Medium gold in appearance, with a fine, fresh bouquet of orange peel and flowers. On palate it has an excellent balance, sweetness being offset by fine acidity. There are flavors of tropical fruit and oranges with a great length. This is a perfect example of a five puttonyos wine. Tokaji AszĂș wines are wonderful on their own as an aperitif or with cigars and petits fours. Benoit Gautier, the present winemaker, tookcharge in 1981. He began the policy of domaine bottling,whereas previously the wines were sold to negociants. Thedomaine comprises 29 acres in the communes of Rochecorbonand Parcay- Meslay. The soil is the classic Tuffeau or limestonechalkfor which the central Loire is famous. The average age ofthe vines is 25 years. Gautier follows a policy of hand-picking forthe still wines, while about one quarter of the grapes for hisSparkling wines are machine harvested. Blandy's Malmsey Colheita Madeira was aged in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional "Canteiro" system, whereby the casks of wine are gradually transferred from the warm top floors of the lodge through the building until it reaches the cool ground floor. The wine had originally been set aside for a vintage release after 20 years of aging, however Blandy's winemaking team was so impressed with the quality that they prepared a special limited bottling to be enjoyed now. Blandy's Malmsey Colheita Madeira 1994 offers enticing aromas of dried fruit, toffee and dark chocolate. Notes of vanilla, oak, toasted almond and honey appear on the sweet, full bodied palate and linger through the long finish.
