During the day the Mayor takes them to museums mansions and souvenir shops. When the lights in the Red Light District are switched on the Nightwatchman shows them the other side of the city. He takes the tourists to traditional bars and coffee shops. Take control of the city and your hotels will be fully booked! In this tactical boardgame the players are hotel tycoons trying to get the most tourists to in their hotels. They can rebuild the city in Amsterdam in order to make the spot where they build their hotel more attractive. The 49 tiles consist of 25 building tiles each having two sides: a night and a day building + 24 canal tiles around the city. With the (white) Mayor they are able to change a coffeeshop or a night club into a decent souvenir shop or museum. The Nightwatcher can be controlled by the players and he is able to create a complete red light district or Leidseplein scattered with numerous cafes. In the game is also a memory aspect and some limited portion of luck. Hotel Amsterdam is for 2-4 players especially interesting for 2 players from 8 years and up. A game of Hotel Amsterdam usually takes between 30 - 45 minutes which is nice when you have limited time or do not want to play a too heavy game. Includes a tactical variant for the real gamers eliminating the luck factor completely.

It's been a long year for the army of Tokio Hotel followers. But come October, the visually captivating German-born international rock idols plan to pay back their fans' dedication--with interest. Humanoid is the highly anticipated follow-up to the platinum-selling, MTV VMA-winning group's 2008 US debut, Scream. "We took our time with this album until we had the perfect feeling about the songs and the entire production," singer Bill Kaulitz said. "We're totally in love with Humanoid and hope it will make up for the fans' long wait!" The first single, "Automatic," clocks in at just over three minutes but feels like an epic, thanks to the growling, layered guitar work of Tom Kaulitz, 19, and his twin brother Bill's anthemic, heartfelt yowl. In the opening verse, he sings, "You're automatic and your heart's like an engine/I die with every beat." The contagious words and melodies are only highlighted by the honed, mechanical precision of 22-year-old bassist Georg Listing and 20-year old drummer Gustav Schafer. It's one of their best ever slices of driving desperation destined to become fans' favorite scream-along. The biggest act to come out of Germany in 20 years, Tokio Hotel has gone 10x platinum, scored four #1 singles, sold out arenas and stadiums across Europe and played to 500,000 people at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in 2008. Along the way, they picked up MTV's Best New Artist VMA and a nomination for Best Pop Video for "Ready, Set, Go!" among other accolades. Already an established international sensation, the musicians hunkered down for months with longtime producer David Jost with the goal of releasing 13 science fiction-inspired, timeless tracks to the entire world all at once. The new record secures a place for Tokio Hotel as one of rock's most enduring groups.

The second season of Angel saw the cult vampire show finall
... Read more
The second season of Angel saw the cult vampire show finally stand on its own from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, assembling all the members of the show's core cast, transferring the action to a fashionably run-down L.A. hotel, and bringing in a few Buffy characters from Angel's history to further establish the moody vampire's own mythology. Moving their Angel Investigations to posher digs, Angel (David Boreanaz), Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), and Wesley (Alexis Denisof) were soon joined by street fighter (J. August Richards)–-and by street fighter, of course we mean demon street fighter. But just as this group was solidifying, up popped Angel's old love, Darla (the fantastic Julie Benz), freshly arrived in L.A. from a hell dimension… just in time to be turned into a vampire again by her old cohort, Drusilla (Juliet Landau), and lure Angel into abandoning his newly formed team. It was the best and worst of times for Angel in its second year, for while the basis was being set for the show's stellar third and fourth seasons, dramatic tension was diluted by Angel's going solo and the necessary (but plot-debilitating) flashbacks to various points in Angel's history. However, just when it seemed everything was about to fly out the window, Angel's creative team threw its characters for a loop--literally--by transporting them to the demon dimension of Pylea, a medieval-style fantasyland populated by monsters and humans alike. It shouldn't have worked, as hokey as it was... but it did, thanks to crack storytelling, sharp dialogue, and the sheer joy the actors unleashed, especially the gifted and fiendishly funny Carpenter. The second half of the season also saw the addition of two of Angel's best characters: the horned Lorne (Andy Hallett), a green demon with a penchant for karaoke, and Fred (Amy Acker), a physicist trapped in Pylea who helped the gang engineer their escape. With these two in tow, Angel began to soar. --Mark Englehart

From an early age, I knew someday I would be a nurse...I looked for every opportunity I could find to practice my nursing skills. I even dreamed about it. After two years of candy striping, I had learned some valuable lessons about myself. Number one: I didn't like to be around sick people. Number two: vomit made me vomit... At the age of thirty, Janet Izzo decided to make her childhood dream a reality. Sure, she'd had some setbacks, but with the image of Florence Nightingale ever-present, she plowed forward, ignoring her family's laughter, braving college courses with students nearly half her age, and balancing the roles of wife, mother, and student. Then it happened: she was finally a nurse. But the journey wasn't over there; in fact, it was just beginning. In Hotel Hennepin: Nurses Can Make the Difference author Janet Izzo, RN shares the joys and struggles of being a nurse. Her dream of caring for mothers and their babies brought her to County Hospital, jokingly known as Hotel Hennepin, where she had the privilege of caring for hundreds of women. Janet tells their stories as only a nurse can, taking readers behind the scenes of this busy obstetric unit where new life begins and sometimes ends on the same day. You will laugh and you will cry as you read the dramatic real-life stories behind the doors of Hotel Hennepin, showing that nursing is more than just a jobit's a passion.

Future (or current!) business tycoons--hone your skills and get ready to play Avalon Hill's game of corporate acquisitions. The object of Acquire is to amass wealth in the form of hotel chains and valuable stock. Two to six players draw hotel tiles that correspond to specific locations on the game board. By playing these tiles strategically, players create chains and purchase stock. The action becomes feverish as players buy, trade, and sell shares and compete to create adjacent chains and corporate mergers. By the end of the game (about 75 minutes), one of two things must happen: either all chains on the board are safe from potential mergers, or one chain contains 41 or more hotels. Then bonuses are paid, all stock is sold, and the player with the most money wins. A Games magazine Hall of Fame award winner, this is an entertaining, low-complexity strategic game that is fairly quick and easy to learn and offers a chance to outwit your fellow players and build your own empire. --Tami Horiuchi

This Academy Award winner for Best Picture is a sweeping soap opera about the guests at the Grand Hotel. Several plots intertwine, but mostly it's about Stars! Stars! Stars! Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, and both Barrymore brothers head up the cast. Garbo is luminous as Grusinskaya, the neurotic and famous-but-slipping dancer and, yes, she "vonts to be alone." John Barrymore is a cat burglar with blue blood and a heart of gold, and Lionel Barrymore happily caroms off him as Mr. Kringelein, a dying man who wants to live out the time he has left with the rich. Joan Crawford is perhaps the biggest surprise of the movie: as Flaemmchen, a young career girl trying to decide between secretary and tart, she is uncharacteristically funny, vivacious, and downright bubbly. Along the way we discover that money, fame, and titles don't guarantee happiness, and being a jewel thief doesn't necessarily make you a bad person. The nicest touch is the hint that other, minor plots swirl around the edges of the film, suggesting that we've only seen a small chapter of the hotel's story. Grand Hotel is a great deal of fun and an excellent chance to see some famous faces in their prime. --Ali Davis

With this debut book of a new mystery series, Wendelin Van Draanen establishes Samantha Keyes as a crime fighter to watch. Though, actually, the book opens with Sammy watching...a crime in progress. And when the man with the wad of cash in one hand and the open purse in the other catches Sammy watching him, the chase is on--but is Sammy on the trail of the thief, or is he on hers? If the police don't believe Sammy's story about a thief with black gloves, black glasses, and a black beard, she isn't too surprised. Vice principal Caan didn't exactly believe her either when she explained that she couldn't possibly have broken Heather's nose. Well, Sammy's not putting up with this. Does she look like a liar? She knows what she saw and how hard she can hit. And somehow she's going to prove it.

In 2000, developers purchase the crumbling, century-old Gladstone Hotel to turn it from skid row flophouse into trendy, arts and music hotspot. They think it's empty...until they meet Marilyn, the chambermaid with a heart of gold; Shirley Ann, the cynical front desk clerk; and a motley crew of residents, including Maryanne, an ex-bag lady with a sweet personality who has turned her room into a toxic zone. The staff and residents - some who have been there for more than 30 years - worry they'll be squeezed out during the hotel's revitalization. The developers come up with a plan: gradual restoration, seeing staff and residents remain upstairs, while the bar serves designer drinks to hip new clientele downstairs. It doesn't work. When experimental filmmaker, Christina Zeidler inherits the mess and forms a "business model that includes social change," the hotel has the last word. City inspectors demand complete rewiring. The boiler blows up leaving the hotel without heat, ceilings leak, walls crumble and now it's up to Zeidler to decide what to do. Shot over five years in a cinema direct style, this documentary is an intimate and compelling portrait of the effects of urban renewal upon the poor, exposing a pattern of displacement repeated in cities worldwide, and revealing the unintentional roles we often play in the process of gentrification.

Little Gracie Watson was born in 1883, the only child of her parents. Her father was manager of The Pulaski House, one of Savannah's leading hotels, where the beautiful and charming little girl was a favorite of her guests. Two days before Easter, in April 1889, Gracie died of pneumonia at eh age of six. The site of the hotel is now a bank. To this day, sounds of the Little Gracie have been reported coming from the location of the original stairwell where she loved to play. In 1890, John Walz carved a life-sized (12 Inches), delicately detailed marble statue from a photograph, which for almost a century has captured the interest of all that visit her gravesite in Savannah's Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga (as shown in the background of this photograph, top right)

One wintry day a lonely stray cat wandered into the Royal Hotel. He chased mice so well that he was given the job of Hotel Cat. Tired of always spending time in the cellar Tom ventured upstairs and met the gentle Mrs. Wilkins, a longtime hotel resident who had the ability to communicate with cats. She encouraged Tom to keep an open mind about the hotel guests. One night, during the winter of New York City's Big Freeze, Tom detected three cats in one of the rooms. It turned out that due to a boiler breakdown in his house, Captain Tinker had brought Jenny Linsky and her brothers Edward and Checkers to stay at the hotel until the boiler was fixed. Other homes experienced boiler breakdowns too and soon other members of the Cat Club could be found staying in rooms at the Royal Hotel. Before long, plans were underway for the Cat Club Stardust Ball, with the help of Tom, who had proved himself helpful and considerate after all. Soon he became a "friend for ever" of Jenny and her pals.

On June 23rd, 1950, Pavese, Italy's greatest modern writer received the coveted Strega Award for his novel Among Women Only. On August 26th, in a small hotel in his home town of Turin, he took his own life. Shortly before his death, he methodically destroyed all his private papers. His diary is all that remains and for this the contemporary reader can be grateful. Contemporary speculation attributed this tragedy to either an unhappy love aff air with the American film star Constance Dawling or his growing disillusionment with the Italian Communist Party. His Diaries, however, reveal a man whose art was his only means of repressing the specter of suicide which had haunted him since childhood: an obsession that fi nally overwhelmed him. As John Taylor notes, he possessed something much more precious than a political theory: a natural sensitivity to the plight and dignity of common people, be they bums, priests, grape-pickers, gas station attendants, offi ce workers, or anonymous girls picked up on the street (though to women, the author could--as he admitted--be as misogynous as he was aff ectionate). Bitter and incisive, This Business of Living, is both moving and painful to read and stands with James Joyce's Letters and Andre Gide's Journals as one of the great literary testaments of the twentieth century. Cesare Pavese (1908-1950), was educated in Turin. In 1930 he began to contribute essays on American literature to La Cultura, of which he later became editor. In 1935 he was imprisoned for anti-fascist activities. This experience formed the basis of The Political Prisoner. Between 1936 and 1940 nine of his books were published in Italy, these included novels, short stories, poetry and essays. His books have been fi lmed and dramatized, and translated into many languages. John Taylor, a frequent contributor to the Times Literary Supplement, Context, the Yale Review, the Antioch Review, the Michigan Quarterly Review, and Chelsea, has introduced numerous European writers and poets to English readers, often for the first time. Some of his works include The Apocalypse Tapestries, Paths to Contemporary French Literature (Volumes 1 and 2) and Into the Heart of European Poetry.
