Cannes, France, Tuesday, 26 May 2009, 11:22 local Blackballed CIA operative Sterling must get on a criminal mastermind’s private jet. The real life German Barbie doll in the back of the white stretch was doing all she knew to change Sterling’s plans—again. Despite the doll’s best efforts, the image filling Sterling’s iPhone couldn’t be ignored. The girl is wearing Sterling’s dead lover’s stiletto boots; boots confirmed buried in the rubble of the North Tower on 9/11. Even worse, the girl may already know her mother’s deadly secret—a secret the CIA must keep buried as Sterling works to get another lost love—a beautiful ex-KGB assassin gone rogue—off an MI6 hit list before their time runs out. And what if Sterling opens the little gift-wrapped package the doll’s papa ordered be placed onboard the jet? Dame Jane Sterling and the whole bloody assignment could be blown—sky high! Stiletto Dolls: a novel of steamy psychological suspense delivers all, except a leading man. The ladies rule in this contemporary twist of Cold War cloak and dagger intrigue dripping with desire, deceit, diamonds, and above all else, denial.

I'd buy this book just for the cover, but the poems are even twice as wonderful. Denise Duhamel has apparently obsessed for months about the Barbie doll phenomenon: all the poems have to do with the "what if " of Barbie attempting to fit into the real world. For example, what if Barbie were codependent? What if Barbie were in therapy? What if she were a religious fanatic? Do you know why Barbie and Ken don't dress in underwear? Why Barbie joined a 12 Step Program? How can you sleep nights without delving into the mysteries of this pop culture darling with the plastic eyelashes?

It doesn’t help that her name’s Bubbles. Or that she’s a gum-snapping hairdresser with Barbie-doll curves pinched into hot pants and a tube top. Or that she’s saddled with a sleazy ex-hubby, a precocious daughter and a shoplifting mother. What can a beautician do to add new highlights to her image? For starters, trip over a corpse, and implicate a wealthy town socialite in the crime. Now, with a well-muscled photographer by her side, Bubbles is playing star sleuth. But as the investigation unravels, her shining moment grows as dark as a shopgirl’s roots. However dangerous her new career, at least the hottest graduate of Two Guys Community College is finally busting loose—and this time she’s really giving Lehigh, Pennsylvania something to talk about. Sarah Strohmeyer won the 2002 Agatha Award for best first mystery for Bubbles Unbound.

The newest book from acclaimed doll-clothing designer, Rosemarie Ionker presents designing, sewing and clothing ideas for dolls of every size, ranging from 7-inch-high favourites like Helen Kish's Riley, Heather Maciak's Molly and a vintage Ginny, to 18-inch-high Gretel from Kathe Kruse and the popular American Girl dolls. Modeled on 18 contemporary creations from a host of makers, including Heidi Plusczok, Dianna Effner and Pauline Jacobsen, the completed clothing will also fit reproduction Bleuettes and older dolls such as Sasha and the antique Daisy. The easy-to-follow instructions are accompanied by patterns from which seamstresses can design a multitude of garments, from underwear to pants, dresses, coats and jackets. Ms. Ionker leads readers through the process of creating new patterns from these basics. Beginning sewers can confidently replicate some of the simplest pieces, while the more advanced may choose to progress into designing their own unique fashions. Detailed directions for decorations and embellishments are included, as well as guidelines for selecting fabrics and general sewing tips.

Even as they see their wages go down and their buying power
... Read more
Even as they see their wages go down and their buying power decrease, many parents are still putting their kids' material desires first. These parents struggle with how to handle children's consumer wants, which continue unabated despite the economic downturn. And, indeed, parents and other adults continue to spend billions of dollars on children every year. Why do children seem to desire so much, so often, so soon, and why do parents capitulate so readily? To determine what forces lie behind the onslaught of Nintendo Wiis and Bratz dolls, Allison J. Pugh spent three years observing and interviewing children and their families. In Longing and Belonging: Parents, Children, and Consumer Culture, Pugh teases out the complex factors that contribute to how we buy, from lunchroom conversations about Game Boys to the stark inequalities facing American children. Pugh finds that children's desires stem less from striving for status or falling victim to advertising than from their yearning to join the conversation at school or in the neighborhood. Most parents respond to children's need to belong by buying the particular goods and experiences that act as passports in children's social worlds, because they sympathize with their children's fear of being different from their peers. Even under financial constraints, families prioritize children "feeling normal". Pugh masterfully illuminates the surprising similarities in the fears and hopes of parents and children from vastly different social contexts, showing that while corporate marketing and materialism play a part in the commodification of childhood, at the heart of the matter is the desire to belong.
