With five cyclocross world championships and an incredible number of national titles to its credit, Belgian brand Ridley can be rightly said to be residing at the center of the cyclocross universe. The Ridley X-Fire/SRAM Rival Complete Bike is part of its stable of winning cyclocross bikes; Ridley has been working hand-in-hand with world champions for over a decade, and their requests for innovations have created the unique features that propel the X-Fire ahead of the competition and onto the podium. The Ridley X-Fire/SRAM Rival Complete Bike features a frame constructed of 24-ton carbon fiber, and a full carbon 4ZA Oryx fork. This combination gives the X-Fire just the right amount of stiffness to enable quick acceleration and pickup for dig-in-slippery climbs, but not so much as to break your body apart when you bunny-hop the barrier. Ridley's field experience has also bred a few frame designs that you'll be happy to have when you're running in the mud. For one, the X-Fire has a squared down tube that's more comfortable to put on a shoulder or in a hand on in the runs, and it in turn stiffens the bottom bracket juncture for direct crank efficiency. For protection from the elements and those times when you're running with the bike, Ridley incorporated internal cable routing for the shift cables and the rear brake line. The Oryx fork uses a massive 1-1/8 by 1-1/2in fork crown that eliminates brake chatter and increases lateral rigidity. Ridley even designed the fork shape to shed excess dirt.If you can think of it, Ridley has already done it. The X-Fire is the culmination of a long list of firsts from Ridley; the first full carbon cyclocross frame, the first over-sized carbon cross fork, and the first 1-1/8 by 1-1/2in cyclocross head tube.

Whether you're committing to a 'cross season with less beer and more riding, looking for a speedy commuter, or just want the option to run fatter tires on your training bike, the Ridley X-Bow will be your whip-of-all-trades. The 7005 aluminum frame and carbon/aluminum fork provide stiffness to handle the power-riding that 'cross requires, while the Shimano drivetrain ensures you won't miss a shift when it's time to drop the hammer. Top-down cable routing keeps the important bits out of the slop, and Vittoria tires provide grip in almost all conditions.

Cyclocross is gaining momentum stateside due to spectator friendly action, a relaxed atmosphere, and because it stretches the riding season well into winter-sport territory. Racers of all walks of life compete on bikes ranging from the latest space-age carbon featherweight to hand-crafted steel beauties. One of the great things about cyclocross racing is that you can't buy skill, making those traditional, hand-crafted rides just as competitive on muddy, barrier-peppered courses as the latest and greatest plastic rockets. The Civilian Bicycle Company's Le Roi Le Veut contains the history, attention-to-detail, and aesthetics of a handmade racer, at a price that justifies adding a cyclocross bicycle to your stable.Unsatisfied with the offerings available from mainstream manufacturers, Tyson Hart set out building frames under the Civilian brand in 2005 after attending UBI, a respected frame building school in Ashland, Oregon. Relying on a combination of extensive personal experience and close work with clients, Hart crafted cyclocross, commuting, and mountain bicycles. The distinctive cyclocross bikes saw action around the west coast's popular 'cross series, and quickly gained a cult following for their seamless balance of a fun-to-ride attitude, lively handling, and responsive performance. The Le Roi Le Veut retains the same attention to detail and purposefulness honed in Hart's custom pieces, and is packaged for the masses. The frame is constructed of 4130 double-butted steel tubing. This springy, lightweight steel helps keeps your pocketbook flush, yet offers the durability and supple ride that cyclocross courses demand. Hart shaped the seatstays and chainstays to fight deflection when sprinting for snappy acceleration, but it won't beat you up on bumpy courses, or when jumping back on the saddle after a barrier hop.At the back end of the Le Roi Le Veut reside Tange Design sliding dropouts.

If you need a race-ready 'cross bike that won't obliterate your first-born's college fund, the Ridley X-Ride Rival Bike is up to the task. SRAM Rival shifters and derailleurs are a staple in the 'cross world, and for good reason. DoubleTap shifting technology utilizes a single lever to shift up and down, ensuring your brake lever is always there when you need it. Fulcrum Racing 7 wheels are light enough for racing, and tough enough for you to run into a few rocks on the course without having to run back to the wheel pit.

Who can forget stage 9 of the 2011 Tour de France as we watched horrifying imagery of Vacansoleil-DCM's Johnny Hoogerland as his breakaway companion Juan-Antonio Flecha was struck by a French media car, launching Hoogerland into a barbed wire fence at roadside. The disturbing video still induces cringes every time we watch it. While he would later need 33 stitches to close the gashes he sustained, team doctors patched him up as best they could at the scene, and put him back on the Ridley Helium he'd just crashed. Surprisingly, it was hardly worse for wear. He finished the stage, riding into the Polka Dot jersey and into the storied annals of Tour hardmen. It's nothing short of a miracle that Hoogerland's racing career didn't end in that gruesome moment, but also pretty spectacular that despite the Helium being Ridley's lightest bike, it is also their most battle-hardened, having endured punishment on the cobbles and hors categorie climbs all across Europe. It is a shining example of carbon fiber's supreme durability and longevity in the hands of intelligent design. The Helium tips the scales just over 900 grams, which is less than that of Ridley's pave-flagship Excalibur. This is accomplished through its use of superior grades of carbon fiber. The Helium uses 30-ton carbon with areas of 40-ton and 50-ton reinforcements (in comparison to the 24-ton carbon used on the Excalibur.) By using higher-grade carbon, Ridley can use less carbon in the production process, netting a lower frame weight. The Helium also utilizes full carbon dropouts and doesn't use any aluminum in the head tube bearing races to reduce weight further. And when you factor in the detail that you need to use a conventional seatpost on an Excalibur, but you don't on a Helium, the real net difference in weight is well over a half-pound . Unlike the Excalibur, the Helium features an integrated seatmast design akin to the super-aero Ridley Noah.

The Excalibur is Ridley's best-selling race frame for good
... Read more
The Excalibur is Ridley's best-selling race frame for good reason. Some of it is self-evident: At 1100 grams, it's second only to the Helium in Ridley's spectrum of lightness. This is because the Helium uses higher grade carbon fiber (and therefore less of it) netting a lower weight, while the Excalibur relies on 24 ton material with 30 ton reinforcements in the high stress areas of the frame. This is where the cost savings are derived, but don't think that you'll sacrifice stiffness or performance one bit. And, like the Helium, the Excalibur utilizes full carbon dropouts and head tube to reduce weight even further. Unlike the triangulated "Sharp Edge Design" you find on the Damocles, or the super-aero tubes of the Noah, the Excalibur is built with oversized round tubes. Here's a good tip: If you're interested in assessing the likely torsional stiffness of a frame without even riding it, inspect the girth of its tubing and junctures -- larger diameter tubes resist deflection better than small. Then take a long look at the headtube/down tube juncture and the down tube/BB juncture of the Excalibur and utter a big "WOW." You'll verify this stiffness under power on the first ride as the Excalibur leaps with every pedal stroke. While you might look at the Excalibur and think it's a mere kermesse bike -- the sort of "grip it and rip it" rocketship suited for little more than the warp speed circuit races so popular throughout Ridley's homeland of Belgium, think again. It was the team bike of the UCI Continental Pro Team Unibet. Unibet riders cracked the top-20 in 6+ hour epics such as the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, as well as a host of other rough-and-tumble spring classics on the worst roads of Belgium and northern France. Team Unibet knew the secret of the Excalibur: Its oversized tubing gives it top fuel racer-like acceleration and resistance to flex, but it won't brutalize you when you head out the door for a 5-hour cruise in your 53x19.

We've come a long way from the Giro "ice chest" aero helmet
... Read more
We've come a long way from the Giro "ice chest" aero helmet that Greg Lemond wore when he rode to a last stage upset of Laurent Fignon in the '89 Tour. In a similar twist of the general classification, Levi Leipheimer overcame a two minute deficit coming into a last stage time trial to leapfrog up the standings to win his first Tour de Suisse in 2011. He did this while wearing the Giro Selector Helmet. It's the successor to the longstanding benchmark for aero helmets, the Giro Advantage. As you might expect, Giro has used wind tunnel data to sculpt the new helmet to make it slicker and faster than the Advantage. And for most riders, a sleek helmet will do as much or more for lessening the overall drag coefficient as any other static change you could make to your bike or personal gear. The Selector has two significant upgrades that not only make it your best choice for aerodynamics, but that necessitated changes to help make it more comfortable as well. The first thing you'll notice is that it's the first Giro helmet with an eyeshield. Its strict purpose is to further enhance the aero properties of the helmet by smoothing the leading surface. Another tangible benefit you'll realize is a quieter experience as you ride. If nothing else, we've found that this perception of less wind noise acts as a placebo -- less noise, less resistance, more speed, etc. It's removable if you prefer to wear sunglasses, however. The lens also has two vents, located on either side of the centerline at the top edge. They minimize the chance for fogging on humid days, and they duct a sizeable volume of cooling air to flow over the head and out the twin exhaust ports in the tail of the helmet. The back of the helmet is where you'll find the other big changes. Where the Advantage had a tail that was open on the underside, the Selector Helmet is closed, akin to a belly pan on an F1 car.

The Ridley Orion Ultegra Complete Bike is an exercise in pleasant surprises. Firstly, the price. It's a full-carbon fiber frame that borrows technical pedigree and geometry from Ridley's pro-level bikes, and is fitted with a race-ready gruppo for under $3000. Secondly, the Orion offers a phenomenally versatile platform on which you can competitively train, ride recreationally, and race, while still allowing room to grow and upgrade as you progress through your local ranks. It's Ridley's full-fledged value option, and worth more than a second glance if you're looking to get the most from your money. The Orion has an oversized, semi-round/semi-square downtube with a reinforced bottom bracket to maximize stiffness and power transfer. It's reminiscent in our minds of the 'Squoval' tubing on the Cervelo R3 AAA its rounded boxy shape is difficult to explain in words, but is directly correlated to its resistance to torsional and lateral flex. It's no different from the Helium, Noah, Damocles, and Excalibur. The Orion is a pure race bike, and it's at home in any conditions AAA flat or hilly, smooth roads or jarring. And not unlike the Excalibur, Ridley built the Orion with mono seat stays to deliver the sort of compliant ride that's nice on shorter rides, and absolutely necessary when you're out for upwards of four hours. You can rest assured that its stiffness under power doesn't make it a jackhammer on chip seal roads. Also like other Ridley frames raced in the pro tour, the Orion is built as a monocoque. This one-piece construction method allows greater quality control and a lighter final structure. It's made from 24-ton carbon fiber. By definition, it has a tensile strength of 24 tons per square centimeter. It's less expensive than the 30-ton and 40-ton carbon used in the Damocles and Noah, which means they have to use a bit more of it to achieve the intended stiffness and strength. However, the Orion foregoes the cosmetic layer of carbon.

The simple technology of wind trainers revolutionized indoo
... Read more
The simple technology of wind trainers revolutionized indoor bike riding. Before wind trainers you pretty much had two options: ride your bike on rollers with no resistance or ride an insanely expensive ergometer where you couldn't replicate your road riding position. All the same, wind trainers had drawbacks aplenty. Kinetic by Kurt has addressed the weaknesses of traditional wind resistance units with the Cyclone Wind Trainer, one that rides well, travels well, and comes in at a great price.Early wind resistance units were simply "squirrel cageAAA fans -- small diameter, louvered cylinders running off tiny rollers that spun quickly and were painfully noisy when going all out. The units were so light, there was almost no momentum in the unit while riding and the moment you let off the gas, speed would drop to nothing. Another problem was their durability; it was too easy to knock the fan out of true or damage the louvers when you traveled with them in your trunk along with other race gear.Working with the idea that they needed to produce wind resistance and have some sense of momentum, Kinetic by Kurt made their roller 2.5AAA in diameter for easier rolling, less tire wear, and quieter operation. They also decided to work with two fans on either side of the tire roller. Each fan is 6AAA in diameter and weighs 2.2 lbs. In other words, they both act to produce resistance and provide momentum. And because of their design and heft, the fan wheels are plenty durable. The noise of the spinning fan blades doesn't become noticeable until 25mph, and at that point you'll be cranking out 349 watts (check out power curve here) anyway. At that point, the noise might even be a motivator. Kinetic by Kurt has found that their sponsored pro riders enjoy the attention it brings to their time trial warm-ups.The frame, green as always, is the same as used with the Road Machine. The base is 32AAA (81.28cm) wide when open.
