This is not your ordinary audio book! It's another collection of stories from Smokey Yunick's autobiography: Best Damn Garage in Town. Smokey Yunick, the world's most famous mechanic, accomplished more in one life than most people could in five. He flew 50 missions as a B-17 pilot in WWII. He was an integral part of the birth of stock car racing and ran open wheel cars during the glory days of the Indy 500. He spent years in the jungles of Ecuador and held 10 U.S. patents. Smokey was concerned for the future, so he developed more efficient and powerful engines for passenger cars and safer crash barriers for race tracks. These are the real stories of racing and everything automotive in America told by someone who was there every step of the way! Londinium, Britannia, A.D. 211. A city of slum tenements and sumptuous villas, of orgy queens, drag queens, and drama queens. A city where the currency is often sex, where children go to work at age five, and marriage is a career move. Through the bustling city we follow Zuleika, the feisty, precocious daughter of Sudanese immigrants-made-good. Married off at eleven to Felix, a rich Roman senator three times her age who is usually away on business, Zuleika drifts around his beautiful villa, bored, or sneaks out to see her old friends. Then one night at the theater, several years later, she is spotted by the visiting Roman emperor, Septimus Severus, and they begin a passionate affair. This is the unforgettable story of Zuleika, the Emperor's Babe, told through a dazzling fusion of poetry and fiction, history and myth. Funny, playful, and erotic, Bernardine Evaristo's novel in verse is a triumph of imaginative writing and a gorgeously readable and vivid narrative. "Readable, sexy, delicious . . . I loved this book!" (Helen Dunmore, author of A Spell of Winter) "Evaristo's triumph is to transmute politics and history into a glittering fiction whose words leap off the page into life. Anarchic, she calls it, but brilliant would do just as well." (The Times, London)

In his "Lives of the Artists", Vasari wrote: "While we may term other works paintings, those of Raphael are living things, the flesh palpitates, the breath comes and goes, every organ lives, life pulsates everywhere." In this extensively illustrated book featuring some 300 illustrations, the author takes a critical look at the life and work of Rafaello Sanzio, or as he signed certain paintings, Raphael Urbinas, in homage to his native city of Urbino. Described as "an artist touched by grace," he is considered, along with Michelangelo and Leonardo, to be one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. Raphael (1483-1520), whose birth and death were on a Good Friday, belonged to a family of merchants; aside from his training in the studio of Perugino, little is known about his earliest years. He arrived in Florence in 1504, where he studied the masters and produced magnificent paintings of the Madonna, as well as remarkable portraits. In 1508 he went to Rome, where he died a dozen years later at the height of his powers, after creating monumental works at the Vatican. De Vecchi re-examines the scholarship surrounding each of the major periods of Raphael's short career, dispelling the myths about him that have accumulated over the centuries. He reminds us that the most "profound" element of Raphael's art was his striving to express the dialectic between earthly and heavenly love, an important concern of his contemporaries. The coverage of the text extends beyond the paintings to Raphael's significant work as an architect and designer of interiors.

When he was born, Michelangelo Buonarroti was put into the care of a stonecutter's family. He often said it was from them that he got his love of sculpture. It certainly didn't come from his own father, a respectable magistrate who beat his son when he asked to become an artists apprentice. But Michelangelo persevered. His early sculptures caught the attention of Florence's great ruler, Lorenzo de' Medici, who invited the boy to be educated with his own sons. Soon after, Michelangelo was astonishing people with the lifelike creations he wrested from marble--from the heartbreaking Pieta he sculpted when he was only twenty-five to the majestic David that brought him acclaim as the greatest sculptor in Italy.Michelangelo had a turbulent, quarrelsome life. He was obsessed with perfection and felt that everyone--from family members to his demanding patrons--took advantage and let him down. His long and difficult association with Pope Julius II yielded his greatest masterpiece, the radiant paintings in the Sistine Chapel, and his most disastrous undertaking, the monumental tomb that caused the artist frustration and heartache for forty years. With her thoroughly researched, lively narrative and superbly detailed illustrations, Diane Stanley has captured the life of an artist who towered above the late Renaissance--and whose brilliance in architecture, painting, and sculpture amazes and moves us to this day.Children's Books 2000-NY Public Lib., Books for Youth Editor's Choice 2000 (Booklist), Lasting Connections 2000 (Book Links), Best Books 2000 (School Library Journal), Top 10 Youth Art Books 2000 (Booklist), and Notable Children's Trade Books in the Field of Social Studies 2001, National Council for SS & Child. A "fast-paced story with a heady mixture of humor, violence, and sex" (Library Journal), this witty and immensely appealing urban fantasy novel features a strip club-owning vampire with memory problems. With his Denis Leary–esque wit and misanthropic outlook on (un)life, Eric is a vampire with issues. Take his memory problems, for example. He not only can’t remember who he ate for dinner yesterday, he doesn’t even remember how he became a vampire in the first place. Then his girlfriend, Tabitha, finally convinces him to turn her into a vampire—and when he does, his desire for her fades. And her younger sister Rachel sure is cute... But when Eric kills a werewolf in self-defense, things really get out of hand. Now a pack of born-again lycanthropes is out for holy retribution, while Tabitha and Rachel each have their own agendas...which may or may not include helping Eric stay in one piece. All Eric wants to do is run his strip club, drink a little blood, and be left alone. Instead, he must survive car crashes, sunlight, sex magic, and werewolves on ice—not to mention his own nasty temper and forgetfulness. Fans who enjoy Charlaine Harris, Jim Butcher, and Kim Harrison will love this unforgettable and subversive dark fantasy novel.

Another slick and glossy David F. Friedman adult classic. Crazy Captain Bob Frigate (SPACE THING's Steve Vincent) has a problem with sex. He hates it. But he has a good reason: midway through balling a hooker, three waterfront thugs attempted to rob him but ended up castrating him with a dock hook instead. (All of which is shown in a scene so startlingly violent and bloody, you're immediately aware that this was, after all, made by the producer of BLOOD FEAST.) Deeply unhinged and living aboard his "100 Foot Twin-Screw Cruiser," Captain Frigate is not happy to learn that his sister, Sally (Chris Mathis), is making it with his first mate, Ron. Things get even more complicated when his boat is then chartered by a movie producer, his director, Phil Latio (yes, folks, that's what he's called), and nymphettes Shari Mann, Lori Brown, and Debbie Hart. As the sex spills all over the ship, and with Miss Mann looking uncomfortably similar to the hooker responsible for his pecker plucking, Captain Bob goes completely cuckoo until it all ends with another bloody dock hook... One seldom praises, let alone notices, the men in the nudies, but much of the enjoyment of Thar She Blows! rests squarely on two of the best actors in the adult film business. Bald and forever middle-aged, Stuart Lancaster chews the scenery as larcenous film producer Kenyon Adler. Best known for his films for Russ Meyer (MUDHONEY, GOOD MORNING AND GOODBYE, SUPERVIXENS, etc.), Lancaster excels in dominant, strong-willed men who are nevertheless easily corrupted by the flesh. Smooth and sleazy, John Alderman (THE FABULOUS BASTARD FROM CHICAGO), as Mr. Latio, is like a Dean Martin gone seedy. Both have a distinctive presence that can easily hold their own against whatever bare breasts are in the scene with them.

When Alija Osmanovic, a Bosnian war orphan who is the protagonist of Knife, goes in search of the identity of his murdered birth-parents, a sense of thwarted justice motivates him, and expresses itself as burning passion for revenge. This is summed up by the novel's title. The opening chapter describes the massacre of a Serbian village by Muslim Ustase on Christmas Day (January 7) of 1942. The sole survivor is a newborn male infant, spared at the last moment and given to a Muslim woman who lost her husband in the raid. The boy is named Alija, and is raised as a Muslim, and later comes to believe that his family was killed by Serbs. Twenty-one years later, Alija, now a medical student in Sarajevo, discovers that the newspapers are interested in his story. An article about him is published in a Sarajevo daily, and he begins receiving mail. Most of it is sympathetic but unhelpful, although he does receive an enigmatic letter which reads: You are certainly not what you are, nevertheless, you are what you are not. Alija seeks out Sikter Effendi, an eccentric and reclusive Muslim cleric, to help him interpret the enigma. Sikter Effendi, an irascible outsider, is, nevertheless, considered to be honest, because he has suffered at the hands of each regime: Ustase as well as Communist. He has responded by developing a fine sense of disgust for the human race, and he steeps himself in history, trying to untangle the threads of misfortune. But when Alija enters the Effendi s life, a transformation occurs. Sikter Effendi finds a spiritual heir. Through Sikter Effendi s mentorship, Alija discovers the truth: that his heritage is Serbian; that he was born not far away but in the neighboring village; and that his adoptive family was guilty of murdering his birth-family. A crisis of identity ensues. Each possible course of action open to him is bad. How is he to go on?

The Bronsons were the first Jews to ever live in the small town of Concordia, Tennessee-a town consisting of one main street, one bank, one drugstore, one picture show, one feed and seed, one hardware store, one beauty parlor, one barber shop, one blacksmith, and many Christian churches. That didn't stop Aaron Bronson, a Russian immigrant, from moving his young family out of New York by horse and wagon and journeying to this remote corner of the South to open a small dry goods store, Bronson's Low-Priced Store. Never mind that he was greeted with "Danged if I ever heard tell of a Jew storekeeper afore." Never mind that all the townspeople were suspicious of any strangers. Never mind that the Klan actively discouraged the presence of outsiders. Aaron Bronson bravely established a business and proved in the process that his family could make a home, and a life, anywhere. With great fondness and a fine dry wit, Stella Suberman tells the story of her family in an account that Kirkus Reviews, in a starred review, described as "a gem...Vividly told and captivating in its humanity." Now available for the first time in paperback, here is the book that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said was "forthright. . . . not a revisionist history of Jewish life in the small-town South but . . . written within the context of the 1920s, making it valuable history as well as a moving family story."

Whispers & Moans, adapted from a book by Yeeshan Yang, examines the underworld of the Hong Kong sex industry and comes away with a surprisingly idealistic view on the so-called oldest profession in the world. A large ensemble cast of characters are used in the film to give insight into the daily lives of the upscale Hong Kong sex workers. The area that "Whispers And Moans" excelled at was displaying the tangled relationships between its vast web of characters. As an example Nana (Mandy Chiang), one of the few disinterested prostitutes in the movie, dated a more "normal" college student named Eric. Nana led Eric to believe that she worked the night shift at a retirement home. Meanwhile, a young college girl named Elsie comes by the hostess bar where Nana works to organize the workers into a union. One day while Nana and Eric are walking together they run into Elsie. Nana learns for the first time that Eric and Elsie are classmates at the same university. Another more convoluted web of relationships was centered around Madame Coco (Athena Chu). One of her many boyfriends was a fellow by the name of Ken. Madame Coco discovers that Ken, her boyfriend for two years, is cheating on her with a transvestite named Jo. The transvestite becomes involved with another man, Tony, who happens to works as a male gigolo. When Jo and Tony go to pick up Jo's belongings from Ken's apartment they run into Madame Coco. This would be the first time that Madame Coco and Jo meet face to face. Jo informs Madame Coco that Ken is in the hospital dying from the late stages of syphilis. Madame Coco quickly goes to the clinic to get her blood tested. Meanwhile Jo's new boyfriend Tony frequently hires the prostitutes working at Madame Coco's hostess bar. He doesn't hire them for sex, but to release his anger by verbally berating the prostitutes. One of his favorite targets would be Nana.

Pitchfork Review: Rating: 8.5 Children's innocence is magic
... Read more
Pitchfork Review: Rating: 8.5 Children's innocence is magical not because of what they don't know-- sex, violence, mortality, Ashton Kutcher-- but how they perceive what they do know. In a child's mind, grown-ups are distinguished by their calves, raindrops on car windows can become aliens racing through space, and long backseat rides furnished with action figures set the stage for Lord of the Rings-scale epics. The Best Party Ever, which compiles the first three singles plus five new tracks from UK-based The Boy Least Likely To, shares that youthful, existential whimsy. This isn't children's music, but it takes a child-like eye to Postcard bedsit pop awash in 1960s California sunshine with hints of country and soul. Recorders, twinkling synths, handclaps, banjos, and glockenspiel accompany the requisitely shambling acoustic guitar on songs about tigers, monsters, growing up, and 'Warm Panda Cola.' The Best Party Ever is a thing of wonder, made out of rubber and springs-- heartache with a sense of humor. Yet above all, The Best Party Ever is as fun as pelting Susie Derkins with water balloons. 'I'm Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon to Your Star' lives up to its lengthy title with the best-ever musical mention of antihistamines and the tale of an ill-fated Nashville excursion over 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' oompahs. 'We never did get famous, but it made us kinda happy and it kept me off of drugs!' Jof explains. 'My Tiger My Heart' recalls a Psapp album title for a ballad that's a bit like 'Puff the Magic Dragon' meets Calvin & Hobbes or Winnie the Pooh, as Jof relates the difficulty of being 'friends with something that eats butterflies and pencil sharpenings.' The album's best song, the dreamy 'Paper Cuts,' channels Brian Wilson via Summerteeth-era Wilco through the lens of Aztec Camera. It's a broken-hearted ballad about helplessness against an ever- changing world, but it also points to the essential precariousness of what makes The Boy Least Likely To so appealing. -Marc Hogan, April 26, 2006
