Experiences in Movement is a complete movement education resource for early childhood and physical education professionals who want to understand movement's role in the young child's life and education. It will aid them in making significant contributions to childhood learning and development. This is the only text in the early childhood market to detail why movement education is vital to the lives and education of young children and how to provide it. It thoroughly describes movement's role in the traditional domains of child development (physical, affective and cognitive), as well as in the areas of musical and creative development. The author presents an entire movement program, lesson planning, guidelines for music selection and usage, developmentally appropriate teaching methods and tried and true tips for creating and maintaining a positive learning environment with children on the move. The text goes as far as teaching how to weave movement and music throughout the day, as well as integration across the curriculum, in transitions and for outside learning enhancement. Appendices include "Appropriate Practice in Movement Programs for Children Ages Three-Five" from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, as well as sources for ordering instruments, recordings, equipment and props.

The Birth of Hot Rodding was selected by the American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Assoc. as its choice for the best book on auto racing for 2003. Subtitled: The Story of the Dry Lakes Era."The nearest thing to it, as I thought then, would be like landing on the moon!"--Wally Parks, describing the dry lakesIn the garages, shops, and fertile minds of 1920s car buffs in search of more power and speed, the hot rodding movement was born. A hot bed of this early quest for speed sprang up when the first Southern California hot rod builder hauled his creation over the ridge of mountains and opened up the throttle on the Mojave Desert's dry lakes. The dry lake beds of the desert provided the common denominator, the measuring stick against which all hot rod builders would judge their modified machines. These dry lakes were in secluded spots where this creative breed of car folk could come together to share ideas, learn from the masters, and compete to be the fastest for the weekend. These wide open havens for speed and freedom nestled within the mountains north of Los Angeles provided nature's perfect racing surface: perfectly flat, free of obstacles, with miles to go in any direction. Places like Muroc, El Mirage, and Harper were transformed from ancient prehistoric no-man's-land to the weekend testing grounds of speed. Author Robert Genat brings together stories of the golden age of hot rodding from the men and women who pioneered the sport in The Birth of Hot Rodding. Profiles of the most influential racers, cars, and events accompany original photography to create a definitive history of hot rod racing on the dry lakes. With a foreword by Wally Parks, NHRA founder and chairman of the NHRA Motorsports Museum, The Birth of Hot Rodding encapsulates a unique piece of racing history.

Pitter Patter and Chatter's Visual Birth Plan Board and Dec
... Read more
Pitter Patter and Chatter's Visual Birth Plan Board and Decals were created to help you quickly communicate your birth plan to your team of healthcare providers. Typewritten birth plans can easily get lost during labor. Between staff transitions and a typically long list of requests, many moms have a difficult time laboring and reminding providers of their wishes. That's where our kit comes in! You can visually and quickly express your wishes to your healthcare team. The kit comes with decals symbolizing 20 of the most common items addressed in a birth plan, plus 4 alert items (such as Rh- or GBS+), and 10 clear/red line with circle "no" decals that can overlay any of the other decals. All stickers are able to be removed if necessary, and the board holds a total of 16 stickers plus room at the bottom for mom and baby's name. On the back of the board are suggestions for use, as well as a place to remember your baby's birth measurements and any other special moments you want to capture. Also included are 4 removable adhesive stickers to hold your finished board firmly in place where you choose to display it. Finally, moms choosing to labor at home or at a birth center that find themselves being transported to a hospital setting, may find the board especially useful if they don't know their hospital care providers first hand. Simply create your plan and tuck it away in your go-bag, just in case you ever need it.

My birth date of October 23, 1931, had a significant influence in allowing me life experiences as described in this book. If I had been born the year after my parent s marriage in 1923, I would have been seventeen years old at the start of World War II and undoubtedly would have been involved in this conflict. After I enrolled in college in 1949, the Korean War started. By attending college I got a draft deferment until graduation in June, 1953. By then an armistice agreement had been signed with North Korea. I fulfilled my military service by volunteering for the draft and completed my tour of duty in the United States instead of Korea. By the time the Vietnam war reached maximum escalation, I was thirty-seven years old, married with a family. Undoubtedly there are many men who share the same coincidence of birth date as mine and thereby avoided war. Also, being the son of Swedish immigrants is a circumstance that I am sure is shared by the offspring of many immigrant children. My parents provided me with all the opportunities a child could ask for and I believe I capitalized on this upbringing. Health, luck, family and my continuing interest in economics, business, government, politics, athletics, music and travel have all influenced what I have done in my life and what I have written on these pages and what I aspire to still do in the future. The fact that I wrote down these memoirs I owe to my wife, Peggy. She encouraged me to do so because she felt that these experiences were unique and that our children, friends and others would enjoy reading about them.

When Alija Osmanovic, a Bosnian war orphan who is the protagonist of Knife, goes in search of the identity of his murdered birth-parents, a sense of thwarted justice motivates him, and expresses itself as burning passion for revenge. This is summed up by the novel's title. The opening chapter describes the massacre of a Serbian village by Muslim Ustase on Christmas Day (January 7) of 1942. The sole survivor is a newborn male infant, spared at the last moment and given to a Muslim woman who lost her husband in the raid. The boy is named Alija, and is raised as a Muslim, and later comes to believe that his family was killed by Serbs. Twenty-one years later, Alija, now a medical student in Sarajevo, discovers that the newspapers are interested in his story. An article about him is published in a Sarajevo daily, and he begins receiving mail. Most of it is sympathetic but unhelpful, although he does receive an enigmatic letter which reads: You are certainly not what you are, nevertheless, you are what you are not. Alija seeks out Sikter Effendi, an eccentric and reclusive Muslim cleric, to help him interpret the enigma. Sikter Effendi, an irascible outsider, is, nevertheless, considered to be honest, because he has suffered at the hands of each regime: Ustase as well as Communist. He has responded by developing a fine sense of disgust for the human race, and he steeps himself in history, trying to untangle the threads of misfortune. But when Alija enters the Effendi s life, a transformation occurs. Sikter Effendi finds a spiritual heir. Through Sikter Effendi s mentorship, Alija discovers the truth: that his heritage is Serbian; that he was born not far away but in the neighboring village; and that his adoptive family was guilty of murdering his birth-family. A crisis of identity ensues. Each possible course of action open to him is bad. How is he to go on?

These days, the daily flight from Moscow to New York City c
... Read more
These days, the daily flight from Moscow to New York City carries a few American families with Russian children--all with pasty complexions and brand new, ill fitting American clothing. Russian law allows foreign nationals to adopt Russian orphans. But there is a catch: only children with birth defects and incurable medical conditions can be adopted. In some cases, the problems are minor and readily treatable, but some children are diagnosed with vague ailments, developmental delays that are hard to quantify, though they do make the children available for adoption. Does the child truly have a problem, or are such developmental delays usual for a child raised in an orphanage? Perhaps the diagnosis is a well-intentioned lie, in hopes that the child will have a far better life in the US than an orphan's fate in today's Russia? Or maybe it is a callous device used by local officials to keep the lucrative adoption business going? Four-year-old Olya has lived in a Children's Home all her life. We learn that she was an 'unplanned' child, and that she was placed in the Home at birth. Born prematurely, Olya has been diagnosed with a vague developmental disability. We watch her playing with the other children and meet her favorite caregiver, whom she calls 'Grandma.' Though little Olya has no idea of the changes ahead, the adults around her are both happy and fearful. 'We've never had a child go so far away,' says one caregiver. She turns to a group of children, tears streaming down her cheeks, 'I'm crying from joy, children, I'm glad, really.' Olya's new parents Sam and Meredith arrive, excited and exhausted. Chelyabinsk is a remote place, and the two Californians stand out in their bright T-shirts and shorts. Olya is shy of these strange adults, and even a pretty new dress can't quite draw her out. The adoption goes as planned, and we learn about the process: the donation made to the orphanage seems to end up in the pockets of local officials, and Sam and Meredith are sternly told that Olya's original birth certificate will be destroyed. A new birth certificate is issued, and Sam and Meredith laugh: according to the document, they had a baby in Chelyabinsk four years ago. The day comes for Olya to leave with her new family, and Sam, all but crying himself, carries a tearful Olya out to a waiting car. Her playmates and caregivers wave good-bye from the windows of the Children's Home. A year later, we visit Olya's birthday party in California. Does she have a developmental disability? Her mom thinks not: 'Most of the time these kids are given labels just to get them out of the country.' Olya's dad agrees: 'She was just a shy, quiet child. And I thought, 'Gee, we'd love to have a quiet child.' So we got another one that loves to talk!'

Birth of a Psychedelic Culture, an extraordinary new book, shines a bright light on the emergence of the sixties culture and the experiments with mind-altering substances undertaken by Professors Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) and then-Harvard graduate student Ralph Metzner. Based on a series of con-versations between Metzner and Ram Dass and recorded by psychiatrist and author Gary Bravo, this book describes their initial experiments at Harvard, the experiments after they were dismissed from Harvard, their journeys to India and their reflections on that transformative era. Birth of a Psychedelic Culture is filled with never before published photographs. Luminaries who appear in this astonishing account include: Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg, R.D. Laing, Charles Mingus, Maynard Ferguson and William Burroughs, as well as many lesser known personalities. These include convicts, graduate students and Vedantist monks! In addition to reviewing the experiments, the conversations offer vividly-recalled descriptions of particular trips, with profound insights into the nature of hallucinogens and the role they can play in transcending social conditioning. Included in Birth of a Psychedelic Culture are personal commentaries from some of the other players integral to the scene: Peggy Hitchcock, the Mellon Foundation heiress; Dr. George Litwin, Harvard professor and author; Dr. Gunther Weil, psychologist and educator; Dr. Michael Kahn, clinical psychologist and Professor Emeritus at USC, Santa Cruz; poet Dr. Elsa von Eckartsberg; Dr. George Litwin, organizational behavior consultant; Dr. Paul Lee, professor of philosopy and religion, UC Santa Cruz; Dorothy Fadiman, award winning filmmaker; Lisa Ferguson, and many others. No understanding of the history of the sixties could ever be complete without a grasp of the work of Leary, Alpert, and Metzner, the cultural resistance to their experiments, and the way in which psychoactive drug use became a part of contemporary society.

How can a fairy'sblessing be such a curse? At her birth, Ella of Frell was the unfortunate recipient of a foolish fairy's gift--the "gift' of obedience. Ella must obey any order given to her, whether it's hopping on one foot for a day and a half, or chopping off her own head! But strong-willed Ella does not tamely accept her fate. Against a bold backdrop of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella goes on a quest to break the curse--once and for all. In this incredible debut novel comes the richly entertaining story of Ella of Frell, who at birth was given the gift of obedience by a fairy. Ella soon realizes that this gift is little better than a curse, for how can she truly be herself if at anytime anyone can order her to hop on one foot, or cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom'and she'll have to obey? Against a bold tapestry of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella's quest to break the curse once and for all and discover who she really is is as sharply funny as Catherine, Called Birdy and as richly poignant as Beauty, and has all the marks of a classic in the making. 00 Rebecca Caudill Young Reader's Book Award, 99-00 Black-Eyed Susan Award (Gr 6-9 Cat), 00 CA Young Reader Medal (Mid. This award winning documentary film about babies is being shown across the nation in movie theaters, parenting and birthing classes, and small group gatherings everywhere. What Babies Want is a heart-opening film that brings together ground-breaking information about who babies truly are, what they know, and how we can support them to be their best as they develop and grow. The film is alive with captivating stories and remarkable personal experiences of infants, children and adults. It is warmly narrated by Noah Wyle who, with his wife Tracy, shares with us their passion for the well being of children. Research is now showing us that our society is a product of how we welcome and raise our children. When babies are welcomed with love and warmth and given the immediate opportunity to bond with parents, they develop minds that are coherent and flexible, ready in turn to make compassionate and meaningful connections with others as they grow. As we learn how early relationships shape the structure and function of the brain, we are also gaining a new appreciation of the wisdom of ancient cultures that understood the importance of welcoming children before, during and after the moment of birth.

That children learn to speak so skillfully at a young age has long fascinated adults. Most children virtually master their native tongue even before learning to tie their shoelaces. The ability to acquire language has historically been regarded as a "gift"--a view given scientific foundation only in the present century by Noam Chomsky's theory of "universal grammar," which posits an innate knowledge of the principles that structure all languages. In this delightful, accessible book, psycholinguist Bénédicte de Boysson-Bardies presents a broad picture of language development, from fetal development to the toddler years, and examines a wide range of puzzling questions: How do newborns recognize elements of speech? How do they distinguish them from nonspeech sounds? How do they organize and analyze them? How do they ultimately come to understand and reproduce these sounds? Finally, how does the ability to communicate through language emerge in children? Boysson-Bardies also addresses questions of particular interest to parents, such as whether one should speak to children in a special way to facilitate language learning and whether there is cause to worry when a twenty-month-old child does not yet speak. Although the author provides a clear summary of the current state of language acquisition theory, the special appeal of the book lies in her research and "dialogue" with her many young subjects.
