Weinberg for the time that he has given to the Information Technology world. In an astonishing career spanning fifty-plus years, Jerry is author of more than forty published nonfiction books, many of them enormously influential, and (to date) one novel. Through those years, he has built and run a successful consulting business and designed and taught courses that helped to change his students' lives."Jerry's generosity with his own time is well-known among his students and friends. In the closing chapter of this book, Bent Adsersen relates how Jerry once told him that time is the most valuable gift one person can give to another. Author, mentor, writing coach, consultant, storyteller, and friend, Jerry has freely given that most valuable gift, often and to many."The contributors to this volume have all been recipients of that gift. As readers, students, clients, colleagues, friends -- and wife, in Dani Weinberg's case -- we have shared precious time with Jerry, gaining much from the exchange."This book is a gift of time we give to Jerry: from a few of his many students, friends, colleagues, and his publisher, an offering in celebration of his seventy-fifth birthday."-- from the PrefaceABOUT JERRY WEINBERGInternationally respected for his innovative thinking on both human and technical issues, Gerald M. Weinberg is recognized as a pioneer of software testing, starting with Project Mercury in 1958. A highly influential author, lecturer, and consultant, he draws on experiences gained in all three roles, as well as from a long technical career as a software developer and researcher. Weinberg has written on topics ranging from computer systems and programming to education, problem solving, and writing.Weinberg is the author of The Psychology of Computer Programming, The Secrets of Consulting, Weinberg on Writing, and dozens of other highly influential books and articles. His blend of wit, storytelling, and jaw-dropping insight has won him fans around the world.Inducted into the Computer Hall of Fame in its inaugural year, Weinberg has enjoyed a long and industrious career, serving on the faculty of famed family therapist Virginia Satir, and consulting for Fortune 500 companies.

"The definition of an owl had always pleased him: a night bird of prey...sharp talons and soft plumage which permits noiseless flight...applied figuratively to a person of nocturnal habits. 'I am The Owl,' he would whisper to himself after he had selected his prey, 'and nighttime is my time.'" Jean Sheridan, a college dean and prominent historian, sets out to her hometown to attend the twenty-year reunion of Stonecroft Academy alumni, where she is to be honored along with six other members of her class. There is something uneasy in the air: one woman in the group about to be feted, Alison Kendall, a beautiful, high-powered Hollywood agent, drowned in her pool during an early-morning swim. Alison is the fifth woman in the class whose life has come to a sudden, mysterious end. Adding to Jean's sense of unease is a taunting, anonymous fax she received, referring to her daughter -- a child she had given up for adoption twenty years ago. At the award dinner, Jean is introduced to Sam Deegan, a detective obsessed by the unsolved murder of a young woman who may hold the key to the identity of the Stonecroft killer. Jean does not suspect that among the distinguished people she is greeting is The Owl, a murderer nearing the countdown on his mission of vengeance against the Stonecroft women who had mocked and humiliated him, with Jean as his final victim.

A run-down hotel on a bare plain: the only hiding place for a girl in the rain. Once inside, a fox offers her a chair. A suspicious rat acts like he has met her before. But she can't remember anything. Not even her own name.... At the hotel she finds more questions than answers. She hears piano music, but can't find the piano. And what about the pieces of paper flying around the plain? While she tries to mend these pieces together, the pieces in her mind start to come together as well. And then she remembers the question she really wants to be answered. DEPARTURE TIME is an amazing journey of a girl in two stories. There is the girl in the hotel with the fox and the rat. And there is the girl with a father who travels a lot and who suggests to write a story together. A story about talking animals. But she doesn't want to. She is angry with him, because he can't make her birthday in time. Again. The two stories slowly start to intertwine and come together in a surprising ending.

Editorial Reviews Amazon.com essential video If you only had one Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers film to watch, this classic musical from 1936 would be your best bet. It was the dance duo's sixth film together, and director George Stevens handled the material with as much flair behind the camera as Fred and Ginger displayed in front of it. This time out, Fred plays a gambling hoofer who's engaged to marry a young socialite (Betty Furness), but when he's late for the wedding his prospective father-in-law sends him away, demanding that he earn $25,000 before he can earn his daughter's hand in marriage. When Fred meets Ginger in a local dance studio (where he pretends to be a klutz so she can be his instructor), he's instantly smitten and the $25,000 deal becomes a moot point. Featuring six songs by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields (including a splendid rendition of "The Way You Look Tonight") and some of the most elegant dance sequences ever filmed, this lightweight fluff epitomizes the jazz-age style of 1930s musicals, virtually defining the genre with graceful joie de vivre. --Jeff Shannon

Catacombs is an action/dexterity based adventure board game. One player controls the Overseer controlling the monsters of the catacombs. The other player(s) control the four heroes who cooperatively try to defeat the monsters and eventually the Catacomb Lord. Each of the heroes have special abilities that must also be used effectively if they are to prevail. The main mechanic of Catacombs is for the players to flick wooden discs representing the monsters and the heroes. Contact with an opposing piece inflicts damage but missiles spells and other special abilities can cause other effects. When all of the monsters of a room have been cleared the heroes can move further into the catacomb. Items and equipment upgrades can be purchased from the Merchant with gold taken from fallen monsters. The Catacomb Lord is the final danger that the heroes must defeat to win the game. Conversely the Overseer wins if all of the heroes are defeated. The game is designed for quick setup and fast play.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-59) was the outstanding example of an entrepreneurial Victorian engineer, seen at his most memorable in front of the chains used to launch the Great Eastern. His father, the French-born engineer Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849), invented the tunnelling shield and with it constructed the world’s first underwater tunnel, 366m long, under the Thames between Wapping and Rotherhithe; it is still in use as part of London’s underground. The younger Brunel was appointed resident engineer of the project at the age of 19. In 1833, when he was 27, he became chief engineer to the Great Western railway, building the line from Paddington to Bristol. His design for the new Clifton suspension bridge and had been accepted in 1831. The boldest of his many endeavours were his three great ships, each the largest in the world when launched. The Great Western, a wooden paddle steamer, was the first steamship to be build specifically for the Atlantic; she made her inaugural crossing in 1838 in 15 days (the small Sirius had been by a whisker the first to steam across, reaching New York the previous day after a journey of 19 days). The iron-hulled Great Britain was launched in Bristol in 1843 and is now back there. The Great Eastern (1858) was a monster which almost literally killed Brunel. It was another half century before any ship exceeded her length of 211m or her displacement of 22,500 tons. She proved almost impossible to launch and then had an unsatisfactory career crossing the Atlantic (so much coal had to be carried that there was insufficient room for the intended 4000 passengers). She only came into her own when laying the Transatlantic telegraph cable in 1865. Brunel was spared the pain of much of this saga; he suffered a stroke on board the ship just before her maiden voyage.

Megiddo is an out-of-print variant of Pente played on a round board consisting of six rings connected by six spokes. Each player in turn places a stone on one of the intersections in an attempt to get six pieces in a row in one of several configurations. A row of six could be either along a spoke, around a ring, or most interestingly, in a spiral from innermost to outermost rings. A win could also be achieved by capturing enough pairs of opposing pieces by bracketing them on either side.
