Book Description: "A fairy (also fey or fae or faerie; collectively, wee folk, good folk, people of peace, and other euphemisms) is the name given to an alleged metaphysical spirit or supernatural being. The fairy is based on the fae of medieval Western European (Old French) folklore and romance. Fairies are often identified with related beings of other mythologies (see list of beings referred to as fairies). Even in folklore that uses the term "fairy," there are many definitions of what constitutes a fairy. Sometimes the term is used to describe any magical creature, including goblins or gnomes: at other times, the term only describes a specific type of more ethereal creature.Fairies are generally described as human in appearance and as having magical powers. Their origins are less clear in the folklore, being variously the dead, or some form of angel, or a species completely independent of humans or angels. Folklorists have suggested that their actual origin lies in a conquered race living in hiding, or in religious beliefs that lost currency with the advent of Christianity. These explanations are not always mutually incompatible, and they may be traceable to multiple sources. Much of the folklore about fairies revolves about protection from their malice, by such means as cold iron (fairies don't like iron and will not go near it) or charms of rowan and herbs, or avoiding offense by shunning locations known to be theirs. In particular, folklore describes how to prevent the fairies from stealing babies and substituting changelings, and abducting older people as well. Many folktales are told of fairies, and they appear as characters in stories from medieval tales of chivalry, to Victorian fairy tales, and up to the present day in modern literature." ... Read more
In an utilitarian age, of all other times, it is a matter of grave importance that fairy tales should be respected. Charles Dickens The golden age of fairy painting lasted between 1840-1870 when fairies found expression in most of the Victorian arts - paintings, illustration, literature, theatre, ballet and music. The Victorians wanted desperately to believe in fairies because they represented a way to escape the intolerable reality of living in an unromantic, materialistic and scientific age. Fairy painting had a strong literary background. The books of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen perfected the Victorian consciousness. Shakespeare was an even more important source in particular with The Tempest and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Another influence was the Victorian obsession with the supernatural, spiritualism and the unseen world.

This kit combines Lupatelli's incredible deck with in-depth studies of The Fairy Tarot. The suits correspond to traditional Tarot, but reflect the fairy lifestyle (Acorns, Hearts, Leaves, and Bells). Some of the Major Arcana are renamed in honor of fairy history (for example, Justice becomes The Dryad and Temperance becomes The Sylph). According to myth, this deck was created by the Great Magician of the Fairies of the Enchanted Realm in order to help the undisciplined fairies learn appropriate behavior. The Great Magician wove magic into the cards; they could, when consulted properly, show seekers their problems and provide possible solutions. Kit includes 78 full-color cards and 160 page book.

An enchanting guide for anyone who's ever dreamt of being a fairy! Did you know that fairies can be short, small, fat, tall, or thin? Whatever they look like, all fairies are very clever and very magical. And have you ever wondered where fairies live? This offbeat and highly amusing guide describes the essentials for any child who decides to become a fairy: a magic wand, flying shoes, a cloak of invisibility, glitter, and a regal expression. This book offers masses of practical information. Within these pages, readers will discover everything they need to know about fairy outfits and clothes, equipment and accessories. There's even detailed information on magic and spells. Young fairies might choose the spell for good luck or the one for making general mischief. And be sure to check out the pages on wands and flying practice, both critical to a successful career as a fairy. You will also find out about fairy godmothers and the code of conduct that fairies must obey. Full of imagination and a quirky sense of humor that will hit kids' funny bone, this is a hugely entertaining book on the upside-down world of fairies. And there could be no better person to illustrate it than Lucy Loveheart, who must have been a fairy once herself. (20021004)
