Very small drills are easily broken if pushed too hard. The leverage of a handwheel sometimes makes it difficult to get a good feel for when a drill is cutting well or when you are pushing too hard. The sensitive drilling attachment allows you to pull a 5/32" Jacobs chuck down by hand. This gives you both a good feel for the cut and helps speed up the process of peck drilling. The chuck accepts drills from 5/32" down to #80 (.0135"). It is spring loaded so it returns to the up position on its own. A knurled ring that turns on a ball bearing is gripped by the operator to pull the chuck down while it is spinning. The chuck mounts easily to the spindle nose by inserting the body inside the spindle and screwing the mount to the ¾-16 threads on the outside of the spindle nose. This drill makes a handy and more sensitive substitute for a quill feed on the mill. Designed for use on a Sherline mill only. Minimize

Using a quill or handwheel feed to advance drills smaller than 1/16" in diameter can lead to broken drills, because the leverage provided by those methods makes it difficult to "feel" how the drill is cutting. If you don't need the micrometer depth control of a handwheel feed, the sensitive drilling attachment will make your small hole drilling tasks easier. The attachment consists of a 5/32" Jacobs drill chuck that slides on a central shaft. The shaft attaches to the spindle with a holder that threads onto the 3/4-16 spindel thread in seconds much like an end mill holder. A spring contained inside the brass spacer tube helps support the chuck and return it to the "up" position. The chuck will hold drill bits from 5/32" to as small as #80 (.0135") The attachment is easy to install in a few seconds. Just insert the spring tube up into the spindle and thread the attachment body onto the spindle thread. To use, grasp the red, knurled ring which rides on a ball bearing on the main shaft. It is said that a mill and a rotary table is the minimum combination of tooling required for a machine to be able to duplicate itself. Mounted on the mill it accurately rotates a part under the cutter. It can be used to drill circular hole patterns, mill the spokes of a wheel, cut gears, flats on a bolt head, splines on a shaft, machine circular parts and more. The 4" diameter table has 4 T-slots for mounting parts and a threaded center hole that goes all the way through the table. The table can be mounted horizontally using angle clamps and T-nuts provided or it can be mounted vertically using the optional 3701 right angle attachment or 3750 tilting angle table. In the vertical position parts can be held between centers using the optional 3702 right angle tailstock. The worm gear has a 72:1 ratio. One revolution of the handwheel moves the table 5°, and the handwheel is marked with 50 divisions, meaning each division represents 0.1° of movement. Therefore, you can divide a circle accurately into 3600 divisions without interpolation. Backlash is adjustable by moving the worm housing. Included are the necessary hold-down clamps and a fixture that screws into the center of the table to allow a Sherline 3-jaw and 4-jaw chuck to be screwed directly to the table.
