Despite an irritating, tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story (it wasn't), Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film. Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist (Barbara Hershey) search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s. What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world. A Dances with Wolves parallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in, but Last of the Dogmen stands up just fine without comparison to any other films. As in Kevin Costner's Oscar-winning movie, however, there are ways in which this film captures a similar sense of yearning, mystery, and loss. --Tom Keogh

The Last of the Finest (1990) Brian Dennehy, Joe PantolianoDirector: John MackenzieCo-stars: Jeff Fahey, Bill Paxton, Lisa Jane Persky106 minutes, ColorDVD-R: Region ALLFour cops make the painful discovery that not everyone on the force is upholding the law in this crime drama. Frank Daly (Brian Dennehy, Wayne Gross (Joe Pantoliano), Ricky Rodriguez (Jeff Fahey), and Howard Jones (Bill Patxon) are four undercover cops with the Los Angeles Police Department who work as a team to solve the cases that their colleagues consider too tough to handle. Under Daly's supervision, the four are trying to get the goods on a drug dealing operation working out of a meat packing plant. However, a raid on the plant uncovers little practical evidence, and Daly, a moody and hard-drinking loose cannon, is sharply criticized by his superiors for planning the bust without the input from the department heads or the FBI. Convinced that there's more to the case than they've been able to find so far, the four men begin looking into the matter on their own time. The deeper they dig, the more shocking the evidence becomes, as they learn that the police, the FBI, and even the Federal Government are involved in the smuggling operation, and the parties involved are perfectly willing to use violence and murder to keep troublemakers out of their way. After Jones is murdered while collecting evidence on a businessman in on the operation, the other three quit the police force, determined to see justice done even if they have to overstep the boundaries of the law to do it.

The Last of the Mohicans (1936) Randolph Scott, Binnie BarnesDirector: George B. SeitzCo-stars: Bruce Cabot, Heather Angel91 minutes, Black and WhiteDVD-R: Region ALLArguably the finest film version of James Fenimore Coopers classic adventure tale, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS benefits from fine performances by Randolph Scott as Hawkeye, Henry Wilcoxon as Maj. Duncan Heyward, and Bruce Cabot as the vicious, lascivious Huron Indian, Magua, one of the most hateful roles in film history. During the height of the French and Indian War, Hawkeye escorts Maj. Heyward, Alice (Binnie Barnes), and Cora Munro (Heather Angel), the daughters of the commander of Ft. William Henry, through hostile lines, accompanied by Chingachgook (Robert Barrat) and his son, Uncas (Philip Reed), who are the last survivors of the Mohican tribe, wiped out by the French-allied Hurons. During the course of their dangerous trek to the fort, Alice becomes enamored of Hawkeye, Cora and Uncas fall in love, and Magua makes life miserable for everyone. Before Chingachgook sends Magua to the happy hunting ground, the sadistic Huron brings about the deaths of both Cora and Uncas. Whats more, the British are routed at Ft. William Henry and Hawkeye is taken prisoner and tied to a stake by the Hurons before Maj. Heyward comes to his rescue.Packed with excitement and well-staged battle scenes, this superbly crafted adventure film was masterfully directed by George B. Seitz and magnificently lensed in Californias High Sierras by Robert Planck. Coopers famous tale has been brought to the screen a number of times (including two 1911 one-reelers; Maurice Tourneur and Clarence Browns smashing 1922 feature-length silent with Wallace Beery as Magua; a ten-chapter 1924 serial version called LEATHERSTOCKING; Mascot Filmss 1932 12-chapter serial with Harry Carey; and a 1947 Columbia version, THE LAST OF THE REDMEN, starring Jon Hall, Evelyn Ankers, and Buster Crabbe as Uncas), but none of these other versions matches the scope and wonderful performances of this extraordinary film. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Clem Beauchamp for Best Assistant Director, losing to Jack Sullivan for THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE.

No owner has changed the landscape of sports more than New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. From the moment he bought the team in 1973 for $10 million, Steinbrenner's monomaniacal pursuit was to restore the most fabled franchise in baseball history to its former glory. Today the New York Yankees are worth more than $1 billion and are once again world champions. Award-winning sportswriter Bill Madden traces Steinbrenner from his early days in Cleveland through his years as a shipping magnate, a Nixon fund-raiser, and a champion horse breeder to the fateful moment when he bought the Yankees, even though his father disparaged George's desire to own a professional sports team as a "hobby." Over the next four decades, Steinbrenner's tumultuous reign included his epic battles with Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, even beloved Yankee captain Derek Jeter. His ruthless and free-spending tactics made him a lightning rod for controversy but they also paid off: Steinbrenner's Yankees have won seven championships and remain the gold standard in all sports. In the last few years, with his health declining, the Boss ceded control of the team to his sons, but not before lording over the team's historic transition from the House That Ruth Built to the House That George Built. Throughout his three decades of covering the Yankees, Bill Madden has cultivated hundreds of sources at every level in the organization, from the many managers and front-office personnel Steinbrenner has fired to the bat boys who are ever present in the locker room. All of them have colorful stories about the man with whom they have enjoyed a love-hate relationship, but it is the Boss himself whose voice rises above the rest. And when Steinbrenner decided to give his final print interview, he spoke to Madden to set the record straight on his extraordinary life and career.

Last of the Buccaneers (1950) Paul Henreid, Jack OakieDirector: Lew LandersCo-stars: Karin Booth, Mary Anderson, John Dehner79 minutes, TechnicolorDVD-R: Region ALLGenerous amounts of stock footage from 1950's Fortunes of Captain Blood made its way into the Sam Katzman production Last of the Buccaneers. Paul Henreid plays famed buccaneer Jean Lafitte, who, after being chased out of Louisiana following the Battle of New Orleans, sets up shop on the island of Galveston. The American authorities leave Lafitte alone, so long as he confines his raids to Spanish vessels. But when one of Lafitte's lieutenants attacks an American ship, it's open season on the handsome pirate. Though Karin Booth is the nominal leading lady, second billing in The Last of the Buccaneers is bestowed upon Jack Oakie, who makes the most of the few comic opportunities he is given.

This striking vision from the mind of director Martin Scorsese offers an allegorical interpretation of the last days of Jesus Christ, based on the book by Nikos Kazantzakis. Based strictly on Kazantzakis's book, the film has a very different focus than past portraits of the "Messiah." This Jesus (Willem Defoe) is a man wracked with doubt over his position among his followers and fear of the role God has chosen for him, as well as the pain that must accompany it. He is unsure whether the messages he receives come from God or Satan, and he is tempted by a mortal life filled with earthly possessions and sensual love, resulting in a controversial, though genuinely sympathetic, account of Christianity's most revered figure.Scorsese establishes a dreamlike mood by combining Michael Ballhauss photography with a transcendent soundtrack by Peter Gabriel in order to fully explore the idea that perhaps Jesus was both God and man. Rather than train his assembled cast to deliver their lines in his

The Last Remake of Beau Geste (1977) Ann-Margret, Marty FeldmanDirector: Marty FeldmanCo-stars: Michael York, Peter Ustinov, James Earl Jones, Trevor Howard, Terry-Thomas, Avery Schreiber85 minutes, TechnicolorDVD-R: Region ALLWritten and directed by funnyman Marty Feldman (best remembered for his appearances in Mel Brooks' spoofs YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and SILENT MOVIE), THE LAST REMAKE OF BEAU GESTE puts a comic spin on the classic 1939 Foreign Legion adventure. Beau Geste (essayed by Gary Cooper in the original) is now played by York; his brother Digby (originally Robert Preston) is played by Feldman. As in the 1939 version, the plot revolves around Beau's heroics in the desert and the disappearance of a priceless family gem, but into this story Feldman tosses anything and everything. Perhaps the best aspect of this rather haphazard production is the cast, which includes James Earl Jones, Henry Gibson, Peter Ustinov, Roy Kinnear, Terry-Thomas, Trevor Howard, and Ann-Margret. Definitely more gags than guns.

On New Year's Eve 1972, following eighteen magnificent seasons in the major leagues, Roberto Clemente died a hero's death, killed in a plane crash as he attempted to deliver food and medical supplies to Nicaragua after a devastating earthquake. David Maraniss now brings the great baseball player brilliantly back to life in Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero, a book destined to become a modern classic. Much like his acclaimed biography of Vince Lombardi, When Pride Still Mattered, Maraniss uses his narrative sweep and meticulous detail to capture the myth and a real man. Anyone who saw Clemente, as he played with a beautiful fury, will never forget him. He was a work of art in a game too often defined by statistics. During his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he won four batting titles and led his team to championships in 1960 and 1971, getting a hit in all fourteen World Series games in which he played. His career ended with three-thousand hits, the magical three-thousandth coming in his final at-bat, and he and the immortal Lou Gehrig are the only players to have the five-year waiting period waived so they could be enshrined in the Hall of Fame immediately after their deaths. There is delightful baseball here, including thrilling accounts of the two World Series victories of Clemente's underdog Pittsburgh Pirates, but this is far more than just another baseball book. Roberto Clemente was that rare athlete who rose above sports to become a symbol of larger themes. Born near the canebrakes of rural Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18, 1934, at a time when there were no blacks or Puerto Ricans playing organized ball in the United States, Clemente went on to become the greatest Latino player in the major leagues. He was, in a sense, the Jackie Robinson of the Spanish-speaking world, a ballplayer of determination, grace, and dignity who paved the way and set the highest standard for waves of Latino players who followed in later generations and who now dominate the game. The Clemente that Maraniss evokes was an idiosyncratic character who, unlike so many modern athletes, insisted that his responsibilities extended beyond the playing field. In his final years, his motto was that if you have a chance to help others and fail to do so, you are wasting your time on this earth. Here, in the final chapters, after capturing Clemente's life and times, Maraniss retraces his final days, from the earthquake to the accident, using newly uncovered documents to reveal the corruption and negligence that led the unwitting hero on a mission of mercy toward his untimely death as an uninspected, overloaded plane plunged into the sea.

As created and written by Roy Clarke the British comedy LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE eventually set a record as the longest-airing sitcom in UK history with a run that began in November 1973 and extended into the 21st century. Episodes detailed the activities of a group of cantankerous trouble-prone old men residents of Holmfirth West Yorkshire England. The program swept up both critical accolades and decades of devoted viewers although given the premise and the ages of the actors various cast permutations were frequent. This particular box set contains all of Series 9 which originally aired on the BBC in 1987. The year begins with Foggy Brian Wilde leaving for the town of Bridlington where he's slated to inherit his uncle's lucrative company; meanwhile retired headmaster-turned-crackpot inventor Seymour Utterthwaite Michael Aldridge turns up with his latest creation - a self-propelled wheelbarrow. Later Clegg Seymour and Compo take a nostalgic trip that reminds them of the university days of their youth; Compo tests out the concept of a gentleman's purse; Seymour decides to install a new garbage disposal in Edie's house with predictably disastrous results; and much more. Installments include GO WITH THE FLOW JAWS and EDIE AND THE AUTOMOBILE.
