When he was born, Michelangelo Buonarroti was put into the care of a stonecutter's family. He often said it was from them that he got his love of sculpture. It certainly didn't come from his own father, a respectable magistrate who beat his son when he asked to become an artists apprentice. But Michelangelo persevered. His early sculptures caught the attention of Florence's great ruler, Lorenzo de' Medici, who invited the boy to be educated with his own sons. Soon after, Michelangelo was astonishing people with the lifelike creations he wrested from marble--from the heartbreaking Pieta he sculpted when he was only twenty-five to the majestic David that brought him acclaim as the greatest sculptor in Italy.Michelangelo had a turbulent, quarrelsome life. He was obsessed with perfection and felt that everyone--from family members to his demanding patrons--took advantage and let him down. His long and difficult association with Pope Julius II yielded his greatest masterpiece, the radiant paintings in the Sistine Chapel, and his most disastrous undertaking, the monumental tomb that caused the artist frustration and heartache for forty years. With her thoroughly researched, lively narrative and superbly detailed illustrations, Diane Stanley has captured the life of an artist who towered above the late Renaissance--and whose brilliance in architecture, painting, and sculpture amazes and moves us to this day.Children's Books 2000-NY Public Lib., Books for Youth Editor's Choice 2000 (Booklist), Lasting Connections 2000 (Book Links), Best Books 2000 (School Library Journal), Top 10 Youth Art Books 2000 (Booklist), and Notable Children's Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies 2001, National Council for SS & Child. This is NOT a movie. This is a DVD book. You read it on your TV, PC or personal DVD player.“When did you last hear from Nayland Smith?” asked my visitor.I paused, my hand on the syphon, reflecting for a moment.“Two months ago,” I said; “he’s a poor correspondent and rather soured, I fancy.”“What—a woman or something?”“Some affair of that sort. He’s such a reticent beggar, I really know very little about it.”I placed a whisky and soda before the Rev. J. D. Eltham, also sliding the tobacco jar nearer to his hand. The refined and sensitive face of the clergy-man offered no indication of the truculent character of the man. His scanty fair hair, already gray over the temples, was silken and soft-looking; in appearance he was indeed a typical English churchman; but in China he had been known as “the fighting missionary,” and had fully deserved the title. In fact, this peaceful-looking gentleman had directly brought about the Boxer Risings!“You know,” he said, in his clerical voice, but meanwhile stuffing tobacco into an old pipe with fierce energy, “I have often wondered, Petrie—I have never left off wondering—”“What?”“That accursed Chinaman! Since the cellar place beneath the site of the burnt-out cottage in Dulwich Village—I have wondered more than ever.”He lighted his pipe and walked to the hearth to throw the match in the grate.“You see,” he continued, peering across at me in his oddly nervous way, “one never knows, does one? If I thought that Dr. Fu-Manchu lived; if I seriously suspected that that stupendous intellect, that wonderful genius, Petrie, er—” he hesitated characteristically—”survived, I should feel it my duty—”“Well?” I said, leaning my elbows on the table and smiling slightly.“If that Satanic genius were not indeed destroyed, then the peace of the world, may be threatened anew at any moment!”He was becoming excited, shooting out his jaw in the truculent manner I knew, and snapping his fingers to emphasize his words; a man composed of the oddest complexities that ever dwelt beneath a clerical frock.“He may have got back to China, Doctor!” he cried, and his eyes had the fighting glint in them. “Could you rest in peace if you thought that he lived? Should you not fear for your life every time that a night-call took you out alone? Why, man alive, it is only two years since he was here among us, since we were searching every shadow for those awful green eyes! What became of his band of assassins—his stranglers, his dacoits, his damnable poisons and insects and what-not—the army of creatures—”He paused, taking a drink.“You—” he hesitated diffidently—”searched in Egypt with Nayland Smith, did you not?”I nodded.“Contradict me if I am wrong,” he continued; “but my impression is that you were searching for the girl—the girl—Karamaneh, I think she was called?”“Yes,” I replied shortly; “but we could find no trace—no trace.”“You—er—were interested?”“More than I knew,” I replied, “until I realized that I had—lost her.”“I never met Karamaneh, but from your account, and from others, she was quite unusually—”“She was very beautiful,” I said, and stood up, for I was anxious to terminate that phase of the conversation. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. It's said that nothing new is actually invented, just reinvented. The game CoMotion refreshes that party classic, Charades, with cool designs and updated accessories that include a deck of cards and game tokens. Designed for individual players or teams, CoMotion has spaces on its vibrantly colored game board that direct players to act out a noun, a verb, a phrase, or a combination of related words. If you land on an extended-play space, you get extra time. Depending on the roll of the dice, sometimes just one player acts out a word, while at other times, two players simultaneously are grappling with the same word. The real commotion ensues when two players act out different words at the same time. During the acting-out, no talking is allowed. However, old tricks, like tugging on your ear to indicate "sounds like," are permitted. --Lynne Sampson

In describing herself the author once said, "I am not a serious chronicler of the very terrible contemporary scene, but just a storyteller. There is so much tragedy about us everywhere today that we surely don't want it in the storybooks to which we turn when we are ill or unhappy. We must escape somewhere." In THE GOLDEN SKYLARK, a collection of short stories, Goudge provides that escape. Included are "The Cat and the Sailing Ship", "A Crock of Gold", "The New Moon", "The Dark Lady" and many others, all with her sympathetic knowledge of human nature and her marvelous skill at portraying the English countryside and the world of childhood.

Leonard Budgell saw the Canadian North like nobody else. He put his observations into words as few others ever could. Said a seasoned editor, "Of all the books I've worked on, this is my favourite. I want all my family and friends to read it." As a "Servant of the Bay" Budgell ran Hudson's Bay Company trading posts for decades in isolated communities up the Labrador coast and across the Arctic. Living among aboriginal Canadians he witnessed episodes and heard stories that would never again be repeated - except he wrote them down. His pen memorably portrays everything from dancing northern lights and nesting practices of primal birds to astonishing human adventures. Northern ways intact for centuries changed with rifles and motorboats, radios and electric generators, new foods and different medicines. Most often, it was Budgell who bridged the aboriginal and southern cultures, building and operating remote radio stations at places like Hebron, taking an RCMP officer into settlements where a choice had to be made between two different codes of law and behaviour. In Arctic Twilight, Leonard Budgell chronicles, in an outpouring of letters to a much younger female friend, a traditional way of life that was changing forever.

It has been said that a mother's love has no bounds. Have you ever wondered how far that love should go? Should a mother love so much that she allows herself to be erased? Should she give up on personal happiness for a child? Is it possible to be happy as a woman and still be a mother? These are the questions ANNIE STECK must ask as she finds herself surrounded by six feet of snow on top of Colorado's Red Mountain. She hadn't planned on ending up in this tiny cabin with Gabe, the adventurer from Canada, who had squeezed her tightly held secrets from her, nor had she planned to feel this way about him. Was she falling in love just because she was going to die in this frozen wasteland? What would her husband and daughter think? Annie vowed to share her thoughts with Gabe the next morning, but their untimely rescue took all those options from her. Finding herself back in Nevada, her life unraveling in front of her, she must find the courage to make a new pathway for herself. Unfortunately, her daughter does not understand her life-saving decision, and refuses to speak to her mother. With more doors being shut to her in Nevada, Annie decides to go back to the place where she was happiest. However, a terrible and great sadness is the price she pays for finding herself returning to the mountains of Colorado. Annie felt she had to leave Nevada and hoped that in her absence her daughter would forgive and return to her. Annie journeys back to Ouray, Colorado, back to the place where she had begun to find herself. She is alone; facing her demons, begins a journey of self-discovery and opens her heart to love and life again.

Even devoted fans can’t deny that Riptide was grade-A cheese--and we're talking Velveeta, not Gruyère That said, a little TV-style cheese never hurt anyone. In the first episode, Cody (Perry King, Class of 1984) notes that he and fellow ex-Army MP Nick (Joe Penny, Jake and the Fatman) have been friends for 10 years, detectives for two weeks. Of course, an action-adventure series needs sidekicks and gimmicks. So, computer genius and fellow vet Murray "Boz" Bozinsky (Thom Bray) becomes the brains to their brawn, while toys include a houseboat ("The Riptide"), a pink helicopter ("The Screaming Mimi"), and a robot ("Roboz"). As with Miami Vice, which premiered the same year, much of the action takes place by the water, while the playful banter between the Southern California-based duo is reminiscent of Simon & Simon, one of the era's other popular buddy shows Created by Stephen J. Cannell (Hunter, 21 Jump Street), Riptide also gave the gals something to ogle--in the two-part pilot ("Riptide, AKA Pier 56"), King and Penny play an entire scene wearing nothing but tighty-whiteys. And in most episodes, shirts are sure to come off. Courtesy of the scenic location, the series boasts a bevy of bikini-clad babes, as well. Guests stars include Kelly Preston ("The Hard Case"), Dennis Franz ("Double Your Pleasure"), and Geena Davis and Lance Henriksen ("Raiders of the Lost Sub"). Marsha Warfield (Night Court) and Anne Francis (Honey West) also drop by on occasion. The former is Max, hostess at their favorite nightspot; the latter is Mama Jo, skipper of the all-female charter craft docked in the next slip. Riptide began life on NBC as a midseason replacement, paired with Cannell’s The A-Team, and was renewed for two more seasons. Entertaining adventures aside, this three-disc set is devoid of extras. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

In his "Lives of the Artists", Vasari wrote: "While we may term other works paintings, those of Raphael are living things, the flesh palpitates, the breath comes and goes, every organ lives, life pulsates everywhere." In this extensively illustrated book featuring some 300 illustrations, the author takes a critical look at the life and work of Rafaello Sanzio, or as he signed certain paintings, Raphael Urbinas, in homage to his native city of Urbino. Described as "an artist touched by grace," he is considered, along with Michelangelo and Leonardo, to be one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. Raphael (1483-1520), whose birth and death were on a Good Friday, belonged to a family of merchants; aside from his training in the studio of Perugino, little is known about his earliest years. He arrived in Florence in 1504, where he studied the masters and produced magnificent paintings of the Madonna, as well as remarkable portraits. In 1508 he went to Rome, where he died a dozen years later at the height of his powers, after creating monumental works at the Vatican. De Vecchi re-examines the scholarship surrounding each of the major periods of Raphael's short career, dispelling the myths about him that have accumulated over the centuries. He reminds us that the most "profound" element of Raphael's art was his striving to express the dialectic between earthly and heavenly love, an important concern of his contemporaries. The coverage of the text extends beyond the paintings to Raphael's significant work as an architect and designer of interiors.

Book Description: "The dragon is a mythical creature typica
... Read more
Book Description: "The dragon is a mythical creature typically depicted as a gigantic and powerful serpent or other reptile with magical or spiritual qualities. As with every mythological creature, dragons are perceived in different ways by different cultures. Dragons are sometimes said to breathe and spit fire or even acid or ice (depending on the type). They are commonly portrayed as serpentine or reptilian, hatching from eggs and possessing extremely large, typically feathered or scaly bodies; they are sometimes portrayed as having large yellow or red eyes, a feature that is the origin for the word for dragon in many cultures, and are often (but not always) portrayed with a row of dorsal spines, keeled scales, long crested ears, slitted eye pupils, leathery bat-like wings and fiery breath. Some dragons do not have wings at all, but look more like long snakes, such as Asian versions of the dragon, sometimes called the Lung. Dragons can have a variable number of legs: none, two, four, or more when it comes to early European literature. Modern depictions of dragons are very large in size,up to 50 miles in length, but some early European depictions of dragons were only the size of bears, or, in some cases, even smaller, around the size of a butterfly or even a flea.Although dragons (or dragon-like creatures) occur in many legends around the world, different cultures have varying stories about monsters that have been grouped together under the dragon label. Chinese dragons, and Eastern dragons generally, are usually seen as benevolent, whereas European dragons are usually malevolent (there are of course exceptions to these rules). Malevolent dragons also occur in Persian mythology (see Azhi Dahaka) and other cultures.Dragons are particularly popular in China, and along with the phoenix, the 5-clawed dragon was a symbol of the Chinese emperors. Dragon costumes manipulated by several people are a common sight at Chinese festivals.Dragons are often held to have major spiritual significance in various religions and cultures around the world. In many Eastern and Native American cultures dragons were, and in some cultures still are, revered as representative of the primal forces of nature, religion and the universe. Many pre-Columbian cultures were fascinated by the power of dragons. The Moche people depicted dragons frequently in their ceramics. They are associated with wisdom - often said to be wiser than humans - and longevity. They are commonly said to possess some form of magic or other supernatural power, and are often associated with wells, rain, and rivers. In some cultures, they are also said to be capable of human speech. The term dragoon, for infantry that move around by horse yet still fight as foot soldiers, is derived from their early firearm, the "dragon", a wide-bore musket that spat flame when it fired, and was thus named for the mythical creature." ... Read more
When Alija Osmanovic, a Bosnian war orphan who is the protagonist of Knife, goes in search of the identity of his murdered birth-parents, a sense of thwarted justice motivates him, and expresses itself as burning passion for revenge. This is summed up by the novel's title. The opening chapter describes the massacre of a Serbian village by Muslim Ustase on Christmas Day (January 7) of 1942. The sole survivor is a newborn male infant, spared at the last moment and given to a Muslim woman who lost her husband in the raid. The boy is named Alija, and is raised as a Muslim, and later comes to believe that his family was killed by Serbs. Twenty-one years later, Alija, now a medical student in Sarajevo, discovers that the newspapers are interested in his story. An article about him is published in a Sarajevo daily, and he begins receiving mail. Most of it is sympathetic but unhelpful, although he does receive an enigmatic letter which reads: You are certainly not what you are, nevertheless, you are what you are not. Alija seeks out Sikter Effendi, an eccentric and reclusive Muslim cleric, to help him interpret the enigma. Sikter Effendi, an irascible outsider, is, nevertheless, considered to be honest, because he has suffered at the hands of each regime: Ustase as well as Communist. He has responded by developing a fine sense of disgust for the human race, and he steeps himself in history, trying to untangle the threads of misfortune. But when Alija enters the Effendi s life, a transformation occurs. Sikter Effendi finds a spiritual heir. Through Sikter Effendi s mentorship, Alija discovers the truth: that his heritage is Serbian; that he was born not far away but in the neighboring village; and that his adoptive family was guilty of murdering his birth-family. The Bronsons were the first Jews to ever live in the small town of Concordia, Tennessee-a town consisting of one main street, one bank, one drugstore, one picture show, one feed and seed, one hardware store, one beauty parlor, one barber shop, one blacksmith, and many Christian churches. That didn't stop Aaron Bronson, a Russian immigrant, from moving his young family out of New York by horse and wagon and journeying to this remote corner of the South to open a small dry goods store, Bronson's Low-Priced Store. Never mind that he was greeted with "Danged if I ever heard tell of a Jew storekeeper afore." Never mind that all the townspeople were suspicious of any strangers. Never mind that the Klan actively discouraged the presence of outsiders. Aaron Bronson bravely established a business and proved in the process that his family could make a home, and a life, anywhere. With great fondness and a fine dry wit, Stella Suberman tells the story of her family in an account that Kirkus Reviews, in a starred review, described as "a gem...Vividly told and captivating in its humanity." Now available for the first time in paperback, here is the book that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said was "forthright. . . . not a revisionist history of Jewish life in the small-town South but . . . written within the context of the 1920s, making it valuable history as well as a moving family story."
