Fred Astaire: one of the great jazz artists of the twentieth century? Astaire is best known for his brilliant dancing in the movie musicals of the 1930s, but in Music Makes Me, Todd Decker argues that Astaire's work as a dancer and choreographer --particularly in the realm of tap dancing--made a significant contribution to the art of jazz. Decker examines the full range of Astaire's work in filmed and recorded media, from a 1926 recording with George Gershwin to his 1970 blues stylings on television, and analyzes Astaire's creative relationships with the greats, including George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, and Johnny Mercer. He also highlights Astaire's collaborations with African American musicians and his work with lesser known professionals--arrangers, musicians, dance directors, and performers.

Drawing on meticulous research, sharp wit, and insightful analysis, Richard Barrios illuminates the origins of the movie musical in this extensively revised and updated edition of his highly acclaimed A Song in the Dark. From Warner Bros. and Jolson, to the Oscar-winning Broadway Melody and beyond, here is the whole funny and peculiar history of these films, their creators, and their audiences. Ranging from the smash hits of The Singing Fool and Sunny Side Up to bizarre flops like Golden Dawn and Cecil B. DeMille's Madam Satan, they form a body of work unlike anything else in the history of popular entertainment. Here too are legendary performers, directors, and composers: from Fannie Brice, James Cagney, and Mae West, to Busby Berkeley, George and Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, and countless others. With many new rare photographs, some not published in nearly 80 years, this new edition traces the rise and fall, and rise again, of this quintessential piece of the American experience.

This book is a study of a crucial period in the life of American jazz and popular music. Pearl Harbor Jazz analyses the changes in the world of the professional musician brought about both by the outbreak of World War II and by long-term changes in the music business, in popular taste and in American society itself. It describes how the infrastructure of American music, the interdependent fields of recording, touring, live engagements, radio and the movies, was experiencing change in the conditions of wartime, and how this impacted upon musical styles, and hence upon the later history of popular music. Successive chapters of the book examine the impact of these changed conditions upon the songwriting and music publishing industries, upon the world of the touring big bands, and upon changing conceptions of the role of jazz and popular music. Not only the economic conditions but also ideas were changing; the book traces a movement among writers and critics which created new definitions of 'jazz' and other terms that had a permanent influence on the way musical styles were thought of for the rest of the century. The book deals in some depth with the work of a number of important artists in these various fields, including, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Johnny Mercer and Frank Sinatra, looks at the growing presence of bebop, the rise of country music, and the contemporary musical scenes in such locations as New York and Los Angeles. The book combines detail of the day to day working lives of musicians with challenging views of the long-term development of musical style in jazz and popular music. Peter Townsend lectures at Manchester Metropolitan University and in the School of Music at the University of Huddersfield, England

“Thanks for the Memory.” “Swinging on a Star.” “The Way You Look Tonight.” Three great and popular standards of the American songbook—and all three won Oscars for best song. But who wrote these songs? What movies were they written for? Which stars introduced them? In the 25 years covered by this fascinating book, 160 songs were nominated for Academy Awards. Some are well known, but many are nearly forgotten. They deserve more lasting recognition. Best Songs of the Movies tells the stories behind all these songs, year by year. After announcing the nominated songs, the text describes the way each song was presented and performed, critiques the lyrics and melody, and provides appropriate historical and biographical insights. One appendix presents brief biographies of all the lyricists and composers responsible for these songs; another lists the Oscar-nominated and winning songs from 1959 through 2003. A bibliography and index complete the volume.

This 12 disc set brings together the five complete recordings of famous Broadway musicals made under the direction of the American conductor and musical theatre archivist John McGlinn -- Show Boat (1927) by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, Cole Porter's Anything Goes (1934), Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun (1946), Lerner and Loewe's Brigadoon (1947) and Porter's Kiss Me, Kate (1948). The Show Boat recording also contains a substantial amount of extra material cut from the original production before opening or written for subsequent revivals and the 1936 film. Also included here are three compendium CDs of show material by out - standing composers like Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Vincent Youmans and Leonard Bernstein, and a collection of overtures by three of the greatest Broadway composers of the first half of the 20th century -- Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Jerome Kern. All these recordings have been meticulously prepared by McGlinn using the original orchestrations and arrangements, and the performers include some of the finest stars of the musical and operatic stage led by Kim Criswell, Frederica von Stade, Teresa Stratas, Jerry Hadley and Thomas Hampson. John McGlinn's untimely death in 2009 at the age of 55 was a great loss to all admirers of the American musical theatre and this release is dedicated to his memory.
