The indexing attachment offers a way to divide a circle into any number of divisions for operations like milling flats on a bolt head, cutting teeth on a gear or splines on a shaft or drilling multiple holes at regular intervals around a circle. The head has a lever that indexes into a detent at 5° increments. For divisions not divisible by 5° a clever system is used whereby the total travel of a rack gear is measured for one complete revolution of the head. The length is then divided on an electronic calculator by the number of desired divisions. Linear travel of the rack gear can then be measured with the depth rod of a caliper for each increment. The spindle nose accepts standard Sherline ¾-16 and #1 Morse accessories. A tailstock is also provided for holding parts between centers. A section of steel dovetailed material supports both the dividing head and the tailstock. A faceplate and dead centers are also included.
