Making toys was new to Hong Kong. Most toy manufacturing pioneers started with little formal education, had next-to-no capital and relied on trial and error to learn the business. Yet within 15 years, Hong Kong would become the world's second largest toy exporter, overtaking Germany in 1964, leaving only Japan to beat...it was nothing short of a miracle. In this trailblazing industry biography, veteran toymakers and their international partners share their triumphs and setbacks, shedding light for the first time on Hong Kong's untold toy story.

The Bronsons were the first Jews to ever live in the small town of Concordia, Tennessee-a town consisting of one main street, one bank, one drugstore, one picture show, one feed and seed, one hardware store, one beauty parlor, one barber shop, one blacksmith, and many Christian churches. That didn't stop Aaron Bronson, a Russian immigrant, from moving his young family out of New York by horse and wagon and journeying to this remote corner of the South to open a small dry goods store, Bronson's Low-Priced Store. Never mind that he was greeted with "Danged if I ever heard tell of a Jew storekeeper afore." Never mind that all the townspeople were suspicious of any strangers. Never mind that the Klan actively discouraged the presence of outsiders. Aaron Bronson bravely established a business and proved in the process that his family could make a home, and a life, anywhere. With great fondness and a fine dry wit, Stella Suberman tells the story of her family in an account that Kirkus Reviews, in a starred review, described as "a gem...Vividly told and captivating in its humanity." Now available for the first time in paperback, here is the book that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said was "forthright. . . . not a revisionist history of Jewish life in the small-town South but . . . written within the context of the 1920s, making it valuable history as well as a moving family story."

Daniel and Geo Fuchs were, until recently, best known for their stark photographs of animals, fish and humans conserved in science museums, which address the mortality of their subjects. More recently, they've shifted from dark documentary to these glowing Technicolor images of action figures, retaining many of the same concerns and taking up questions about the power of mass media and the cult of personality. Their first crop of new subjects were Batman, Superman and the Incredible Hulk. They soon moved on to Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone and Uma Thurman. And when they got to Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden and George Bush, the borders between reality and fiction really started to wobble. Commonalities between the networked world of entertainment and "war games" became unavoidable. The iconographic strategies of a president climbing out of a fighter plane equipped with military gear are scrutinized in a George W. Bush doll in its original packaging, with military accessories. How different the somber, plastic faces of Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone, Cold War-era soldiers without much left to do at the box office. These miniature sculptures--the title toys--turn out to be the ideal subjects for the Fuchs' intensely observed portrait photography, which asks but does not answer: outside the toy box, outside the frame, what is real and what is staged? Toygiants leaves the interpretation of its pale, vacant, plastic faces to the viewer.

If Cathy Horyn of The New York Times has captured Elisabeth Djian's essence in words, Babeth, does so in pictures. Horyn wrote, "Babeth has the intimidating look of a French madam, heightened by stiletto booties, a wink of a black bra and a laugh as free as salt. I once asked Djian what her life was like in the 1980s when, as the fashion director of the influential little magazine Jill, she captured, and created, the ultra-feminine look of that era. Her answer sailed as cleanly as an arrow over my bow. 'Lovers,' she said." While her first magazine, Jill, has remained iconic, Babeth Djian has been busy setting off plenty other cult classics in the world of fashion, in her work at French and Italian Vogue, with Glamour, Mixte and most recently Numero. Some of the most renowned photographers, designers, makeup artists, hairstylists and models in the world began their careers working with Dijian. Accordingly, this album includes illustrations from major names such as Mert Alas & Marcus Pigott, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Nathaniel Goldberg, Karl Lagerfeld, Peter Lindbergh, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Guido Mocafico, Sofia Sanchez & Mauro Mongiello, Liz Collins, Solve Sundbo, Camilla Akrans, Greg Kadel, Dusan Rejlin, Ellen von Unwerth, Paolo Roversi and more.

Welsh writer Tyvian Jones (Stanley Baker) seems to have it all, Sixties style -- an international best seller, an apartment in Rome, a gorgeous fianc+ªe in Virna Lisi - but he's bitter anyway. He meets his existential match in ennui in the mod seductress Eve, played by Jeanne Moreau, who was never more cynical or iconic. Decked out in pointy pumps and heavy eyeliner, listening to Billie Holiday on scratchy LPs as she counts the lire and smokes endless packs of cigarettes in strangers' bedrooms, she is the epitome of frayed glamour. An emotional tyrant, Eve's casual maneuvering forces Baker to confront his past - and his weaknesses - as a man and an artist. With the Hakim brothers (the notorious producers of The Long Night, Purple Noon & Belle De Jour) handed Losey a fat contract and a pulp potboiler (by James Hadley Chase), Losey was sure it was his break. After years of tightly budgeted British programmers, he hoped Eva would be his ticket to the glossy world of the international cinema. But while Losey's final cut was hailed by critics as equal to his materpiece The Servant, it was barely released and remains largely unseen after more than 30 years. Losey disowned the producers' version, 15 minutes shorter than his own. Recently released in its entirelty for the first time in the U.S. by Kino International, Losey's original verison of Eva (entitled Eve), which he described as "almost an orgasm," is also included on this DVD. The only surviving print of the longer version is a Swedish/Finnish release print preserved by the British Film Institute. It is through the efforts if the BFI that Kino is able to present this version on DVD, with Swedish and Finnish subtitles and English dialogue.

Bestselling novelist Cullen “Cubby” Greenwich is a lucky man and he knows it. He makes a handsome living doing what he enjoys. His wife, Penny, a children’s book author and illustrator, is the love of his life. Together they have a brilliant six-year-old, Milo, affectionately dubbed “Spooky,” and a non-collie named Lassie, who’s all but part of the family. So Cubby knows he shouldn’t let one bad review of his otherwise triumphant new book get to him — even if it does appear in the nation’s premier newspaper and is penned by the much-feared, seldom-seen critic Shearman Waxx. Cubby knows that the best thing to do is ignore the gratuitously vicious, insulting, and inaccurate comments. Penny knows it; even little Milo knows it. If Lassie could talk, she’d tell Cubby to ignore them, too. Ignore Shearman Waxx and his poison pen is just what Cubby intends to do. Until he happens to learn where the great man is taking his lunch. Cubby just wants to get a look at the mysterious recluse whose mere opinion can make or break a career — or a life. But Shearman Waxx isn’t what Cubby expects, and neither is the escalating terror that follows what seemed to be an innocent encounter. For Waxx gives criticism; he doesn’t take it. He has ways of dealing with those who cross him that Cubby is only beginning to fathom. Soon Cubby finds himself in a desperate struggle with a relentless sociopath, facing an inexorable assault on far more than his life. Fearless, funny, utterly compelling, Relentless is Dean Koontz at his riveting best, an unforgettable tale of the fragile bonds that hold together all that we most cherish — and of those who would tear those bonds asunder.

Even devoted fans can’t deny that Riptide was grade-A chees
... Read more
Even devoted fans can’t deny that Riptide was grade-A cheese--and we're talking Velveeta, not Gruyère That said, a little TV-style cheese never hurt anyone. In the first episode, Cody (Perry King, Class of 1984) notes that he and fellow ex-Army MP Nick (Joe Penny, Jake and the Fatman) have been friends for 10 years, detectives for two weeks. Of course, an action-adventure series needs sidekicks and gimmicks. So, computer genius and fellow vet Murray "Boz" Bozinsky (Thom Bray) becomes the brains to their brawn, while toys include a houseboat ("The Riptide"), a pink helicopter ("The Screaming Mimi"), and a robot ("Roboz"). As with Miami Vice, which premiered the same year, much of the action takes place by the water, while the playful banter between the Southern California-based duo is reminiscent of Simon & Simon, one of the era's other popular buddy shows Created by Stephen J. Cannell (Hunter, 21 Jump Street), Riptide also gave the gals something to ogle--in the two-part pilot ("Riptide, AKA Pier 56"), King and Penny play an entire scene wearing nothing but tighty-whiteys. And in most episodes, shirts are sure to come off. Courtesy of the scenic location, the series boasts a bevy of bikini-clad babes, as well. Guests stars include Kelly Preston ("The Hard Case"), Dennis Franz ("Double Your Pleasure"), and Geena Davis and Lance Henriksen ("Raiders of the Lost Sub"). Marsha Warfield (Night Court) and Anne Francis (Honey West) also drop by on occasion. The former is Max, hostess at their favorite nightspot; the latter is Mama Jo, skipper of the all-female charter craft docked in the next slip. Riptide began life on NBC as a midseason replacement, paired with Cannell’s The A-Team, and was renewed for two more seasons. Entertaining adventures aside, this three-disc set is devoid of extras. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Juana Molina set aside the budding musical career she'd pursued since childhood to become one of TV's most acclaimed comedians in her native Argentina. Her original muse may have been denied for seven years, but never forgotten; indeed, Molina has managed something of an unexpected musical delight here. Her breathy, gentle vocals haunt unusual song structures and the album's quiet, playful production sense like some restless ghost, wandering a sonic landscape that's as electro as it is Latin. That pan-cultural, less-is-more sense is rare on any collection, let alone on a sophomore album (Rara was released in her native country in ‘96) cobbled together between club gigs while living in Los Angeles. Driven by an insistent, plaintive guitar and producer/collaborator Alejandro Franov's delicate, bubbling synth riffs, Molina's unusually structured songs often seem to float in on a breeze and escape on a daydream. She's claimed the album was recorded in moments near the edge of sleep, and that stream-of-unconscious tack variously involves rhythmic choruses of barking dogs, ticking watches, and rainforest soundscapes--most so delicately rendered they sometimes seem an auditory illusion--seasoned with impossibly plastic washes of synth and carried by Molina's sweetly somnambulistic vocals. More impressive, Molina's songwriting sense seems as inscrutably subconscious. A rare, true musical adventure from first track to last. --Jerry McCulley

Tim has gone through more this past year than most people have in a lifetime and Manchester really documents those experiences. This new album is really special. I know that I am a bit biased, but I would like to go on record to say that Tim Barry has become one of America's greatest folk songwriters. I can think of few people who craft songs so honest and true. "Manchester" features 12 songs which were recorded with Lance Koehler (who has recorded his other albums) and features many of the same players who have played on his past releases (most notably Josh Small and Caitlin Barry (who is expecting her first child). Tim has enlisted the help of Buz Blurr who describes himself as "a retired railroad man who indulged in the folk art tradition of making chalk drawings on the railcars as an announcement of presence, and diversion from boredom. Although against the rules of the railroad, it was a common enough practice by the employees and hobos, by ignoring enforcement it was de facto tacit approval, for I dispatched drawings for 32 years of my 41 years of employment without interference." Buz resides in Arkansas (which he colorfully describes as "Surrealville") and is well known for his postage stamp and train art. Ryan Patterson of Coliseum put the entire package together.

Patrick Lichfield inhabited a world of beauty, class and style that he documented with conspicuous success for more than 40 years, in the process creating some of the 20th century's most iconic images - such as the Princess of Wales in her fairytale dress bending down to comfort a bridesmaid; the Queen, at ease and unselfconscious, relaxing with her beloved dogs; Mick and Bianca Jagger laughing together after their rock-star wedding. With his uniquely sympathetic eye for faces, he photographed a range of personalities for Life, Queen and Vogue magazines from the mid-1960s onwards: stars of stage and screen, politicians, aristocracy and royalty, sportsmen and women, models and socialites, as well as ordinary men and women going about their daily lives. Although he came to be identified with photographs of the illustrious, Lichfield was also an acute observer of the world around him, and his lesser-known photojournalism as well as his portraits make up a fascinating picture of the period in which he lived and worked. Curated by Martin Harrison, Perceptions is filled with photographs from Lichfield's entire archive, over half of which have never been seen before. This superbly produced retrospective, the first representing his complete career, establishes Patrick Lichfield as one of the great British photographers of the late 20th Century.

It's been a long year for the army of Tokio Hotel followers. But come October, the visually captivating German-born international rock idols plan to pay back their fans' dedication--with interest. Humanoid is the highly anticipated follow-up to the platinum-selling, MTV VMA-winning group's 2008 US debut, Scream. "We took our time with this album until we had the perfect feeling about the songs and the entire production," singer Bill Kaulitz said. "We're totally in love with Humanoid and hope it will make up for the fans' long wait!" The first single, "Automatic," clocks in at just over three minutes but feels like an epic, thanks to the growling, layered guitar work of Tom Kaulitz, 19, and his twin brother Bill's anthemic, heartfelt yowl. In the opening verse, he sings, "You're automatic and your heart's like an engine/I die with every beat." The contagious words and melodies are only highlighted by the honed, mechanical precision of 22-year-old bassist Georg Listing and 20-year old drummer Gustav Schafer. It's one of their best ever slices of driving desperation destined to become fans' favorite scream-along. The biggest act to come out of Germany in 20 years, Tokio Hotel has gone 10x platinum, scored four #1 singles, sold out arenas and stadiums across Europe and played to 500,000 people at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in 2008. Along the way, they picked up MTV's Best New Artist VMA and a nomination for Best Pop Video for "Ready, Set, Go!" among other accolades. Already an established international sensation, the musicians hunkered down for months with longtime producer David Jost with the goal of releasing 13 science fiction-inspired, timeless tracks to the entire world all at once. The new record secures a place for Tokio Hotel as one of rock's most enduring groups.

They’ve been called “visionary” by both Newsweek and Time, hailed as “the ad world’s most talked-about agency” by USA Today, and dubbed “the next big thing” by Business 2.0. They launched the Mini car craze in America, took on Big Tobacco in the controversial Truth campaign, sexed up Virgin Airlines, and made Burger King sizzle once again. And they did it with bold publicity stunts, infectious viral marketing strategies, funny masks, folding paper, outrageous Internet hoaxes, and a weird, garter belt–wearing chicken who became a cultural sensation. And this random madness has a very sound method to it: Hoopla. In Hoopla, the secret inner workings of this freewheeling, break-the-mold idea factory are revealed for the first time. Veteran journalist Warren Berger, who has tracked and reported on the CP+B phenomenon over the past decade, fully examines and deconstructs the methods that lie behind the agency’s seeming madness, while the striking images throughout the book (captioned by the CP+B creative team) provide insights into the logic, intuition, mischief, and passion that leads to the creation of Hoopla. The result is a fascinating journey into a realm of unbridled creativity. See the madness. Read the method. Hoopla. Hoopla also includes practical, step-by-step advice on how to find and promote big ideas (even on a shoestring budget), and how to generate excitement and hype in today’s cluttered, noisy communications landscape. If you’re a marketer, a communicator of any type, or anyone who needs to get out a message and generate some buzz, Hoopla will change the way you think about the art of communication.

Money certainly changes Jenner Redwine’s life when she wins a lottery jackpot. But it also costs her plenty: Her father rips her off and disappears, her fortune-hunting boyfriend soon becomes her ex, and friends-turned-freeloaders give her the cold shoulder when she stops paying for everything. Flush with new money, Jenner can’t imagine ever finding a place in the world of the wealthy. Seven years later, though, she’s rubbing elbows with the rich, despite the fact she still feels like a party crasher. Luckily she finds an ally – and a guide to the rarefied realm of privilege – in shy, kind-hearted heiress Sydney Hazlett, who quickly becomes Jenner’s confidante and surrogate sister. When Sydney invites Jenner on a charity cruise aboard a luxury liner, Jenner reluctantly agrees. But while she’s expecting – and dreading – two weeks of masquerade balls, art auctions, and preening glitterati, what she gets is more like a Hitchcock movie than a Love Boat episode. Taken hostage by a menacing stranger, Jenner must cooperate in a mysterious cloak-and-dagger scheme – or else. With nowhere to run, and with Sydney’s life as well as her own at risk, Jenner is drawn into a game of dizzying intrigue and harrowing danger. But as her panic gives way to exhilaration, and fear of her captor turns to fascination, Jenner rediscovers feelings she hasn’t had in years – and realizes she’s found a life worth living. If she survives.

Given Belle & Sebastian's eccentric way of doing things, it's hardly surprising that their soundtrack to the Todd Solondz movie Storytelling did not work out quite as planned. Plenty of bands have written scores to imaginary movies. Belle & Sebastian, however, have composed an imaginary soundtrack to an existing movie; only six minutes of this music was actually used in the film, and much of it was completed after the film was released. The weird thing is, it all fits together rather nicely. Storytelling is a more consistent beast than the last couple of B&S albums; the discipline of writing (vaguely) to order seems to have made the band perversely less uptight. Stevie Jackson's ambling harmonica piece, "F*** This S***," is a close cousin to his beautiful work with the Bill Wells Trio--and also, explicitly, Dylan's soundtrack to Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. Amidst the lilting instrumentals and snatches of dialogue from Solondz's fine movie is a clutch of quietly impressive songs. "Black and White Unite" continues Stuart Murdoch's artful reorganization of the legacies of Love and Simon & Garfunkel, while on "I Don't Want to Play Football" he chooses to stereotype himself further as the sickly child always picked last at games. Best of all, there's "Storytelling" itself, in which Sarah Martin pursues the issues of authorial responsibility tackled by Solondz in the movie. "In directions, actions, and words, cause and effect, you need consistency," she politely chastises, targeting Solondz as much as his characters. --John Mulvey

To be published for the 90th anniversary of Bentley Motors, this full colour large-format book has details, specifications and pictures of every Bentley, from the notable rotary aero engine of World War I to the latest collectors' classic, the limited edition Brooklands. A fully-illustrated chronology of the company and its racing since 1919 is included in this latest title from the award-winning series of Eric Dymock Motor Books.W O Bentley's first car appeared at the London Motor Show in 1919 - an imposing 3 Litre sports, the prototype of a style evocative of the 1920s and the Bright Young Things. Rolls-Royce created Bentley Motors (1931) Ltd, eventually to be transformed in 1997 by VW, which kept the louche glamour, returned Bentley to racing and won Le Mans. The combination of German engineering and British tradition produced a European car with a dazzling international reputation. There were eventually around 100 distinctive Bentley models, hundreds of variations of bodywork, and special individual cars like the Blue Train Bentley or the Queen's Bentley, as well as concepts like the Azure, Java, and Hunaudieres of 1999." The Complete Bentley" is the definitive Bentley guide, and like the successful companion "File" books, the only single volume with an accurate comprehensive model-by-model guide. Destined to be a book collectors' classic, it is planned to also produce it in leather-bound Blue Label, Red Label and special order Gold Label editions, slip-cased with the Bentley winged badge.
