The Story

I am a Star Wars fan, yes, I know, I need a new hobby – however, the force is strong in this one. When George Lucas announced the release of the Blu-ray edition set with never before deleted scenes, needless to say, I began drooling uncontrollably. Therefore, it was added to my Christmas wish list for 2011.

Low and behold, I must have avoided the naughty list this past Christmas because I received the ever amazing Blu-Ray set along with a Blu-ray player (as I had not yet purchased one – I know, behind the times right). Therefore, I will give you a quick and dirty review of the BDP-BX38 Sony network Blu-ray disc player.

The Details

It takes just a few minutes to set up with a simple large instructional guide to help you connecting the included HDMI cable and power cord. Older Blu-ray players were slow due to crappy CPU’s to save on costs that frustrated many users and even some new off brand Blu-ray players are slow, taking a minute or more to load a disc. However, this beauty takes just a few seconds to load a DVD and 15-30 seconds to load a Blu-ray disc (depends on disc and firmware version).

I had no problems connecting to the LAN100 terminal on the back of the device and it seamless connected to my network. With built in apps for streaming services like Hulu Plus, Netflix and others, this is a top choice for the price. One amazing feature is that you can download an app for your iPhone or Android phone and use it to control your Sony Blu-ray Disc player, just another cool feature making Sony devices stand above the rest.

It produces quality sound through either the digital coaxial or the standard audio outputs. The video quality is top notch with Full 1080p HD using an HDMI cord.

Why You Need One

It’s under $100! It has network connectivity, and cool apps along with Full HD 1080p playback with a fast load time. It is simple to install no matter how tech savvy you are and has a slim profile with a sleek black design. Lastly, it has a front facing USB device for connecting your digital devices like cameras, camcorders, and alike.

In the End

It costs the same as other low end Network Blu-ray Disc Players yet has more features, comes with a warranty backed by a high end name, and can be purchased at Costco with their amazing warranty on electronics. Lastly, lower end players do not come with an HDMI cable, which can cost upwards of $10 or $20 – so why choose anything else – stick with a Sony!

Side Note: Less fluff, straight to the core ... Lean & Mean :-)
