We are in the realm of Siam which once upon a time was heaven on earth a vast country where elephants and rhinoceroses had been living in peace for centuries. Once the earth started to shake and Siam was reduced to three regions surrounded by gigantic mountains. Since then elephants and rhinoceroses don't have enough space to live. These two incredibly strong species shall now struggle mercilessly to rule over two territories. To win the game be the first player to push a rock out of the board. An animal can push a rock -- but beware if you want to push out an animal which faces you you have to be superior in numbers e.g. you will need 2 animals to push 1 out 3 to push 2 out etc. The simplicity of Siam's rules and the profoundness of its gameplay will please the players of all strengths and ages. Game board measures 17 cm = 6.5 inches.

One may imagine Rimbaud late in life at his Sudanese trading post, composing the sort of poems W.S. Merwin offers in Travels, winner of the 1994 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. Employing a casually somber prosody of forward-falling lines and parachuted beginnings, and unified by what Elizabeth Bishop called "Questions of Travel," these poems unwind in long sentences reflecting long ideas. If the universe can be glimpsed in a grain of sand, then to Merwin a life of travel can be evoked by a single question, as when the tropical agriculturist Gregorio Bondar, returning from the Amazon to his native Ukraine in "The Moment of Green," is asked, why he had come home to be shot which they went on telling him he seemed to have done and the answer was something he could no longer remember now that he was back where words had always known him. Swaying between tropic sensuality and spaghetti-western brutality, "The Real World of Manuel Còrdova" narrates the true story of a Spaniard kidnapped by indigenous Amazon River people. Although he ultimately flees, Còrdova is initiated into mystical knowledge in exchange for becoming his captors' go-between with the West, trading rubber to satisfy a desperate thirst for guns. These and other similar long poems illustrate Merwin's theme of renewal through danger, while shorter poems find him overcoming fears of becoming lost or regretting culpability in the many ways we poison the earth. Sonorous as Poe, restless as Bruce Chatwin, Merwin offers new ways of seeing our vulnerable relations with each other and the world. --Edward Skoog

"In Just One Restless Rider", Carlos Schwantes invites readers to climb aboard for a ride they'll never forget. Growing up in Indiana, Schwantes was enthralled by trains and especially dreamt of one day riding the Pennsylvania Railroad's all-Pullman flagship Spirit of St. Louis. Now the 'dean of travel historians', Schwantes recalls his many trips along the legendary rails of America and traces the evolution of American passenger trains from the 1950s to the present. The recollections are illustrated with a host of the author's own photos that capture old steam engines, ultramodern European terminals, and even the staff of a luxury train in action. In 1993, Schwantes was invited to travel as a lecturer aboard the cruise train American Orient Express; he subsequently rode tens of thousands of miles on more than thirty separate train cruises. His narrative includes reflections on life aboard American and European trains and embraces the view from the car windows as he ponders the meaning of passing skylines. From boyhood memories of the Pennsy - 'the mightiest thing I knew' - to adult travels, Schwantes takes in the rich history and lore of rail travel. He muses over the legend of ghostly brake-man Joe Baldwin on the Wilmington and Manchester, decapitated in an accident and said to walk the nighttime tracks swinging his lantern in search of his missing head. He discovers the confusing variety in timetables issued by the numerous British lines following the privatization of British Rail and the adventure of sharing a coach with cigarette smugglers in Eastern Europe. And he hears the recollections of old railroad men like Bill Dixon, retired president of the famed Rock Island Line. By the time Schwantes actually rode on the Spirit of St. Louis in 1970, it had been down-sized to a single coach and left him a rider even more restless than those celebrated by Arlo Guthrie in the song 'City of New Orleans'. "Just One Restless Rider" is an enjoyable trip for those with the 'disappearing railroad blues' or anyone who has ever been captivated by the rhythm of the rails.

2007 was a very busy year for Henry Rollins. He traveled to Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and Pakistan, where he was staying when Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated. While traveling, Rollins performed numerous spoken word shows and worked on films, his IFC television show, and "Harmony in My Head, " his popular weekly radio show. In short, a quintessentially Rollins-ian year: sleepless, nonstop, and highly productive. "A Preferred Blur" contains stories written in the form of journal entries from Rollins' travels throughout the year. As in his other travel-related books and journals, Rollins -- "Detail" magazine's 1994 Man of the Year -- writes not only about his own life and work, but of music, current affairs, and the world around him with humor, insight, and brutal honesty.

'Operating on a shoestring, for this was the height of the Depression, we launched at Nenana two skiffs of our own making and unconventional design, like the most foolhardy party that ever embarked on the great river. For the next 80 days, over a distance of 1,600 miles, we fared through what was then truly a wilderness looking for ancient archaeological sites and recording our adventures and misadventures, our many disappointments and fewer lucky finds, and above all, our rewarding contacts with the Native peoples and white settlers we met along the way' - Frederica de Laguna. This robust and engaging travel narrative re-creates a remarkable adventure in the summer of 1935, when Frederica de Laguna, then in her late 20s, led a party of three other scientists down the rivers of the middle and lower Yukon valley, making a geological and archaeological reconnaissance. De Laguna has based her story on her field notes, journals, and letters home. She augments this first-hand account with excerpts from the reports of earlier explorers and data published after her trip. The result is a fascinating and informative cross-cut of historical events along the Yukon River and its tributaries." Travels Among the Dena" chronicles the expedition from its outfitting in Seattle and the trip by steamer and railway to Fairbanks and Nenana, through an 80-day journey on skiffs down the Tanana and Yukon rivers to Holy Cross near the coast, with side trips on the Koyukuk, Khotol, and Innoko rivers, before a one-day return flight to Fairbanks with pioneer bush pilot Noel Wien. Maps illustrate the route taken downriver, and the author's photographs capture images of the time. The resulting volume is both a delightful addition to the literature of travel adventure in Alaska and an important contribution to the discipline of anthropology. Frederica de Laguna is professor emerita of anthropology at Bryn Mawr College. Her many publications include "Tales of the Dena: Indian Stories from the Tanana, Koyukuk, and Yukon Rivers".
