This is a comprehensive biography of the French composer Gabriel Faure for the general reader, placing his work in the context of his times. Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) is one of the best-loved French composers of his era: works such as his Requiem, "Pavane", "Dolly Suite, and "Cantique de Jean Racine" are perennial favourites. But Faure's importance runs far deeper. His music has a unique blend of vigour and restraint, sensuality and purity: an individual voice with a degree of integrity that helped him to resist the overwhelming forces - notably the music of Wagner - that held his Parisian contemporaries in thrall. His artistic independence served to inspire many of the next generation of French composers seeking to create a new Gallic identity beyond World War I. At the Paris Conservatoire, Faure's composition teaching was vital to such figures as Maurice Ravel, Nadia Boulanger and Charles Koechlin; when he ultimately became the Conservatoire's director, his reforms were the most radical the institution had yet experienced. Faure has often been thought of as a dreamy, somewhat unworldly individual; this book, however, reveals his ambition and decisiveness. Born in southern France and educated at the Ecole Niedermeyer rather than the powerful Paris Conservatoire, he struggled for years to achieve recognition from France's musical establishment, which often deemed him a dangerous outsider; in his personal life he struggled also against bouts of depression, an unsatisfactory marriage and, later, devastating deafness. Faure's life and works are explored in the context of the creative melting pot of fin-de-siecle Paris. His relationship with such figures as Saint-Saens, Liszt, Proust and Verlaine are considered in detail and help to create a portrait of this fascinating milieu. This biography, which charts Faure's long and difficult rise to fame, sets out to illuminate his individuality and reveal his enduring legacy to French music.

Chamber works by Fauré, the influential composer who bridge
... Read more
Chamber works by Fauré, the influential composer who bridged the Romantic and Modern era in French music, are performed by a magnificent line-up of French and French-trained musicians. Quintessentially Gallic in its amalgam of classical rigour, inventive harmonic language and subtle, but arresting sensuality, Fauré's chamber music is here performed by nine leading French-born musicians - violinist Renaud Capuçon, violist Gérard Caussé, cellists Gautier Capuçon and Raphaël Merlin, pianist Michel D'Alberto, string quartet Quatuor Ebène - and an honorary Frenchman, US-born, Paris-trained pianist Nicholas Angelich. The four CDs comprise works for two, three, four and five instruments and span the composer's career from early works, influenced by his teacher Saint-Saëns, to the more rarefied compositions of his later years. The Capuçon brothers and Angelich - brought together by none other than Martha Argerich - are firmly established as a performing trio. Their recordings of Brahms chamber music for Virgin Classics prompted Gramophone to say that: "Nicholas Angelich and the two Capuçons play in a way that's sure to kindle anyone's enthusiasm for Brahms. Warm, beautifully balanced tone stresses the composer's romantic side, as does the expansive phrasing. There's a feeling of spontaneity, too, as though each player is discovering new aspects to the music while recording it ... the way they are able to strike a balance between Brahms's energetic flow of ideas, his strongly delineated structures and his lyric intensity is most satisfying," while International Record Review felt that "the performances here are both beautiful and individual, with passionate, rich-toned playing and infectious energy." When they played Brahms' C minor Piano Quartet with Gérard Caussé at Wigmore Hall in London, the Daily Telegraph (UK) admired the way "they beautifully conveyed the sense of some immense unspoken tragedy lurking behind the music," adding "but it was the consoling beauty of the slow movement that really told." Fauré's String Quartet, composed at the end of his life, featured on the Quatuor Ebène's first Virgin Classics CD with works by Debussy and Ravel (who studied with Fauré). It became Gramophone's 2009 Record of the Year, also winning Germany's Echo Klassik Award 2009, Belgium's Prix Caecilia 2009, and, in 2010, France's Victoire de la Musique. Commenting on the Ebène's performance of the Fauré, the Independent (UK) commented that "they brilliantly negotiate the contrast between the melancholy cast of the first two movements and the more contented, even animated tone of the final movement, by allowing the lingering impressions of the second movement's see-sawing undulations to haunt the rest of the piece," while their approach to Debussy - who was born after Fauré, but predeceased him, and whose aesthetic is related to the older composer's - was summed up thus by Die Presse in Austria: "The Quatuor Ebène ensures that scrupulously conceived musical structures are also sensuous in quality, and the musicians are sensitive to the play of tensions in directional chordal shadings - that beauty in dissonance, so to speak, which can so captivate the listener."

Johnson (accompaniment, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, UK) examines the songs of French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) within the context of his life and the lives of poets whose texts he used, such as Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Leconte de Lisle, Armand Silvestre, Charles Van Lerberghe, Victor Hugo, and Jean de La Ville de Mirmont. Each of Fauré's 109 songs is analyzed in chronological order, with historical and biographical context, and discussion of their features, interpretation, and style, along with chapters on the interpretation and performance of the songs by singers and pianists. English translations are provided. Johnson directed a project in which each of the songs was performed by student singers and pianists, and the book is the outcome of that experience. Producer: Robert Huber. An elegant evening of French symphonic music and the songs of Maurice Chevalier s Paris My Paris is designed as a stand-alone concert, which may also be presented as the second half of a symphonic pops concert. The orchestra opens with the music of such composers as Saint-Saëns, Darius Milhaud, Maurice Ravel, Eric Satie, Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré. My Paris follows intermission. Enhance the French ambiance of the evening with a champagne reception, bilingual announcements and program notes, black-tie or period dress suggested. My Paris is ideal for a fundraiser or similar gala event. Songs arranged for symphonic orchestra by Peter Matz, one of the foremost musical director/arranger/composers in every medium of entertainment. He received three Emmy Awards for My Name is Barbra, The Sounds of Burt Bacharach and The Carol Burnett Show (during his 8-year engagement as the show s musical director), and a Grammy Award for Barbra Streisand s People album, among the five he arranged for her. He also had two Tony nominations, a Clio Award and an Academy Award nomination for the Streisand film, Funny Lady. Matz s original scores for more than 40 other feature films and television movies earned additional critical acclaim. He also arranged and conducted for such legends as Noel Coward, Marlene Dietrich, Bernadette Peters, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Bing Crosby, Liza Minnelli, and Tony Bennett. Peter Matz contributed arrangements and orchestrations to five annual Academy Awards telecasts. Tony Sandler s My Paris was the final project of the late Peter Matz. Tony Sandler is under contract with Huber Entertainment Group, Inc. Tony records under the Butterfly Label through Butterfly Productions.

Contained on this one disc are some of the major French compositions of this century. Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin (1917) was written to the memory of friends of Ravel who were killed in World War I. Astonishingly, Ravel gives to the tombeau (an 18th century dance) a quirky 20th-century feel. A true masterpiece. Also here are two of the three Gymnopedies of Erik Satie, orchestrated by Debussy. Fauré is represented by his "Pelleas et Melisande" suite. The miracle here is that they translate well to the chamber orchestra size. The Orpheus group were born playing this music. --Paul Cook

The duo team of cellist Steven Doane and pianist Barry Snyder made a number of award-winning recordings for Bridge Records in the 1990s. Their traversal of the complete music for cello and piano of Gabriel Fauré won several awards, including a citation in the French journal Repertoire. The duo returns with superbly wrought renderings of two major Rachmaninoff masterpieces-the heartbreakingly beautiful cello sonata, and the virtuosic Études-tableaux, Op. 39 for solo piano. These other Doane/Snyder recordings are available from Bridge: Gabriel Fauré: The Complete Music for Cello and Piano (BRIDGE 9038); Frank Bridge: Spring Song; Sonata; Mélodie; Scherzo; Benjamin Britten: Sonata in C, Op. 65 (BRIDGE 9056).

This is a collection of the most famous songs of Fauré. Diction lessons were recorded by coach, conductor and diction specialist Pierre Vallet. The diction for each song is recorded twice: first recited as an actor would speak it, showing flow of the language and mood, followed by a slow, deliberate lesson, allowing time for the student to repeat each line. This experienced language coach adapts the ''R'' in French in the slow versions as recommended for classical singers. He is also very sensitive to liaisons between word sounds in musical settings. Contents: Après un rêve * Au bord de l'eau * Aurore * Automne * Chanson d'amour * Clair de lune * Ici-bas * Le Secret * Les berceaux * Les roses d'Ispahan * Lydia * Mandoline * Nell * Notre amour * Rencontre.

Frustrated Accompanist Series: Gabriel Fauré - Elegie for Cello, Op. 24 This series is terrific and unique! Many currently available piano accompaniments are clumsy, if not outright unplayable, causing frustration; the average accompanist must leave out some notes in difficult sections. Carol Leybourn's reductions are technique-friendly to many accompanists, and music teachers and parents with some knowledge of the piano will love this series! An alternate ending to the first movement is provided for ''first movement only'' performance. Arranged and published by Carol Leybourn. Difficulty: Intermediate NOTE: This item is a PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT only, and does NOT include a separate cello part.
