Though Franz Joseph Haydn did not ''invent'' the string quartet, he is often considered the ''Father of the String Quartet'' because of his huge contribution to the genre. Within this medium, he was extremely prolific; 83 works for quartet are attributed to him. Some of those pieces have, in recent years, been deemed spurious by scholars (i.e., they may possibly be the work of other composers), but the body of compositions believed to be Haydn's is still quite large. Not only did he compose a great quantity of quartets, but the quality of those pieces is very high - setting such a standard for this type of composition that later composers, including Mozart and Beethoven, would pattern their quartets on his, striving for their exquisite beauty and perfection. Haydn's String Quartet in C Major, Op. 76, No. 3, Hob. III:77 , is also known as the ''Emperor'' quartet (or ''Kaiser'' in German), and is one of his most famous and beloved works for string quartet. The name comes from the sublime second movement, in which Haydn quotes an anthem he composed for Emperor Francis II, the last ruler of the Holy Roman Empire. The melody is quite famous, and later became the German national anthem - a post it still holds today. This edition contains parts for two violins, viola, and cello, and is edited by Simon Rowland-Jones. Published by Edition Peters. Difficulty: A5

Joseph Haydn's symphonies and string quartets are staples of the concert repertory, yet many aspects of this founding genius of the Viennese Classical style are only beginning to be explored. From local Kapellmeister to international icon, Haydn achieved success by developing a musical language aimed at both the connoisseurs and amateurs of the emerging musical public. In this volume, the first collection of essays in English devoted to this composer, a group of leading musicologists examines Haydn's works in relation to the aesthetic and cultural crosscurrents of his time.Haydn and His World opens with an examination of the contexts of the composer's late oratorios: James Webster connects the Creation with the sublime--the eighteenth-century term for artistic experience of overwhelming power--and Leon Botstein explores the reception of Haydn's Seasons in terms of the changing views of programmatic music in the nineteenth century. Essays on Haydn's instrumental music include Mary Hunter on London chamber music as models of private and public performance, fortepianist Tom Beghin on rhetorical aspects of the Piano Sonata in D Major, XVI:42, Mark Evan Bonds on the real meaning behind contemporary comparisons of symphonies to the Pindaric ode, and Elaine R. Sisman on Haydn's Shakespeare, Haydn as Shakespeare, and "originality." Finally, Rebecca Green draws on primary sources to place one of Haydn's Goldoni operas at the center of the Eszterháza operatic culture of the 1770s.The book also includes two extensive late-eighteenth-century discussions, translated into English for the first time, of music and musicians in Haydn's milieu, as well as a fascinating reconstruction of the contents of Haydn's library, which shows him fully conversant with the intellectual and artistic trends of the era.

The Seven Last Words of Christ, Op. 51, Hob. III:50-56 was commissioned and composed as an orchestral piece in 1787 for a Good Friday service for the cathedral in Cdiz, Spain. This particular cathedral had a well-known penchant for the dramatic: Haydn was to write thematically-appropriate music for the interludes following the priest's reading of the traditional last words of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion, taken from the four Gospels in the New Testament. Haydn ended up with a slow introduction, seven ''sonatas'' on the text (all slow movements), and, as the final movement, an unexpected Presto meant to evoke the earthquake described in Matthew's gospel, directly following Jesus' last breath. It is a difficult, taxing piece of music, both to play and to listen to, but has long been a favorite among Haydn's works, especially in its iteration for string quartet (transcribed, supposedly, by Haydn himself). As programmatic music, it is most obviously appropriate for use in church services during Lent and Holy Week, but can certainly be adapted to the concert hall very easily, and to great effect. Some groups performing the work have substituted for the traditional readings poems on the crucifixion of Christ; others have commissioned artists to paint or sculpt pieces on the themes, which are then displayed during the performance of the music. ... Read more
Some of Franz Schubert's most popular scores lie in the realm of his chamber music, which the composer introduced to the world along with his songs in intimate Viennese gatherings dubbed "Schubertiades." This newly repackaged four-CD andante anthology serves as a virtual Schubertiade, as it showcases Schubert's chamber gems via classic recordings by some of the pre-war era's greatest musicians. The performances include, among others, Fritz Kreisler and Sergei Rachmaninoff in the "Grand Duo," Adolf Busch and Rudolf Serkin in the C Major Fantasie, the Cortot/Casals/Thibaud Trio in the B-flat Major Piano Trio, and the Pro Arte Quartet with Anthony Pini in the String Quintet. The rare vintage 78s were digitally remastered by Art & Son Studio in Paris using the 24-bit "CAP 440" technique. In its redesigned edition (with new slipcase), the deluxe 96-page book contains evocative images of the composer and rarely seen, painstakingly presented photos of the performers. The expanded texts — in English, French and German — include an introduction by Pulitzer Prize–winner Tim Page, an essay by Paul Turok, and detailed artist bios from "The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians."

A vivid portrait of Mozart and Haydn's greatest
... Read more
A vivid portrait of Mozart and Haydn's greatest achievements and young Beethoven's works under their influence.Completing the trilogy begun with Haydn, Mozart and the Viennese School, 1740-1780 and continued in Music in European Capitals: The Galant Style, 1720-1780, Daniel Heartz concludes his extensive chronicle of the Classical Era with this much-anticipated third volume. By the early years of the nineteenth century, "Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven" had become a catchphrase—a commonplace expression signifying musical excellence. Indeed, even in his early career, Beethoven was hailed as the only musician worthy to stand beside Haydn and Mozart. In this volume, Heartz winds up the careers of Haydn and Mozart (who during the 1780s produced their most famous and greatest works) and describes Beethoven's first decade in Vienna, during which he began composing by patterning his works on the two masters. The tumult and instability of the French Revolution serves as a vivid historical backdrop for the tale. 45 illustrations; 163 music examples
