This wine is from United States, California region, Napa County sub-region and Napa Valley appellation. The 2008 growing season has produced a particularly complex and complete expression of Napa Valley Merlot, combining bright, lifted red fruit elements with darker, more extracted layers. This depth is on display in the aromatics, where notes of Asian spice, red currant, plum and blueberry crisp are supported by a subtle streak of earthiness. The palate is both velvety and balanced, with flavors that echo the aromas. These flavors are held together by granular tannins and accented by oak-inspired notes of molasses and nougat. This wine is from United States, California region. Pull the cork on any bottle of Shafer Merlot and you will find a forward, stylish Merlot that takes center stage with all its appealing varietal fruit, not a Merlot that plays understudy to a Cabernet Sauvignon. Only small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are blended in to complement, but not overshadow, the Merlot itself. Taking advantage of the site-specific nature of this varietal, Shafer's Merlot draws its grapes from selected vineyards throughout the Napa Valley, gaining complexity from the vineyard diversity. It is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. .

This wine is from United States, California region, Napa County sub-region and Napa Valley appellation. Arietta Variation One Napa Valley is a blend of Merlot and Syrah, also from the Hudson Vineyards. The N Block is the only vineyard in Kongsgaard’s extensive experience with Merlot which naturally yields two and one half to three tons of fruit per acre without requiring thinning or hedging. This naturally balanced vineyard is a unique phenomenon; a gift from nature which is reflected in the harmonious quality of the wine. Syrah, from Hudson’s Hermitage selection grown in gravel unusual in the Carneros, is co-fermented with the Merlot to give the blend a wild and penetrating quality. If the H Block wine is an homage to the Right Bank of Bordeaux, Variation I is a Napa Valley original. The plum and licorice aromas of Merlot blend imperceptibly with the forest floor, wild game qualities attributable to the Syrah in a wine without antecedent anywhere in the world. The vinification, barrel ageing, and bottling are similar to the Arietta H Block wine. Variation I may be served young, especially with wilder dishes, but the powerful, if supple, tannin will support its evolution in bottle for at least 10 years MERLOT

This wine is from United States, California region, Napa County sub-region and Napa Valley appellation. The 2006 Proprietary Red Wine, a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, has a deep ruby/purple color in a dense, full-bodied style, with plenty of creme de cassis, chocolate, espresso, and sweet toasty oak. The wine is seriously well-endowed, full, and rich. This is a beauty that should evolve for at least 20+ years. The charismatic Jayson Pahlmeyer and his exuberant winemaker, Erin Green, who apprenticed for Helen Turley for many years, are turning out some fabulous wines. I terribly underestimated their 2005 reds. However, there's always time to correct these things, and I intend to do it with the following notes.. There are 7,000 cases of the prodigious 2006 Proprietary Red Wine (a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec). Most of the fruit comes from the Stagecoach Vineyard and the Waters Ranch. Sweet, smoky, meaty aromas interwoven with melted asphalt, camphor, blackberry, cassis, and charcoal scents emerge from the complex aromatics. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, displaying sweet tannin, a concentrated mouthfeel, and a long, heady finish with substantial fruit, glycerin, and extract. It should drink beautifully for 20+ years. Things just seem to get better and better at Pahlmeyer, a long-standing, brilliant, remarkably consistent source for one of Napa's finest Merlots, Chardonnays, and Pinot Noirs.. 15.2% abv. The 2007 Proprietary Red is at once restrained yet complex. Composed and intensely focused, it exhibits layer after layer of blackberry, cassis, anise, sweet cocoa, black cherry, blackberry preserves, extract, tar and cola. On the palate it is dense and concentrated with great weight and structure. Each layer lingers on and on. This wine is exceptional now and will only open further with time. This wine is from United States, California region, Napa County sub-region and Napa Valley appellation. Vintage Notes: A wet beginning to the year and continued rainfall well into spring delayed bloom and fruit set. Cool weather throughout summer into September lead to concern about ripening the larger than normal crop. Fog lingered where warm weather would typically prevail to ripen grapes. Though later than normal, warm days arrived to start harvest in earnest.Winemaking Notes: After harvesting the grapes at an average brix of 25.3, the must was fermented in stainless tanks at 85 F. The wine was drained and pressed off the skins after 21 days. Completing malolactic fermentation in barrel, the wine was then racked and placed back in barrel to age for 16 months. Oak profile during aging was 37% new oak, of which 84% was French oak and 16% American oak. Overall barrel aging profile, old and new oak, 80% French oak and 20% American oak.Tasting Notes: Aromas of earth, dried herbs and cherry. On the palate, medium body, lush fruit flavors and balanced acidity with a long finish that has a tingle and a tang and starts the evening with a bang. MERLOT Wine CALIFORNIA STILL WINE

750 ML Bottle of Marilyn Monroe 2002 Napa Valley Merlot. 2002 Marilyn Merlot Release date: June 1, 2004 The 2002 Marilyn Merlot grapes were harvested by our longtime growers from vineyards in the heart of the Napa Valley. This portrait of Marilyn wearing an easter hat was in a group of photos discovered in an abandoned brownstone in New York in the 1970's. The photographer is believed to be Carl Perutz. About The Wine "The 2002 vintage Marilyn Merlot is a blend of 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. A significant addition of Cabernet adds greater complexity to the aromas and flavors of the predominately Merlot based wine. Our annual addition of 25% new oak barrels results in aromas of toasted vanilla beans that nicely enhance the plush flavors of the black fruits". John McKay, winemaker $150.00 /bottle - 750 ml. Convinced of the distinctive potential of the Merlot cultivated in the Pliocene clay of Cortona, we began bottling "In Violas" in 2006.

This wine is from Israel, Judean Hills region. The 2004 Cabernet-Merlot-Shiraz is Cabernet Sauvignon dominated (56%), with the Merlot (33%) and Shiraz (11%) filling out the rest of the blend. It feels full in the mouth on first attack, but actually has an elegant mid-plate. There is a tannic grip on the finish, and the initial fruit forward presentation is deceptive, as the structure is good. It opens quickly, and the fruit is sweet and flavorful. There is a touch of herbs in the background. A tasty presentation that packs a punch, it is a short list contender for the finest value in this report. Drink now-2013. This wine is from United States, California region, Napa County sub-region and Napa Valley appellation. Arietta H Block Hudson Vineyards Napa Valley is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The Cabernet Franc is solely from the 2.3 acre Hudson Vineyards H Block, a shy-bearing, volcanic, southwest facing slope, which naturally yields just three tons per acre. The Merlot is grown in the Hudson Vineyards N Block, about 100 yards away. Typically, the two fields are picked simultaneously and co-fermented, assuring a marriage of the varieties. The Cabernet Franc provides the cassis, blueberry, brown sugar character, while the Merlot brings dark chocolate to the aroma and a chewy richness to the finish. Harvested near the extreme of ripeness, the wine is fermented with its indigenous yeast, macerated with the skins for six weeks, and then aged for two years in all new French oak barrels. Naturally clarified by traditional Bordeaux racking, the blend is bottled without fining or filtration. The intense concentration masks the substantial tannin, allowing the wine to be served young and to age in bottle for 10 or more years. BORDEAUX BLEND Wine California Still Wine

The jewel of Louis Roederer House is Cristal, created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II. This is champagne at its finest, as inspired today as it has always been, the embodiment of elegance and purity. Cristal is made according to the strictest criteria, based on a drastic process of selection applying to the vintage, the cru, the village, the grapes, and, finally, the wines. Only Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from the House's ten most celebrated crus are used in the production of this legendary cuvee.. The 2004 Brut Cristal has put on quite a bit of weight since I first tasted it earlier this year. It is a powerful, structured Cristal layered with considerable fruit. Chardonnay seems to play the leading role in 2004, at least today. Cristal is often accessible young, but that is far from the case here. This is a serious, painfully young Cristal that will require considerable patience. Readers who are willing to spend some time with the wine today will find a super-impressive, complete Cristal. The 2004 Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. This is Lot L033331E100008, disgorged January, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034.My visit to these historic cellars earlier in the year was an eye-opening experience. I spent several hours with Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon tasting through a wide range of 2009s vins claires. Readers may want to take a look at my feature on www.erobertparker.com for more on those wines. The visit was capped off by previews of the 2004 Cristal and the as-yet-unreleased Cristal Rose. Both were superb. Over the last six months the 2004 Cristal has come together beautifully and is shaping up to be a truly great, monumental Champagne. From top to bottom, this is an impressive set of wines. My only real criticism of Roederer is the estate's insistence on using lot numbers that resemble missile launch codes in their complexity. Surely something simpler must be possible. Sparkling Other SPARKLING WINE IMP

This wine is from United States. 'The best of the best' is a phrase often heard, but in the case of the Ameritage Reserve, it is simply a statement of fact. Winemaker Gino Razzi, after inspecting, tasting and retasting every barrel of Ameritage, selects those few that truly show unique and special qualities. Each vintage of Ameritage is a new journey for winemaker Gino Razzi, as each vintage presents different qualities to be understood and expressed in the finished wine. The 2004 Ameritage Reserve is a blend of many grapes - cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petite verdot, merlot, sangiovese. The only qualification to be part of this blend is that the grapes are the very best, and that, each in their part, contribute a quality to the completed assemblage.Rested for 2 years in 100% new French oak barriques, this wine is deep ruby in color with a core that is nearly black. Its power and complexity dance around its freshness and vitality. This is all wine combined to make one great wine. The cassis, plum, tobacco, cedar, and sweet spice notes sing together in harmony, counterbalanced by silky tannins and a soft fleshy texture. This wine is a great counterbalance to many dishes, but is perhaps best sipped after a meal for long hours of conversation and contemplation. This wine can to be enjoyed now, but it will evolve with another 15-20 years in the bottle.60% new French oak180 cases produced Wine OTHER DOMESTIC WINE

This wine is from Spain, Rioja region, Rioja Alta sub-region. Grape farmers and winemakers since 1889, the Martinez Bujanda family is a mainstay in the Rioja wine industry. Credited with popularizing a more modern, fruit-driven style of Rioja, the family produces wines that are true expressions of terroir and varietal.Quality is a core element of the Bodegas Valdemar winemaking tradition. After more than a century, the family has amassed over 1,000 acres of vineyards in some of the best growing areas in Rioja. As one of the few Bodegas that only uses estate fruit, owning their own vineyards also allows the family to farm and harvest based on their exacting standards. Today, the fifth generation of the family guides all daily operations and oversees a state-of-the-art winemaking facility in Oyon, a few hundred yards from the original Bodega. As part of their ongoing commitment to promote wines from Rioja, the family has helped revive interest in older, traditional varietals like Mazuelo, Malvasia and Graciano. Their efforts continue to be recognized by the press; the family was awarded the Wine Spectator's Critics Choice Award three different times and was also selected as one of the Top 5 Rioja Producer of the Past Quarter Century by Wine & Spirits Magazine.”A great wine is the result of an endless journey filled with fundamental processes. However, to become a great winery making high quality wines is not enough. One has to have one's own proper style of wine, and also, one's individual manner of handling things. This is what really makes a winery great, and this is what everyone here at Bodegas Valdemar tries to accomplish every single day.” Jesus Martinez Bujanda, Founder and Owner.. 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano from the Bodegas’s Santa Ana and Seminario vineyards. The wine was aged for 25 months in American and French oak barrels.. Winemaking tasting notes: ”Deep, cherry red color, with concentrated herbaceous and vanilla aromas. The blend of the 2008 Insignia, 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot, is not terribly different from the 2007. However, I suspect the production will be a lot less given the frost damage in early spring. The color is an inky/purple and the wine shows lots of cassis, blueberry, graphite and floral notes, good acidity, stunning concentration and purity, and a long finish. Another great success for Phelps, the 2007 and 2008 Insignias may be the best back-to-back vintages they have produced since 1995 and 1994. The 2008 has some tannins to resolve whereas the 2007 has already assimilated them. It appears the 2008 will require 2-3 years of bottle age, but should last for three decadesIn case you think the aging curves I have described are unrealistically long, I have the Joseph Phelps regular Cabernets from the mid-seventies as well as the Insignias in my cellar, and those wines are still drinking beautifully at 30+ years of age.
