Based on 25 years of research that combed every historical and anthropological record of Native American ways, this unprecedented culinary dictionary documents the food uses of 1500 plants by 220 Native American tribes from early times to the present. Like anthropologist Daniel E. Moerman’s previous volume, Native American Medicinal Plants, this extensive compilation draws on the same research as his monumental Native American Ethnobotany, this time culling 32 categories of food uses from an extraordinary range of species. Hundreds of plants, both native and introduced, are described. The usage categories include beverages, breads, fruits, spices, desserts, snacks, dried foods, and condiments, as well as curdling agents, dietary aids, preservatives, and even foods specifically for emergencies. Each example of tribal use includes a brief description of how the food was prepared. In addition, multiple indexes are arranged by tribe, type of food, and common names to make it easy to pursue specific research. An essential reference for anthropologists, ethnobotanists, and food scientists, this will also make fascinating reading for anyone interested in the history of wild and cultivated local foods and the remarkable practical botanical knowledge of Native American forbears.

Hobe Labs - Pau D'Arco 500 mg. - 120 Capsules Hobe Labs Pau D'Arco 500 mg. This herb comes form the inner bark of a tree of the botanical family Bignoniacea, (genus: tacoma-species: conspicua) and is also knwn as Pau D'Arco, Lapacho Morado or Ipe Roxo. It is called Taheebo by the native Indians, the Callawaya, the traditional tribe of Incan medicine men and has been used for centuries by them for a variety of ailments. Therapeutic Uses And Benefits of Pau d'Arco Pau d'arco contains alkaloids, quercetin, napthaquinones, anthraquinones, and flavonoids. Lapachol, one of the naphthaquinones, has been found to be effective against malaria and some types of tumor cells in studies with laboratory animals. The heartwood of tabebuia aqvellaneda contains napthaquinones and significant amounts of quercetin, which are thought to stimulate the immune system, cleanse the body and stimulate the production of red blood cells. Most Pau d'arco products are not standardized, and there is considerable variation in the active compounds found in the tree, depending on the species. A number of species of pau d'arco are sold as herbal remedies, which may in part account for the variance in their effectiveness and quality. Most of the research has been done on the wood; at this time little research has been done on the bark. Pau d'arco is considered to be analgesic, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antimicrobial, antiviral, astringent, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, and laxative. It is thought to have anticancerous properties. Pau d'arco has a long history as an important traditional herbal remedy among the ancient Incas and natives of the South American rain forests as a tonic to strengthen the body and improve overall health. Traditional folk healers of the Caribbean use the leaves and bark to treat wounds, backache, toothache, and snakebite.

For many people, Native American architecture calls to mind
... Read more
For many people, Native American architecture calls to mind the wigwam, tipi, iglu, and pueblo. Yet the richly diverse building traditions of Native Americans encompass much more, including specific structures for sleeping, working, worshipping, meditating, playing, dancing, lounging, giving birth, decision-making, cleansing, storing and preparing food, caring for animals, and honoring the dead. In effect, the architecture covers all facets of Indian life. The collaboration between an architect and an anthropologist, Native American Architecture presents the first book-length, fully illustrated exploration of North American Indian architecture to appear in over a century. Peter Nabokov and Robert Easton together examine the building traditions of the major tribes in nine regional areas of the continent from the huge plank-house villages of the Northwest Coast to the moundbuilder towns and temples of the Southeast, to the Navajo hogans and adobe pueblos of the Southwest. Going beyond a traditional survey of buildings, the book offers a broad, clear view into the Native American world, revealing a new perspective on the interaction between their buildings and culture. Looking at Native American architecture as more than buildings, villages, and camps, Nabokov and Easton also focus on their use of space, their environment, their social mores, and their religious beliefs. Each chapter concludes with an account of traditional Indian building practices undergoing a revival or in danger today. The volume also includes a wealth of historical photographs and drawings (including sixteen pages of color illustrations), architectural renderings, and specially prepared interpretive diagrams which decode the sacred cosmology of the principal house types.
