Brothers and Sisters in Adoption won a 2010 gold medal from Mom's Choice Awards for family-friendly adult books in adoption, and was the 2010 winner of IBPA's Benjamin Franklin Award as the best new book in the field of psychology. When experienced parents decide to adopt an older child or a sibling group, they jump through all kinds of bureaucratic hoops background checks, interviews, group meetings, reading assignments, classes, etc. But most often the typically developing children these adults are already parenting (whether through birth or adoption) are left out of the process, informed that a new kid is coming, and simply expected to adjust to the addition of a sibling.Adding a child with a history of neglect or trauma cannot be a seamless transition. The expectations of everyone involved parents, new siblings, and, yes, the professionals facilitating the adoption must be realistic, taking into account that the new child will need special attention and services that may take away time and attention from the already resident kids, that family life is likely to be turned topsy- turvy until appropriate counseling and support are in place, that relationships will change.Therapist Arleta James is certainly not the first person to recognize this, but she is the first to do something about it. Brothers and Sisters and Adoption offers insights and examples and sturdy, practical, proven tools for helping newly configured families prepare, accept, react, and mobilize to become a new and different family meeting the practical, physical and emotional needs of all its members. These well prepared and supported families are the ones who thrive!

Being an older brother has its benefits, of that there’s little doubt. But how would you feel if your little brother grew to be bigger than you? And what if he insisted on touching all your things and following you everywhere you went? It’s enough to frustrate the most even-keeled of kids. The narrator of Big Little Brother wants nothing more than to escape his brother’s sticky fingers. Then an encounter at the old Woman in the Shoe play area teaches him that a pesky younger sibling can actually be a pal. Maybe having a brother, big or small, is a blessing after all.Storyteller Kevin Kling, described as “one of our great national treasures” by public radio personality KristaTippett, has delighted audiences through his performances, plays, and audio and printed collections for decades. Illustrator Chris Monroe brings her witty, slightly subversive artistic sense to this heartwarming tale. the result is a playful, tender look at the familiar pains and joys of being a sibling. Storyteller Kevin Kling is the author of two books and several plays, including the musical Busytown, with composer Michael Koerner, based on the classic and amusing picture books by Richard Scarry. Painter and cartoonist Chris Monroe draws the weekly comic strip Violet Days and is the author and illustrator of Monkey with a Tool Belt and Sneaky Sheep, among other books for children.

Well, bless my beautiful hide! Director Stanley Donen invests this rollicking musical with a hearty exuberance. Howard Keel, with his big-as-all-outdoors baritone, stars as a bold "mountain man" living in the Oregon woods who brings home a bride (plucky songbird soprano Jane Powell) to his six slovenly brothers. Taming the rambunctious brood, Jane proceeds to make gentlemen of them so they can woo sweethearts of their own. But old habits die hard: their flirting gives way to fighting in the film's celebrated barn-raising scene, a lively acrobatic dance number exuberantly choreographed by Michael Kidd. Big brother chimes in with his own brand of advice--an old-fashioned kidnapping! Donen manages to get away with such a politically incorrect plot by investing the boys with a innocent sweetness, most notably the youngest brother played with genial earnestness by Rusty (Russ) Tamblyn (pre-West Side Story). This modest production became a huge hit and remains one of MGM's best-loved musical comedies, an energetic, high-kicking classic. --Sean Axmaker

On their second album Long Player, the Faces truly gel ... the band all seems to be coming from the same place, turning into a ferocious rock & roll band who, on their best day, could wrestle the title of greatest rock & roll band away from the Stones. Certainly, the sheer force of the nine minute jam on Big Bill Broonzy's "I Feel So Good" proves that, but what's more remarkable is how the band are dovetailing as songwriters, complimenting and collaborating with very different styles, to the extent that it's hard to tell who wrote what; indeed, the ragged, heartbroken "Tell Everyone" sounds like a Stewart original, but it comes from the pen of Ronnie Lane. The key is that Stewart, Lane and Ron Wood (Ian MacLagan only co-write "Bad 'N' Ruin") are all coming from the same place, all celebrating a rock & roll that's ordinary in subject but not in sound. Take "Bad N Ruin," the tale of a ne'er do well returning home with his tail between his legs, after the city didn't treat him well. It has its counterpart in "Had Me A Real Good Time," where a reveler insists that he has to leave, concluding that he was glad to come but also glad to get home. These are songs that celebrate home, from family to the neighborhood, and that big heart beats strong in the ballads, too, from the aching "Sweet Lady Mary" to the extraordinary reworking of Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed," which soars in ways Macca's exceptional original never did. Then, there's there humor - the ramshackle "On the Beach," the throwaway lines from Rod on "Had Me A Real Good Time" - which give this a warm, cheerful heart that helps make Long Player a record as big, messy, and wonderful as life itself. 1. Bad 'N' Ruin 2. Tell Everyone 3. Sweet Lady Mary 4. Richmond 5. Maybe I'm Amazed 6. Had Me A Real Good Time 7. On The Beach 8. I Feel So Good 9. Jerusalem

Doing for tigers what The Bear did for Grizzlies and Kodiak

Doing for tigers what The Bear did for Grizzlies and Kodiaks, Two Brothers offers lush adventure with a message that anyone can take to heart. French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud directed both films, blessing them with his keen eye for beauty and a love for wildlife that's as impassioned as it is infectious. This time, the adorable critters are Kumal and Sangha, sibling tiger cubs in French Indochina circa 1920, separated when a treasure-hunting adventurer (Guy Pearce) inadvertently leads them to capture. He makes amends by defending their right to freedom, but before that can happen, the now-grown tigers must endure cruel treatment that younger viewers (and sensitive adults) may find somewhat traumatic. There's a purpose to their ordeal, however, and Annaud (along with a world-class tiger trainer, 30 different tigers, and minimal use of digital trickery) films this uplifting story as a child's fable, with equal measures of danger and irresistible charm. As a family-friendly plea to protect endangered tigers everywhere, Two Brothers is cute, cuddly, and easily recommended. --Jeff Shannon

A silly fantasy/adventure film about a man and wife who inherit a magical bracelet that bestows ten sons unto them. It soon becomes apparent that there are ill-intentioned others who want to use the ten brothers to their own advantage. Ten Brothers Released: 2003 This twice-told tall tale of a litter of magical progeny born from a string of enchanted pearls splits the difference between the misfit-fanboy melodrama of Bryan Singer's X-Men and the cutesy mugging of the recent Cheaper by the Dozen remake. (With its near-cyclical moments of dung wit, a third point of reference might be the fourth series of Garbage Pail Kids trading cards.) Though the frankly terrifying make-up effects that enhance the kin--donkey ears, lips the size of kielbasa, sundry other atrocities--wear out their welcome rather quickly, director Lik-Chi Lee stuffs his film with some winning slapstick mayhem, most of it executed by a pint-sized "third" (Siu Lung Sik). Still, if one hesitates to invoke the name of Singer's progressive, sexually ambiguous oddballs too quickly, the reservations could rest entirely on Ten Brothers' treatment of the lone sister among the sibs: a perpetually crying girl who's regarded as "useless" until the boys discover that her secret power lies in the medicinal quality of her tears. It's almost enough to make one buy the claims of Charlie's Angels' makers that licking steering wheels and flashing some tit signal forward progress in actioneer feminism.

Mixed reviews and creepy comparisons to Michael Jackson notwithstanding, Tim Burton's splendidly imaginative adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would almost surely meet with Roald Dahl's approval. The celebrated author of darkly offbeat children's books vehemently disapproved of 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (hence the change in title), so it's only fitting that Burton and his frequent star/collaborator, Johnny Depp, should have another go, infusing the enigmatic candyman's tale with their own unique brand of imaginative oddity. Depp's pale, androgynous Wonka led some to suspect a partial riff on that most controversial of eternal children, Michael Jackson, but Burton's film is too expansively magnificent to be so narrowly defined. While preserving Dahl's morality tale on the hazards of indulgent excess, Burton's riotous explosion of color provides a wondrous setting for the lessons learned by Charlie Bucket (played by Freddie Highmore, Depp's delightful costar in Finding Neverland), as he and other, less admirable children enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Wonka's confectionary wonderland. Elaborate visual effects make this an eye-candy overdose (including digitally multiplied Oompa-Loompas, all played by diminutive actor Deep Roy), and the film's underlying weirdness is exaggerated by Depp's admirably risky but ultimately off-putting performance. Of course, none of this stops Burton's Charlie from being the must-own family DVD of 2005's holiday season, perhaps even for those who staunchly defend Gene Wilder's portrayal of Wonka from 34 years earlier. --Jeff Shannon

My Brother, My Keeper is a Horatio Alger story about an ordinary person who started life with very little, and, ultimately, became an inspirational figure to hundreds of people within his lifetime. It's a story about the author's brother, Blase, who died at the age of sixty after a courageous six-and-a-half year battle with cancer. After losing his father at the age of twelve to a massive heart attack, Blase, the oldest of five siblings, was forced to grow up fast. He took on the responsibility of helping others at an early age and continued to give generously of himself into adulthood. His first full-time job was as a laborer for a construction company, and, through hard work and a positive attitude, he eventually became the owner of that company, one of the largest privately held construction firms in the country. Blase was an amazing person who affected an enormous number of people in a very special way. He had an amazingly strong, positive attitude and outlook on life. His refusal to think negatively is what made him so special to everyone he encountered throughout his life, be it family member, friend, new employee, or complete stranger. As you read his life story, you will likely be able to identify a "Blase" in your own life-someone who has inspired you in a special way through his or her actions or deeds. Blase's story is meant to motivate others to reach their dreams through hard work, determination, faith, and a positive attitude. Perhaps his greatest accomplishment was the way he was able to use these characteristics to fight his most difficult battle in life-his struggle against cancer. Although the disease eventually took his life, it never defeated his spirit.

Original 1983 Video release by Media Home Entertainment~~~~~~~~~Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Here's a sick little movie for you--a creepy-funny shocker that's become a semi-cult classic since its release in 1982. It's a cheesy, low-budget horror flick about a small-town geek who arrives in New York City's Times Square carrying his mutant, telepathic twin brother in a big basket (hence the movie's title, get it?). They were once Siamese twins, and now they're seeking gory revenge against the doctors who surgically separated them against their will! Talk about brotherly love! The "normal" sibling has to keep his brother well- fed, and the basket-dweller's appetite runs the gamut from hamburgers to hookers. There's plenty of lowlife "meat" to be found in the seedy motel where the brothers live. Not exactly mainstream fare, as you might already have guessed, but director Frank Henenlotter handles the gruesomeness with resourceful ingenuity. The movie even gathered enough horror-buff momentum to spawn two lesser sequels in 1990 and 1992, which is all the proof you need to add this dubious trilogy to the gross-out hall of fame. --Jeff Shannon

"'La frontera'...I heard it for the first time back in the late 1940s when Papa and Mama told me and Roberto, my older brother, that someday we would take a long trip north, cross la frontera, enter California, and leave our poverty behind." So begins this honest and powerful account of a family's journey to the fields of California -- to a life of constant moving, from strawberry fields to cotton fields, from tent cities to one-room shacks, from picking grapes to topping carrots and thinning lettuce. Seen through the eyes of a boy who longs for an education and the right to call one palce home, this is a story of survival, faith, and hope. It is a journey that will open readers' hearts and minds.

The object of the game is to be the first player to get your adventurer around the board from START to the finish line back at CAMP. Along the way, you'll encounter Mudslides that may set you back and hanging vines that may swing you ahead. You'll try to grab onto Handholds and land on Safe Rocks to keep your man high and dry. Because all along the track, Quicksand pits lie in wait to suck your adventurer down, down, down --piece by piece by piece! And you'll always keep an eye out for the sneaky Alligator that lurks in the swamp --and on the special Quicksand die-- ready to scare an unlucky player backwards on the track. The player pawns represent a mustachioed archetypical British explorer, and they're in parts. To represent your sinking into the quicksand, you remove his feet, then his waist, and so on until only the pith helmet remains! You actually start already partially mired (by an initial die roll); every turn you move forward a number of spaces given by your height, plus an optional movement die. You can never sink more than hat-deep (so you cannot be eliminated).

The Brothers Grimm told tales that in their original, unedited form were strange, sometimes rambling, and of dubious moral integrity—in other words, they’re the perfect model for our Brothers Grime, the Tappet Brothers. America’s favorite auto mechanics share reminiscences, rants, and hate mail in another time-wasting yet genuinely useful collection of highlights from their long-running radio show.So one day the guys were at a restaurant enjoying a cake someone delivered to their table. On their way out, they realized their mistake: It wasn’t their cake after all. It was Grammy’s birthday cake, bound for a party at a nearby table. They apologized later on the air.Tom and Ray lead colorful (not to mention grimy) lives, and each week they share the hilarity with millions of radio listeners. Their latest collection will delight diehard fans and anyone who cares about cars and good humor. Along with the usual dose of belly laughs, it includes Tommy’s memories of his misadventures in the US Army, stories from the guys about their beloved pal Vito, and the debut performance of the Click and Clack Barbershop Quartet Minus Two singing “Goodbye My Coney Island Baby.” That the debut was also the farewell performance is no coincidence.
