This garden landscape shows a path leading through a mysterious garden whose leaves and flowers take the abstract shapes of the artists imagination. The chickens, painted against a background bearing overtones of the colors found in the garden, occupy the visual center of this path, where the eye is led into the heart of this magical realm. Garden Path with Chickens was done in the style of Art Nouveau, a French movement that developed in the last years of the nineteenth century. Gustav Klimts interest in Art Nouveau can be seen in the way that nature seems to engulf the entire painting. Visually there is no way out of this realm. It is as if the viewer is taken to another place not of this earth. The chickens for that matter appear as engrossed with the scenery as the viewer might be, for the garden rises all around and leads only into an even thicker center where the path disappears. The chickens, a metaphor for a bewildered man appear lost and dominated by the surrounding mass of mother nature. IT is interesting how Matisse outlines the woman in black but leaves the Anemones to blend in freely next to opposing shades of dark color. This painting derives its emotion from the orange couch burning the canvas behind the woman. The combination of orange against blue creates a popping sensation for the eye and adds a fantastic touch to the tone of this piece. Likewise, the inclusion of a purple pillow creates a sharp effect when juxtaposed against the blue and orange barriers. Even the green of the woman’s pants play nicely against the purple pillow. This is a classic depiction of a the femme-fatale concept so often explored by Klimt. The womans beauty is meant to cause the reader to ignore the her snakelike form. The eye is naturally drawn to the upper right region of the piece where the woman is crammed into the corner, her white breast exposed in the center of the piece where it commands the most attention. Klimt includes the head of a water beast in the lower right hand corner to remind the viewer of the nature of a femme-fatale. It is symbolically enlarged and garish to look at, its eye staring grotesquely ahead. There is quite a delicate balance between beautiful and ugly at war on this canvas. From the head of this woman flows a radiant mass of red hair as it spills outward and juxtaposes against a background of gold. Notice the scaly pattern all about her and the smug expression on her face. The woman is one with the snakes, wrapped up amongst their slithering bodies as if she is in a state of ecstasy.
