Psychologist-detective Dr. Alex Delaware finds terror in the heart of paradise in this relentlessly sinister novel by America's premier writer of psychological suspense, the author of ten successive New York Times bestsellers. Three months in paradise, all expenses paid. It's an invitation Alex Delaware can't refuse. Dr. Woodrow Wilson Moreland, a revered scientist and philanthropist on the tiny Pacific island of Aruk, has invited Alex to his home to help him organize his papers for publication-- a light workload leaving Alex plenty of time to enjoy a romantic interlude with Robin Castagna.Quickly, however, secretive houseguests, frightening nocturnal visitors, and the elusive Dr. Moreland himself dim the pleasures of deep blue water and whitesand. The cases Moreland chooses to share--a patient driven to madness by a cruel, unspeakable act; a man who succumbed forty years ago to radiation poisoning after a nuclear blast; a young woman, brutally murdered, whose mutilated body was found on the beach just six months before-- seem unconnected. And yet Alex can't help wondering what the good doctor is trying to tell him...and what Moreland's real reason for inviting him to Aruk is.As Alex probes--with a little long-distance help from his friend LAPD detective Milo Sturgis--he comes to believe the answer lies hidden somewhere on Moreland's vast estate. Yet when he finally discovers the truth, the revelation will be more shocking than he could have imagined. And it will come too late to stem the tide of violence that threatens guilty and innocent alike on the lovely lost island of Aruk.Once again, with his brilliant characterizations and rapid-fire pace, Jonathan Kellerman has redefined the boundaries of suspense, probing real-life horrors and innermost fears in a novel that transfixes from first page to last. Also available on BDD Audio Cassette.

“Richard Cain was possibly the most corrupt police official in the history of Chicago.” — Federal Bureau of InvestigationHere is the dramatic story of Detective Richard Cain’s criminal career as revealed by his half-brother. Cain led a double life—one as a well known cop who led raids that landed on the front pages, and the other as a “made man” in one of Chicago’s most notorious mafia crime families. Michael Cain weaves together years of research, interviews, family anecdotes, and rare documents to create a comprehensive biography of this complex, articulate, and self-contradictory criminal genius. In a story that reads like the plot of Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Cain played both ends against the middle to become a household name in Chicagoland and a notorious figure in both the Mob and the world of Chicago law enforcement. Eventually murdered in a café by two masked men wielding shotguns, he lived and died in a world of bloodshed and violence. Cain left behind a story so outlandish that he has even been accused of being involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Filled with fascinating and until-now unknown facts, The Tangled Web tells the full story of this one-man crime wave.

Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law returns as his friend and colleague, Dr. Watson, in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows." Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room...until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at largeProfessor James Moriarty (Jared Harris)and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may give him an advantage over the renowned detective. Around the globe, headlines break the news: a scandal takes down an Indian cotton tycoon; a Chinese opium trader dies of an apparent overdose; bombings in Strasbourg and Vienna; the death of an American steel magnate... No one sees the connective thread between these seemingly random eventsno one, that is, except the great Sherlock Holmes, who has discerned a deliberate web of death and destruction. At its center sits a singularly sinister spider: Moriarty. Holmes' investigation into Moriarty's plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany and finally Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead, and moving perilously close to completing his ominous plan. If he succeeds, it will not only bring him immense wealth and power but alter the course of history. Filmmaker Guy Ritchie returned to direct "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," the follow-up to the smash hit "Sherlock Holmes." The sequel also reunited producers Joel Silver,Lionel Wigram, Susan Downey and Dan Lin. Bruce Berman and Steve Clark-Hall served as executive producers. In her first English-speaking role, Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, who gained international attention in the Swedish film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," plays a mysterious Gypsy named Sim, who becomes allied with Holmes and Watson in their quest to stop Moriarty. Jared Harris (TV's "Mad Men," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") joins the cast as the notorious Professor Moriarty. Stephen Fry ("Alice in Wonderland," "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's decidedly eccentric older brother. Returning from the first film, the cast also includes Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler; Kelly Reilly as Watson's bride, Mary Morstan; Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade; and Geraldine James as Holmes's long-suffering landlady, Mrs. Hudson.

A baby girl is stolen, and tightly woven webs of deception
... Read more
A baby girl is stolen, and tightly woven webs of deception encase her and two families for eight traumatic years. The stunningly beautiful and elegant Ashleigh Taylor gives birth to twin daughters while she's in Long Beach visiting her father figure, Charles Stuart, the founder of Bentley's Royale. Hours later, a parent's worst nightmare occurs: Cassie is kidnapped. Twisted Webs unravels the mystery of the abduction of Callie's identical twin. There is plenty going on to keep them turning pages all the way to the end. With candor and sensitivity, Darlene Quinn probes the shock and despair, the anger and frustration of parents suddenly missing a child and the long-term effects on a family wrestling with these emotions. Each of the novel's complementary storylines--Paige Toddman's reunion with her mother, Viviana De Mornay's secret, and others--ties to the redemptive theme of motherhood. Suspense electrifies the pages of each short, fast-paced chapter. Could Caroline Stuart have hired someone to kidnap the infant because of her deranged jealousy and desire for the Taylor family to suffer pain, as she does? Is the Jordon's department store executive a suspect because of personal grief? The abducted twin's father hires a deeply empathetic detective to answer those and many other questions that arise during her disappearance--at the close of which the author has crafted a knockout ending.

Because Harry McGlade is an idiot.Lead Harry through a series of comic misadventures and bad puns as he traverses the J.A. Konrath universe, popping into many familiar books and stories. Prepare to be shocked and amazed by scenes that are just plain wrong. It's over 60,000 words of Harry McGlade, which is probably way too much.About "Write Your Own Damn Story" AdventuresBanana Hammock is not a single, linear book, and should not be read sequentially, page by page. When a bar owner discovers that one of his employees is having an affair with his wife a complex web of deceit and double crosses ensues in a small Texas town. The Coen brothers' first picture is an intricately plotted film noir filled with surprises at each turn. The cast largely unkown at the time includes Dan Hedaya as the cuckolded bar owner Frances McDormand as the cheating wife John Getz as the adultering bartender and the fabulously creepy M. Emmett Walsh as the slimy sweaty private detective who should not be trusted. The film is a marvel to experience; director of photography Barry Sonnenfeld has created stunning compositions filled with open spaces and the sound--from the slightest footsteps or dripping water to a sudden shotgun blast--reverberates ominously as if it is a character unto itself. Directed by Joel Coen and cowritten by Joel and his brother Ethan BLOOD SIMPLE is an eerie testament to the limitless possibilities of low-budget filmmaking.

A central assumption of text-based discussions is that comprehension and learning can occur through dialogue with others. The text-based discussion approach challenges students to extract information from text, consider background knowledge, and engage in academic discourse about ideas and concepts, and it demands that students read, write, and think rhetorically in order to interrogate the text itself: Where did this come from? What influenced its creation? How does the author s viewpoint shape this text? What other perspectives need to be explored? What might be missing? By posing and exploring these kinds of questions in depth, with the text itself at the center, students become more sophisticated readers, writers, and thinkers. Teaching Students to Read Like Detectives explores the relationship between text, learner, and learning through discussion and rhetorical reading and writing in elementary, middle, and high school. Chapter 1 describes the importance of recognizing that students have something worthwhile to say and that a discussion-based classroom requires that teachers relinquish some control of the discourse. It presents descriptions of literary theory, ways readers approach the text, ways to balance and scaffold text-based instruction, and explanations of reading comprehension strategies. Chapter 2 explains principles of argumentation and rhetoric, which are common in high school English classrooms but less widely known in other grade levels and content areas, and discusses the text author s use of formal logic in argumentation and how detailed student analysis of argumentation allows deeper understanding of complex texts. Chapter 3 examines how narrative texts facilitate discussion and offers examples using a variety of fiction. It presents the literary components that readers can use to make sense of what they are reading, and describes how to encourage critical literacy through questioning and the use of instructional routines. Chapter 4 explains the purposes, structures, and features of expository texts, why they are so challenging to comprehend, and how they can be utilized through discussion and analysis to extract meaning and cultivate thinking. It also outlines organizational and instructional classroom practices for expository-text reading and discussion that help students expand their content knowledge and independence. Finally, chapter 5 explores reading as meaning making when students interact with Web 2.0 digital tools and sources beyond printed text. It examines how modern, multilayered student strengths can be supported in a school environment, defines types of new-media texts and how literacy instruction can be differentiated to accommodate learning differences, and addresses how new-media texts are comprehended and how to incorporate them in classroom instruction.
