When he was born, Michelangelo Buonarroti was put into the care of a stonecutter's family. He often said it was from them that he got his love of sculpture. It certainly didn't come from his own father, a respectable magistrate who beat his son when he asked to become an artists apprentice. But Michelangelo persevered. His early sculptures caught the attention of Florence's great ruler, Lorenzo de' Medici, who invited the boy to be educated with his own sons. Soon after, Michelangelo was astonishing people with the lifelike creations he wrested from marble--from the heartbreaking Pieta he sculpted when he was only twenty-five to the majestic David that brought him acclaim as the greatest sculptor in Italy.Michelangelo had a turbulent, quarrelsome life. He was obsessed with perfection and felt that everyone--from family members to his demanding patrons--took advantage and let him down. His long and difficult association with Pope Julius II yielded his greatest masterpiece, the radiant paintings in the Sistine Chapel, and his most disastrous undertaking, the monumental tomb that caused the artist frustration and heartache for forty years. With her thoroughly researched, lively narrative and superbly detailed illustrations, Diane Stanley has captured the life of an artist who towered above the late Renaissance--and whose brilliance in architecture, painting, and sculpture amazes and moves us to this day.Children's Books 2000-NY Public Lib., Books for Youth Editor's Choice 2000 (Booklist), Lasting Connections 2000 (Book Links), Best Books 2000 (School Library Journal), Top 10 Youth Art Books 2000 (Booklist), and Notable Children's Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies 2001, National Council for SS & Child. ... Read more
Even devoted fans can’t deny that Riptide was grade-A cheese--and we're talking Velveeta, not Gruyère That said, a little TV-style cheese never hurt anyone. In the first episode, Cody (Perry King, Class of 1984) notes that he and fellow ex-Army MP Nick (Joe Penny, Jake and the Fatman) have been friends for 10 years, detectives for two weeks. Of course, an action-adventure series needs sidekicks and gimmicks. So, computer genius and fellow vet Murray "Boz" Bozinsky (Thom Bray) becomes the brains to their brawn, while toys include a houseboat ("The Riptide"), a pink helicopter ("The Screaming Mimi"), and a robot ("Roboz"). As with Miami Vice, which premiered the same year, much of the action takes place by the water, while the playful banter between the Southern California-based duo is reminiscent of Simon & Simon, one of the era's other popular buddy shows Created by Stephen J. Cannell (Hunter, 21 Jump Street), Riptide also gave the gals something to ogle--in the two-part pilot ("Riptide, AKA Pier 56"), King and Penny play an entire scene wearing nothing but tighty-whiteys. And in most episodes, shirts are sure to come off. Courtesy of the scenic location, the series boasts a bevy of bikini-clad babes, as well. Guests stars include Kelly Preston ("The Hard Case"), Dennis Franz ("Double Your Pleasure"), and Geena Davis and Lance Henriksen ("Raiders of the Lost Sub"). Marsha Warfield (Night Court) and Anne Francis (Honey West) also drop by on occasion. The former is Max, hostess at their favorite nightspot; the latter is Mama Jo, skipper of the all-female charter craft docked in the next slip. Riptide began life on NBC as a midseason replacement, paired with Cannell’s The A-Team, and was renewed for two more seasons. Entertaining adventures aside, this three-disc set is devoid of extras. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The circus is supposed to be fun, but for this clown and the animals who perform with him, it’s just a lot of hard work. So they decide to run away to form a circus of their own. They may not have a big top, but now the clown can get to tell all his wonderful stories, the dog can run free off his collar, and the dancing pony can even nap through the waltz if he’s getting sleepy. The new show turns out to be a lot of fun for both the performers and the audience. In this reissue of a remarkably illustrated 1962 picture book, this clown shows that it’s important to enjoy what you do.

This is NOT a movie. This is a DVD book. You read it on your TV, PC or personal DVD player.“When did you last hear from Nayland Smith?” asked my visitor.I paused, my hand on the syphon, reflecting for a moment.“Two months ago,” I said; “he’s a poor correspondent and rather soured, I fancy.”“What—a woman or something?”“Some affair of that sort. He’s such a reticent beggar, I really know very little about it.”I placed a whisky and soda before the Rev. J. D. Eltham, also sliding the tobacco jar nearer to his hand. The refined and sensitive face of the clergy-man offered no indication of the truculent character of the man. His scanty fair hair, already gray over the temples, was silken and soft-looking; in appearance he was indeed a typical English churchman; but in China he had been known as “the fighting missionary,” and had fully deserved the title. In fact, this peaceful-looking gentleman had directly brought about the Boxer Risings!“You know,” he said, in his clerical voice, but meanwhile stuffing tobacco into an old pipe with fierce energy, “I have often wondered, Petrie—I have never left off wondering—”“What?”“That accursed Chinaman! Since the cellar place beneath the site of the burnt-out cottage in Dulwich Village—I have wondered more than ever.”He lighted his pipe and walked to the hearth to throw the match in the grate.“You see,” he continued, peering across at me in his oddly nervous way, “one never knows, does one? If I thought that Dr. Fu-Manchu lived; if I seriously suspected that that stupendous intellect, that wonderful genius, Petrie, er—” he hesitated characteristically—”survived, I should feel it my duty—”“Well?” I said, leaning my elbows on the table and smiling slightly.“If that Satanic genius were not indeed destroyed, then the peace of the world, may be threatened anew at any moment!”He was becoming excited, shooting out his jaw in the truculent manner I knew, and snapping his fingers to emphasize his words; a man composed of the oddest complexities that ever dwelt beneath a clerical frock.“He may have got back to China, Doctor!” he cried, and his eyes had the fighting glint in them. “Could you rest in peace if you thought that he lived? Should you not fear for your life every time that a night-call took you out alone? Why, man alive, it is only two years since he was here among us, since we were searching every shadow for those awful green eyes! What became of his band of assassins—his stranglers, his dacoits, his damnable poisons and insects and what-not—the army of creatures—”He paused, taking a drink.“You—” he hesitated diffidently—”searched in Egypt with Nayland Smith, did you not?”I nodded.“Contradict me if I am wrong,” he continued; “but my impression is that you were searching for the girl—the girl—Karamaneh, I think she was called?”“Yes,” I replied shortly; “but we could find no trace—no trace.”“You—er—were interested?”“More than I knew,” I replied, “until I realized that I had—lost her.”“I never met Karamaneh, but from your account, and from others, she was quite unusually—”“She was very beautiful,” I said, and stood up, for I was anxious to terminate that phase of the conversation. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. It's said that nothing new is actually invented, just reinvented. The game CoMotion refreshes that party classic, Charades, with cool designs and updated accessories that include a deck of cards and game tokens. Designed for individual players or teams, CoMotion has spaces on its vibrantly colored game board that direct players to act out a noun, a verb, a phrase, or a combination of related words. If you land on an extended-play space, you get extra time. Depending on the roll of the dice, sometimes just one player acts out a word, while at other times, two players simultaneously are grappling with the same word. The real commotion ensues when two players act out different words at the same time. During the acting-out, no talking is allowed. However, old tricks, like tugging on your ear to indicate "sounds like," are permitted. --Lynne Sampson

When the distinguished art critic Meyer Schapiro said that Elizabeth Bishop “writes poems with a painter’s eye,” Bishop was “very flattered: I’d love to be a painter.” The fact is—though not many knew it—she painted throughout her life, as this handsome book, reproducing in full color forty of her works, demonstrates. The paintings were tracked down, identified, and collected by the poet and art writer William Benton, who arranged the first exhibit of Bishop’s artwork (twenty-seven pieces) in January 1993 at the East Martello Tower Museum as part of the Key West Literary Seminar on Bishop’s writing.Probably the best-known paintings are the three or four that decorated the dust jackets of earlier editions of her books, but most of her artwork has never been reproduced. Some, like E. Bishop’s Patented Slot-Machine, come as a total surprise.William Benton gives the provenance, dimensions, and (where possible) the date of each work. In the second half of the book, he also cites many painterly passages from Bishop’s writing. Typically, after admitting that occasionally she painted “a small gouache or watercolor,” Bishop asserted: “They are Not Art—NOT AT ALL.” William Benton concludes, “They are, though.” In paperback for the first time since its publication, this edition of Exchanging Hats is sure to generate a renewed appreciation for this multi-talented artist.

In describing herself the author once said, "I am not a serious chronicler of the very terrible contemporary scene, but just a storyteller. There is so much tragedy about us everywhere today that we surely don't want it in the storybooks to which we turn when we are ill or unhappy. We must escape somewhere." In THE GOLDEN SKYLARK, a collection of short stories, Goudge provides that escape. Included are "The Cat and the Sailing Ship", "A Crock of Gold", "The New Moon", "The Dark Lady" and many others, all with her sympathetic knowledge of human nature and her marvelous skill at portraying the English countryside and the world of childhood.

It has been said that the only warriors who do not suffer after combat are those who were killed. I cannot attest to that for all battle tested warriors but I certainly can for one---me. Some years ago a young, 13 year old eighth grade student from the Fairfield, Iowa Middle School once asked me, "Were you wounded in the war? I had been invited to speak in Mrs. Broz's class for many years to talk about my wartime experiences. I had been asked and answered many questions but this one was different. I paused, thought deeply and quickly, and replied. "Yes I was wounded, seriously wounded but not a wound that anyone could see and fix." His question gave me pause to quickly think about warriors in all the wars that have been fought, including mine, whose wounds were unseen, untreated and debilitating even though no blood was shed. I spent a sleepless night wondering if my answer had satisfied him...or me. What was there about my military service that left me so hopeless and so helpless when I returned home to civilian life? Was it me? The military itself? The combat? This is what I recalled; perhaps the answers would come as I wrote my experiences down. "I've been practicing Transcendental Meditation for 40 years. It's a great tool for reducing stress ... especially the stress our men and women of the Armed Forces are going through now." --Clint Eastwood, Academy Award-Winning Film Director "Stress causes, anxiety, depression, and violent behavior. Transcendental Meditation is a remarkable process for reducing stress-it can help people live a long and better life." --Mehemet Oz, MD, America's Doctor "In this riveting memoir, a true American hero describes how Transcendental Meditation changed his life for good. A must-read for those struggling with the aftershocks of combat, and their loved ones." --Norman Rosenthal, M.D. Author of Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Meditation "The hidden cost of war includes long-term pain and suffering for may veterans and their families. This wonderful book shows how meditation can be a practical, simple, and effective way for our returning warriors to find peace." --Professor Linda Bilmes, Harvard University, co-author of The Three Trillion Dollar War "The Resilient warrior is a riveting read. What is especially impressive is how Jerry Yellin conflates his own war and PTSD experiences, and those experiences of other veterans, with the powerful compelling evidence of the benefits of using meditation as a means to overcome this disorder. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking relief from stress, regardless of the source of the trauma." --Donald Mikkleson, Vietnam Veteran "My son, Dory, was an eight-year Army veteran who committed suicide early this year and I have suffered terribly. On a really bad day, a few weeks after Dory's death, Jerry Yellin suggested that I read The Resilient Warrior and learn to meditate. Since starting to meditate I can feel the stress leaving me, and my days and nights are getting a little better day-by-day, week-by-week. I strongly recommend Jerry's book to veterans and families of veterans, and anyone who is looking for a way of the nightmare of PTSD." --Lin Klock, Vero Beach, Florida Author Jerry Yellin Jerry was a WW 2 fighter pilot from Hillside, NJ. He flew P-51's over Japan from Iwo Jima. Married to Helene for 60 years, they have four sons and six grandchildren. Jerry is the author of the award winning historical fiction book The Blackened Canteen and his memoir Of War and Weddings. The soldier above all other people prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war." --General Douglas Macarthur

The Bronsons were the first Jews to ever live in the small town of Concordia, Tennessee-a town consisting of one main street, one bank, one drugstore, one picture show, one feed and seed, one hardware store, one beauty parlor, one barber shop, one blacksmith, and many Christian churches. That didn't stop Aaron Bronson, a Russian immigrant, from moving his young family out of New York by horse and wagon and journeying to this remote corner of the South to open a small dry goods store, Bronson's Low-Priced Store. Never mind that he was greeted with "Danged if I ever heard tell of a Jew storekeeper afore." Never mind that all the townspeople were suspicious of any strangers. Never mind that the Klan actively discouraged the presence of outsiders. Aaron Bronson bravely established a business and proved in the process that his family could make a home, and a life, anywhere. With great fondness and a fine dry wit, Stella Suberman tells the story of her family in an account that Kirkus Reviews, in a starred review, described as "a gem...Vividly told and captivating in its humanity." Now available for the first time in paperback, here is the book that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said was "forthright. . . . not a revisionist history of Jewish life in the small-town South but . . . written within the context of the 1920s, making it valuable history as well as a moving family story."

How a Bully Learns to Share ... "James Alexander's nickname was Jim, But nobody would be friends with him. No one wanted to play with Jimmy, For Jim Alexander always said, "Gimme." Thus begins the rhyming story of Jim Alexander, whose nickname was Gimme-Jimmy because he was a greedy and selfish bully. Imagine Jimmy's concern when he found that every time he said the word "Gimme," his hand grew larger! Jimmy was happy to discover that when he was polite and said, "Please" and "Thank you," his hand began to shrink. He started practicing his new "Polite Rule" and found out that it was much more fun to share. Author Sherrill S. Cannon wrote three children's books that garnered prestigious awards in 2011. In less than two years, this award-winning grandmother of nine had three books and five children's plays published. Gimme-Jimmy is her fourth book. Her earlier book The Magic Word received a Readers Favorite Gold Medal, a NABE Pinnacle Achievement Award and a Global eBook Finalist Award; Santa's Birthday Gift received a National Indie Excellence Finalist Award and a Readers Favorite Silver Medal; and Peter and the Whimper-Whineys won a Readers Favorite Bronze Medal and a USA Best Books Finalist Award. These three award-winning titles are all available as eBooks, and Peter and the Whimper-Whineys is also available as an app. A former teacher, Sherrill S. Cannon of Great Bend, Pennsylvania, is retired and travels the country with her husband in an RV, going from coast to coast to visit their children and grandchildren, sharing her wonderfully rhyming books along the way. Were going to take you kids," he pointed at each of us sitting on the couch and said our names in a sing-song voice, "Jackie...Tommy...Helen...David...and Nancy," pausing between each name as if to prove he knew them, "to see a school tomorrow, a boarding school, see how you like it." He said this in a voice that implied it was temporary, like wed have a choice about attending. With those words, the Canfield siblings began a journey that profoundly shaped their formative years. Home Kids is Nancy Canfields courageous retelling of her familys dramatic story and the inspirational story of St. Agatha Home for Children. From the immigrant orphans of the 19th century to the crack babies of the late 20th, orphanages like St. Agatha Home for Children provided physical and emotional shelter for thousands of destitute children and escorted them into the mainstream of American Society. Home Kids is the powerful and heartfelt story of St. Agatha Home as told through archival records, newspaper accounts, and compelling first-hand interviews with former residents who found nurture and hope at St. Agatha Home for Children. All profits from the sale of Home Kids will be donated to St. Agatha Home's many foster and group homes and the New York Foundling Hospital.

It has been said that a mother's love has no bounds. Have you ever wondered how far that love should go? Should a mother love so much that she allows herself to be erased? Should she give up on personal happiness for a child? Is it possible to be happy as a woman and still be a mother? These are the questions ANNIE STECK must ask as she finds herself surrounded by six feet of snow on top of Colorado's Red Mountain. She hadn't planned on ending up in this tiny cabin with Gabe, the adventurer from Canada, who had squeezed her tightly held secrets from her, nor had she planned to feel this way about him. Was she falling in love just because she was going to die in this frozen wasteland? What would her husband and daughter think? Annie vowed to share her thoughts with Gabe the next morning, but their untimely rescue took all those options from her. Finding herself back in Nevada, her life unraveling in front of her, she must find the courage to make a new pathway for herself. Unfortunately, her daughter does not understand her life-saving decision, and refuses to speak to her mother. With more doors being shut to her in Nevada, Annie decides to go back to the place where she was happiest. However, a terrible and great sadness is the price she pays for finding herself returning to the mountains of Colorado. Annie felt she had to leave Nevada and hoped that in her absence her daughter would forgive and return to her. Annie journeys back to Ouray, Colorado, back to the place where she had begun to find herself. She is alone; facing her demons, begins a journey of self-discovery and opens her heart to love and life again.

Leonard Budgell saw the Canadian North like nobody else. He put his observations into words as few others ever could. Said a seasoned editor, "Of all the books I've worked on, this is my favourite. I want all my family and friends to read it." As a "Servant of the Bay" Budgell ran Hudson's Bay Company trading posts for decades in isolated communities up the Labrador coast and across the Arctic. Living among aboriginal Canadians he witnessed episodes and heard stories that would never again be repeated - except he wrote them down. His pen memorably portrays everything from dancing northern lights and nesting practices of primal birds to astonishing human adventures. Northern ways intact for centuries changed with rifles and motorboats, radios and electric generators, new foods and different medicines. Most often, it was Budgell who bridged the aboriginal and southern cultures, building and operating remote radio stations at places like Hebron, taking an RCMP officer into settlements where a choice had to be made between two different codes of law and behaviour. In Arctic Twilight, Leonard Budgell chronicles, in an outpouring of letters to a much younger female friend, a traditional way of life that was changing forever.
