This is a book that is certain to stir the soul with echoes, in both music and words, of the passion of Christ. That event transcends time or season; its power to uplift and inspire is endless. In 1786 Franz Joseph Haydn wrote what he considered to be his greatest composition, The Seven Last Words of Christ. Today it continues to provide musical and spiritual nourishment for millions through a format that links its seven main movements to spoken meditations on the seven final utterances of Jesus. The Vermeer String Quartet, in dozens of performances of this masterpiece throughout the world, has been joined by some of the foremost religious figures of our time for meditations on the seven last words. This book offers printed versions of more than 60 of them, along with seven spoken meditations as part of the complete musical performance on one of the accompanying disks. Meditations include contributions by Martin Luther King, Jr., Martin Marty, Virgil Elizondo, Raymond Brown, Peter Gomes, Andrew Greeley, Jean Bethke Elshtain and many more. There are also in-depth essays by theologian Martin Marty, historian Grover A. Zinn, ethicist Jean Bethke Elshtain and the Vermeer's Richard Young. On a second disk, Young demonstrates how Haydn's composition embodies the emotion of the seven last words.Echoes from Calvary offers many hours of spiritual reflection and devotion. It is a treasury of insights for any life, in any season.

Though Franz Joseph Haydn did not ''invent'' the string quartet, he is often considered the ''Father of the String Quartet'' because of his huge contribution to the genre. Within this medium, he was extremely prolific; 83 works for quartet are attributed to him. Some of those pieces have, in recent years, been deemed spurious by scholars (i.e., they may possibly be the work of other composers), but the body of compositions believed to be Haydn's is still quite large. Not only did he compose a great quantity of quartets, but the quality of those pieces is very high - setting such a standard for this type of composition that later composers, including Mozart and Beethoven, would pattern their quartets on his, striving for their exquisite beauty and perfection. Haydn's String Quartet in C Major, Op. 76, No. 3, Hob. III:77 , is also known as the ''Emperor'' quartet (or ''Kaiser'' in German), and is one of his most famous and beloved works for string quartet. The name comes from the sublime second movement, in which Haydn quotes an anthem he composed for Emperor Francis II, the last ruler of the Holy Roman Empire. The melody is quite famous, and later became the German national anthem - a post it still holds today. This edition contains parts for two violins, viola, and cello, and is edited by Simon Rowland-Jones. Published by Edition Peters. Difficulty: A5

The Seven Last Words of Christ, Op. 51, Hob. III:50-56 was commissioned and composed as an orchestral piece in 1787 for a Good Friday service for the cathedral in Cdiz, Spain. This particular cathedral had a well-known penchant for the dramatic: Haydn was to write thematically-appropriate music for the interludes following the priest's reading of the traditional last words of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion, taken from the four Gospels in the New Testament. Haydn ended up with a slow introduction, seven ''sonatas'' on the text (all slow movements), and, as the final movement, an unexpected Presto meant to evoke the earthquake described in Matthew's gospel, directly following Jesus' last breath. It is a difficult, taxing piece of music, both to play and to listen to, but has long been a favorite among Haydn's works, especially in its iteration for string quartet (transcribed, supposedly, by Haydn himself). As programmatic music, it is most obviously appropriate for use in church services during Lent and Holy Week, but can certainly be adapted to the concert hall very easily, and to great effect. Some groups performing the work have substituted for the traditional readings poems on the crucifixion of Christ; others have commissioned artists to paint or sculpt pieces on the themes, which are then displayed during the performance of the music. ... Read more
Joseph Haydn's symphonies and string quartets are staples of the concert repertory, yet many aspects of this founding genius of the Viennese Classical style are only beginning to be explored. From local Kapellmeister to international icon, Haydn achieved success by developing a musical language aimed at both the connoisseurs and amateurs of the emerging musical public. In this volume, the first collection of essays in English devoted to this composer, a group of leading musicologists examines Haydn's works in relation to the aesthetic and cultural crosscurrents of his time.Haydn and His World opens with an examination of the contexts of the composer's late oratorios: James Webster connects the Creation with the sublime--the eighteenth-century term for artistic experience of overwhelming power--and Leon Botstein explores the reception of Haydn's Seasons in terms of the changing views of programmatic music in the nineteenth century. Essays on Haydn's instrumental music include Mary Hunter on London chamber music as models of private and public performance, fortepianist Tom Beghin on rhetorical aspects of the Piano Sonata in D Major, XVI:42, Mark Evan Bonds on the real meaning behind contemporary comparisons of symphonies to the Pindaric ode, and Elaine R. Sisman on Haydn's Shakespeare, Haydn as Shakespeare, and "originality." Finally, Rebecca Green draws on primary sources to place one of Haydn's Goldoni operas at the center of the Eszterhza operatic culture of the 1770s.The book also includes two extensive late-eighteenth-century discussions, translated into English for the first time, of music and musicians in Haydn's milieu, as well as a fascinating reconstruction of the contents of Haydn's library, which shows him fully conversant with the intellectual and artistic trends of the era.

Josef HAYDN: Gypsy Rondo Transcribed for Piano Quintet by Harry Wimmer A Quintet of Gypsies - Or How This Irreverent Transcription Came About: The Gypsy Rondo is probably Haydns most popular composition. It is, of course, the Finale of his Piano Trio In G, Hob XV/25, officially known as the Rondo allOngarese. It is the perfect encore piece and is therefore often performed by itself at the end of a concert. It has everything: a bright, catchy, busy tune, somber interludes in the minor key, twirling dance-like figures and, of course, a flashy ending. This transcription came about when the arranger, Harry Wimmer, needed a brilliant encore piece for a Symphony Space chamber music concert ending with a Piano Quintet on stage. He thought immediately of Haydns Gypsy Rondo, So, on short notice, he added an extra violin and viola part plus some subterranean flourishes and rumblings. Thus the Piano Quintet version was born and premired on March 14, 2008.
