially temperature controlled but was eventually allowed to proceed at its own pace to allow the wine to develop its own character and complexity. The wine stabilized in stainless steel tanks naturally during the winter season and, following a very gentle filtering, was bottled in March 2007 before the heat of summer to preserve the natural carbonic gas (a natural anti-oxidant). Malolactic fermentation is always avoided at Josmeyer and no chaptalization takes place.. This delicate white exhibits dried fruit flavors of pear and green apple, with a hint of petrol. There’s an underlying note of earth, and a spicy element weaves through the wine. Fresh.. Notes from Winemaker Chris Ringland - I blended Bitch Grenache Aragon 2009 from a selection of un-oaked Grenache wines from various sub-regions of Aragon and Navarra, around the Southern regions of the Ebro river valley. The climate is typical of inland Northern Spain; continental with very cold winters and hot, dry summers. Although rainfall varies considerably, depending on altitude, the annual average rainfall in Zaragoza, the regional capital of Aragon, is around 360mm or 14”, which is very low and comparable with the dry, inland viticultural climates of Southern Australia and the central valley of California. Soils vary considerably as well. They are typically alluvial, but zones of rich red-brown loams and white limestone are intermixed with very rocky slate at higher altitudes. Grenache (Garnacha) survives here without the need for irrigation. Yields are typically low and this, combined with a historical selection of small-berried, deeply colored clones, produces wines of a more ”masculine” expression of the variety. Dark cherry and raspberry aromas are underpinned with spicy, peppery notes with hints of anise. Aragon Grenache displays extraordinary natural acid balance, even at elevated ripeness levels. I have selected wines, which convey vibrant, juicy fruit together with a very soft, sweet-fruited palate structure. The key here, as I have found elsewhere with my winemaking experiences, is very gentle handling during the primary fermentation, with a big emphasis on very soft pressing of the fermented grape skins. While Aragon Grenache can take surprisingly well to quite lavish new oak during maturation, the style for Bitch Grenache is all about fruit aromas and flavors. Maturation without oak influence enhances the natural fruit expression of these selections. 2009 vintage in Northern Spain saw a continuation of warm, dry summers, with very little rainfall during the vintage months. Clean, slowly ripened grapes retained impeccable fruit and acid balance at harvest time. Bitch Aragon Grenache is very approachable now, but don’t be deceived into thinking that it won’t age. I predict that the wine will develop further personality with 3 to 5 years in the cellar.. Blended from a selection of unoaked Grenache wines from various subregions of Aragon and Navarra wherethe climate is continental and relatively dry. Soils are typically alluvial, but zones of rich red-brown loams andwhite limestone are intermixed with very rocky slate at higher altitudes. CASK 23, made only in exceptional vintages, is usually a blend of the most distinctive fruit from our S.L.V. and FAY estate vineyards. The story of CASK 23 began during the harvest of 1974. Back then, winery founder Warren Winiarski enlisted the help of celebrated winemakerAndre Tchelistcheff. As they tasted through various lots of new wines from that year, they noticed a distinct character in a lot from the center of Block 4, a character they described as “crushed violets'. It was so appealing that they decided to age this wine separately in a wooden cask, number 23. The wine was still so deliciously distinct after further aging in barrel, Warren decided to bottle it separately and give it a special name-CASK 23.. Much of S.L.V. has been replanted, but the vines in Block 4 from the original planting in 1972 still stand, and they continue to produce fruit of exquisite character. Over the years, we've identified other blocks and sub-blocks of our estate vineyards that consistently yield fruit ofexceptional quality, but the choice of which grapes go into CASK 23 is far from automatic. Dave was working at Barossa’s Rockford Winery when he began dreaming of his own wine label, dedicated to making wine from some of the valley’s oldest vines He helped a few area growers nurture some neglected, decades old Shiraz and Grenache vines back to health. Nearly lifeless and overgrown he was rewarded with a few small parcels of dry grown fruit, which he turned into wine. Contracts were then negotiated for the use of these vineyards with the individual growers, and so the old practice of share farming returned to the Valley. This secured for Torbreck a regular supply of the best Barossa Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro (Mourvedre) vineyards containing some of the oldest vines in the world, between 120 to 160 years old. His Torbreck label, named after a forest in Scotland, where he worked as a lumberjack, debuted in 1997 with the release of a small 1995 vintage. Yields are invariably low, and the resulting wines are deeply impressive. Torbreck wines, like the Cornas, Condrieu, and Hermitage that Powell holds up as inspiration, are muscular but not beefy, pleasurable even as they lean towards profound. The wines have been praised effusively since the beginning by the world's leading wine critics and journalists and are represented on the wine lists of the world's best restaurants. In 2008 the completion of a state of the art, eco-friendly winery, packaging and administration building has meant the realization of David's goal to have all Torbreck wines produced and bottled on the estate. Torbreck remains a Barossa Valley benchmark as well as one of the world's leading wine estates.. The wine spends two years in old oak barrels, with a mix of American and French oak. Fantastic.. In 1992, the first vines were planted at Tom Stolpman’s 220 acre estate in the hills of Ballard Canyon in Santa Ynez, California. The combination of climate which balances mid-day heat with cool foggy mornings and late afternoon ocean breezes, north-south exposure, and well drained limestone soils provides a terroir uniquely suited to growing Syrah, Sangiovese, and Roussanne. Out of 150 acres of vines planted, 100 are devoted to Syrah. Stolpman’s alliance with Domaine Rostaing in Cote Rotie emphasizes their commitment to the varietal and bridges the gap between old and new world styles. Winemaker Sashi Moorman worked as a chef and later honed his winemaking skills at Ojai Vineyards for five years before joining Stolpman in 2001. Italian wine consultant Albert Antonini has advised the Stoplmans for the past decade and is credited with persuading the them to dry farm the vineyard, despite the risk of weakening the vines. Stolpman’s climate-controlled winery in Lompoc is outfitted with state of the art winemaking equipment. White grapes are sorted and pressed, after which their juice goes straight into barrel for fermentation. Red grapes are subjected to a cryo-maceration and fermentation in either stainless steel tanks or upright French oak barrels. Cap management is conducted either by pumpovers or manual punchdowns to extract the desired color, tannin and fruit. After fermentation, the red wines are softly pressed from their skins and racked to a combination of new and neutral barrels. The wines then age to achieve the right balance of flavors and aromas. On nose, very Penfolds, very Barossa, very Grange! Scents, now five years in making, weave their charm – this aromatic quilt's first-noted brightest colours are panforte fig and quince paste alongside cured/smoked meats (pastrami?). Its fabric is meshed with spice – cinnamon, vanillin pod, nutmeg and black pepper – tempered by teppanyaki sauces, amaretto/almond.
