Dorothy H. Finley is an Arizona icon. As a child, she grew up in hard times on a cattle ranch in the wilderness without electricity, water, indoor plumbing or air conditioning. She lived through the troubles, a time when her father and uncles were indicted for killing a man during a real Old West shootout and feared they might have to flee to Brazil to evade the law. From the age of four, she was on horseback herding cattle. At ten, she learned to drive a ranch truck, loaded 100-pound bales of hay in the back and fed the cows. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in the middle of a cow pasture. She became a schoolteacher and principal in the Tucson United School District (TUSD), started a beer distribution company with her husband and eventually became its CEO. Today she is a major philanthropist, and has been on the boards of more than 50 nonprofit organizations such as the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, the Arizona Children's Home, the Arizona Historical Society, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Girl Scouts of America, the Greater Tucson Economic Council, the Pima Community College Foundation, the Tucson Children's Museum, the Tucson Medical Center, and the Women's Studies Advisory Board. Dorothy was the driving force in preventing the closure of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. As a board member for DM-50, she went to Washington, DC, and convinced the senators to keep D-M open, saving Tucson and the state of Arizona millions of dollars in revenue, as well as thousands of jobs. She has received outstanding awards including 1987's Entrepreneur of the Year, the 1999 Jimmy Hart Award, the 1992 National Spirit of Life Award, the 2001 Ray Davies Humanitarian Award, the Mae Carvell Award, and the 2003 Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Citizen Humanitarian Award. Two organizations named their centers after Dorothy: the Dorothy H. Finley Child Development Center at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, and the Dorothy H. Finley Space Exploratorium & Challenger Learning Center of the Southwest. Dorothy Finley has written a historical memoir of her life, Just Plain Dorothy, with the assistance of well-known writer Allen R. Kates, MFAW, author of CopShock and other books (listed on Amazon.com). Starting around 1917, the book takes the reader on a voyage through the Old West, with gunfights and western justice. The story shows Dorothy on cattle roundups, how she nearly died from an Arizona Bark Scorpion sting, and how her family used outrageous folk medicine like turpentine and a petrified bee hive to cure their illnesses. The book takes the reader through the terrible times of the Great Depression, the first and second World Wars, shows Dorothy's years at the University of Arizona, and reveals her loves and disappointments including an engagement to a pilot who was severely wounded on a bombing run over Germany. We see Dorothy when she meets her husband Harold and watch them struggle to start a beer distribution company and make it grow. This book is the story of an American legend.

An uncommon book about an uncommon man. A fictional biography of 20th Century America's leading folk artist. The author has written the first and only biography of Peter Hunt, mid-20th century America's most famous and prolific folk artist. Hunt was a colorful, larger than life character who rose from immigrant poverty in Jersey City where he began life as Freddy Schnizter, later evolving into Peter "Lord Templeton" Hunt. As he re-invented himself, he moved into the wealthiest social circles, where he reigned like a bauble on a charm bracelet until the 1950s when his fame began to fade. Using Cape Cod as his base for over 40 years, Hunt became a local fixture and national media darling before dying alone and almost forgotten in 1967. His art, however, is enjoying renewed popularity and commanding prices he could only have imagined, thanks in large measure to the spotlight the author has shone upon him.

Review Even after the streets of Gotham have been swept clean of evil-doers, the swamps still provide refuge for notorious rogue Killer Croc. With the LEGO Batboat: Hunt for Killer Croc set, kids can explore this epic struggle with not one but three vehicles: Batman's hydrofoil, his detachable runabout, and Croc's boat. Batman's pivoting hydrofoil rotors and Croc's detachable surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) add to the fun. What's more, the Batman minifig comes with batcuffs, batarangs, and even a removable cowl. The Batboat set comes with 188 pieces, Batman and Killer Croc minifigs, and a full-color, illustrated instruction booklet that diagrams model construction for the hydrofoil in 24 steps, Croc's boat in 10 steps, and the runabout in nine steps. Inside the box you'll find instructions, five decals, and five bags of bricks, trim, and character pieces. ... Read more
In his "Lives of the Artists", Vasari wrote: "While we may term other works paintings, those of Raphael are living things, the flesh palpitates, the breath comes and goes, every organ lives, life pulsates everywhere." In this extensively illustrated book featuring some 300 illustrations, the author takes a critical look at the life and work of Rafaello Sanzio, or as he signed certain paintings, Raphael Urbinas, in homage to his native city of Urbino. Described as "an artist touched by grace," he is considered, along with Michelangelo and Leonardo, to be one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. Raphael (1483-1520), whose birth and death were on a Good Friday, belonged to a family of merchants; aside from his training in the studio of Perugino, little is known about his earliest years. He arrived in Florence in 1504, where he studied the masters and produced magnificent paintings of the Madonna, as well as remarkable portraits. In 1508 he went to Rome, where he died a dozen years later at the height of his powers, after creating monumental works at the Vatican. De Vecchi re-examines the scholarship surrounding each of the major periods of Raphael's short career, dispelling the myths about him that have accumulated over the centuries. He reminds us that the most "profound" element of Raphael's art was his striving to express the dialectic between earthly and heavenly love, an important concern of his contemporaries. The coverage of the text extends beyond the paintings to Raphael's significant work as an architect and designer of interiors.

When he was born, Michelangelo Buonarroti was put into the care of a stonecutter's family. He often said it was from them that he got his love of sculpture. It certainly didn't come from his own father, a respectable magistrate who beat his son when he asked to become an artists apprentice. But Michelangelo persevered. His early sculptures caught the attention of Florence's great ruler, Lorenzo de' Medici, who invited the boy to be educated with his own sons. Soon after, Michelangelo was astonishing people with the lifelike creations he wrested from marble--from the heartbreaking Pieta he sculpted when he was only twenty-five to the majestic David that brought him acclaim as the greatest sculptor in Italy.Michelangelo had a turbulent, quarrelsome life. He was obsessed with perfection and felt that everyone--from family members to his demanding patrons--took advantage and let him down. His long and difficult association with Pope Julius II yielded his greatest masterpiece, the radiant paintings in the Sistine Chapel, and his most disastrous undertaking, the monumental tomb that caused the artist frustration and heartache for forty years. With her thoroughly researched, lively narrative and superbly detailed illustrations, Diane Stanley has captured the life of an artist who towered above the late Renaissance--and whose brilliance in architecture, painting, and sculpture amazes and moves us to this day.Children's Books 2000-NY Public Lib., Books for Youth Editor's Choice 2000 (Booklist), Lasting Connections 2000 (Book Links), Best Books 2000 (School Library Journal), Top 10 Youth Art Books 2000 (Booklist), and Notable Children's Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies 2001, National Council for SS & Child. ... Read more
An important addition to the literature on modern English poets and poetryA significant poet in her own right, Ruth Pitter has long deserved this biography, which thoughtfully assesses her place in the British poetic landscape. Popular in the United Kingdom from the early 1930s until her death in 1992, Pitter won the Hawthornden Prize for Literature in 1937 for A Trophy of Arms and was the first woman to win the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry in 1955. A working artisan from Chelsea, she lived through World War I and World War II and appeared often on BBC radio and television. Pitter had close relationships with C. S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Lord David Cecil, and other Inklings. Author Don W. King's exploration of these notable friendships brings a critical perspective to Pitter's remarkable life and work.Once she found her poetic voice, Pitter created work that is profound, amusing, and beautiful. The lyricism and accessibility of her poems reflect her personality--humorous, independent, brave, kind, stern, proud, and humble. King draws on Pitter's personal journals and letters to present this overview of her life and also offers a close, critical reading of Pitter's poetry, tracing her development as a poet.Hunting the Unicorn is the first treatment to discuss the entire body of Pitter's verse. It will appeal to scholars and general readers as it places Pitter into the overall context of twentieth-century British poetry and portrays a rather modest, hardworking woman who also "witnessed" the world through the lens of a gifted poet.

When Alija Osmanovic, a Bosnian war orphan who is the protagonist of Knife, goes in search of the identity of his murdered birth-parents, a sense of thwarted justice motivates him, and expresses itself as burning passion for revenge. This is summed up by the novel's title. The opening chapter describes the massacre of a Serbian village by Muslim Ustase on Christmas Day (January 7) of 1942. The sole survivor is a newborn male infant, spared at the last moment and given to a Muslim woman who lost her husband in the raid. The boy is named Alija, and is raised as a Muslim, and later comes to believe that his family was killed by Serbs. Twenty-one years later, Alija, now a medical student in Sarajevo, discovers that the newspapers are interested in his story. An article about him is published in a Sarajevo daily, and he begins receiving mail. Most of it is sympathetic but unhelpful, although he does receive an enigmatic letter which reads: You are certainly not what you are, nevertheless, you are what you are not. Alija seeks out Sikter Effendi, an eccentric and reclusive Muslim cleric, to help him interpret the enigma. Sikter Effendi, an irascible outsider, is, nevertheless, considered to be honest, because he has suffered at the hands of each regime: Ustase as well as Communist. He has responded by developing a fine sense of disgust for the human race, and he steeps himself in history, trying to untangle the threads of misfortune. But when Alija enters the Effendi s life, a transformation occurs. Sikter Effendi finds a spiritual heir. Through Sikter Effendi s mentorship, Alija discovers the truth: that his heritage is Serbian; that he was born not far away but in the neighboring village; and that his adoptive family was guilty of murdering his birth-family. A crisis of identity ensues. Each possible course of action open to him is bad. How is he to go on?

The Bronsons were the first Jews to ever live in the small town of Concordia, Tennessee-a town consisting of one main street, one bank, one drugstore, one picture show, one feed and seed, one hardware store, one beauty parlor, one barber shop, one blacksmith, and many Christian churches. That didn't stop Aaron Bronson, a Russian immigrant, from moving his young family out of New York by horse and wagon and journeying to this remote corner of the South to open a small dry goods store, Bronson's Low-Priced Store. Never mind that he was greeted with "Danged if I ever heard tell of a Jew storekeeper afore." Never mind that all the townspeople were suspicious of any strangers. Never mind that the Klan actively discouraged the presence of outsiders. Aaron Bronson bravely established a business and proved in the process that his family could make a home, and a life, anywhere. With great fondness and a fine dry wit, Stella Suberman tells the story of her family in an account that Kirkus Reviews, in a starred review, described as "a gem...Vividly told and captivating in its humanity." Now available for the first time in paperback, here is the book that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said was "forthright. . . . not a revisionist history of Jewish life in the small-town South but . . . written within the context of the 1920s, making it valuable history as well as a moving family story."
