Celebrating 100 years of Peter Pan, this fourth volume in the Centennial Studies series explores the cultural contents of Barrie's creation and the continuing impact of Peter Pan on children's literature and popular culture today, especially focusing on the fluctuations of time and narrative strategies. This collection of essays on Peter Pan is separated into four parts. The first section is comprised of essays placing Barrie's in its own time period, and tackles issues such as the relationship between Hook and Peter in terms of child hatred, the similarities between Peter and Oscar Wilde, Peter Pan's position as an exemplar of the Cult of the Boy Child is challenged, and the influence of pirate lore and fairy lore are also examined. Part two features an essay on Derrida's concept of the grapheme, and uses it to argue that Barrie is attempting to undermine racial stereotypes. The third section explores Peter Pan's timelessness and timeliness in essays that examine the binary of print literacy and orality; Peter Pan's modular structure and how it is ideally suited to video game narratives; the indeterminacy of gender that was common to Victorian audiences, but also threatening and progressive; Philip Pullman and J.K. Rowling, who publicly claim to dislike Peter Pan and the concept of never growing up, but who are nevertheless indebted to Barrie; and a Lacanian reading of Peter Pan arguing that Peter acts as "the maternal phallus" in his pre-Symbolic state. The final section looks at the various roles of the female in Peter Pan, whether against the backdrop of British colonialism or Victorian England. Students and enthusiasts of children's literature will find their understanding of Peter Pan immensely broadened after reading this volume.

Peter pan, the mischievous imp who refuses to grow up, lands in the Darling's proper middle-class home to look for his shadow. He befriends Wendy, John and Michael and teaches them to fly (with a little help from fairy dust). He and Tinker Bell whisk them off to Never-land where they encounter the Red Indians, the Little Lost Boys, pirates and the dastardly Captain Cook.Unlike the boiled-down, sugarcoated contemporary versions of Peter Pan, the original classic by Barrie is not only magical but witty, sophisticated and delightfully odd.

"HOOK AND PETER PAN" (HOW IT ALL BEGAN) Registered with UK IP Rights Office, Copyright Registration Service. Ref: 1886074449 Among the many ways in which the original theatrical production of "Peter Pan" was ahead of its time was the extent to which it started the story in the middle, as it were; stipulating, with little explanation and no apology, the fantasy world of Neverland in which Peter Pan and Captain Hook live. Creating such a 'parallel universe' may seem commonplace today but must have astonished audiences in 1904. While we can accept that Neverland and its inhabitants have just always been there and magic is part of the fabric of that fantastic land, there was an anomaly in this famous story that needed to be addressed. Peter Pan himself came to Neverland as a baby from the real world, surely not bringing with him any super-human qualities. Why, how and when does he, of all the people in Neverland, get certain magical powers? When so much has been written about Peter Pan, and so many adaptations and sequels of the stage play have been written, performed and filmed, it is strange that no real effort has been made to explain his two most famous and unusual features: why does he not grow up and how can he fly? The musical "Hook and Peter Pan" was written and staged (originally under the title of "Neverland") to provide the answer to these, and indeed many other, questions left unanswered in the classic tale. The musical production received enthusiastic reviews and played to full houses throughout its extended run. Now this prequel to the classic tale has been written as a children's story, capturing all the excitement and fun of the well-known characters in an entirely original adventure, guaranteed to capture the hearts of a whole new generation of children - and their parents, who never realised how many unanswered questions they still had from their happy childhood memories of "Peter Pan"!
