Known for a voice as mellow as his moniker, "The Velvet Fog," Mel Torme was an accomplished vocalist, pianist, drummer, songwriter, arranger and author. Leaving a recording legacy of jazz and popular music, his death in June 1999 ended an entertainment career spanning over sixty years. This comprehensive discography is intended not only for the Torme enthusiast, but the casual fan as well, who may only know Tormé for his Night Court television appearances or as vocalist and co-writer of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," which was first recorded by Nat "King" Cole. Included are a selective chronology providing the highlights of Torme's career as an entertainer; notes on record issues, recording dates, session numbers, takes, musicians and arrangers; lists of all musical releases by label and category; "hits" and awards; and indexes of song titles and musicians. Films, short subjects, stage appearances, and television work (recorded on video) in which he acted, performed musically, or served as a contributor are noted, as are books that Torme wrote, or to which he contributed.

Ingrid Fliter is a one-off, the kind of pianist we have not seen in years. She plays Beethoven with an old-master's touch and Chopin with reckless passion. (La Scena Musicale) For her third EMI Classics recording, Ingrid Fliter turns to three of the most passionate and powerful Beethoven sonatas with titles to match: Op. 13 `Pathétique', Op. 31 No. 2 `Tempest' and Op. 57 `Appassionata'. The iTunes bonus tracks are the Opus 33 Bagatelles Nos. 2, 6 and 7. Fliter said recently, "Through working on Beethoven's music I discovered the man, the humanity he expressed in his music. He took his life and music -and his mission- very seriously. He was an extremist. He did not give any concessions or compromises. He was not afraid of showing himself as he was and as such made many enemies as well as friends, lovers and admirers. I am among the latter." Reviewing a recent recital that included Beethoven's Sonata No. 18, Op 31 No. 3, Chicago Classical Review wrote, "Fliter brought not just a sterling technique but just the right sense of quirky humor and individuality to this music. Rarely will one hear the jocular side of Beethoven put across with such spirit, the dynamic contrasts underlined, and Fliter's light articulation bringing a vivacious Haydnesque wit to the music. [...] She also brought out the pensive side of the songful Menuetto and the rollicking Presto was aptly con fuoco making a rousing conclusion to a first-rate Beethoven performance." Fliter is associated in many people's minds with the music of Chopin. She was the Silver Medal winner of the Frédéric Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2000, since which time she has performed his music extensively and made two critically acclaimed Chopin recordings for EMI Classics. Comparing the music of Chopin and Beethoven, she said, "Playing Beethoven requires a totally different approach than playing Chopin. Chopin is more about him. You are the interpreter, you create the sound and people receive the beauty from you. But Beethoven is all about him wishing to communicate with the world. He wanted to catch the sky, catch nature and be part of it. He was all about giving. And this is something I want to create when I play. It's not about me, it's about the music, it's about Beethoven." Of the three Beethoven sonatas performed on this CD, only one was assigned its title by the composer. This was the `Grande sonate pathétique', composed in 1798 in Vienna and dedicated to Prince Karl Lichnowsky, a supporter who had introduced Beethoven to Viennese aristocracy. The sonata was composed at a time when Beethoven was becoming aware of his encroaching deafness. Although Beethoven did not name his sonata Op. 31 No. 2 `Tempest,' there are unconfirmed reports that he thought of Shakespeare's play in connection with the music. Beethoven's only sonata in the unusual key of D minor dates from 1802, a dark period in his life and the year of his Heiligenstadt Testament, a letter addressed to his brothers "to be read and executed after my death". In it, he described his despair over the progression of his deafness, his rejection of suicide and his decision to "endure this wretched existence" for the sake of his work. The name Appassionata affixed to Beethoven's Sonata Op. 57 was not chosen by the composer but is very apt as the work is passionate, dramatic and tempestuous. The title was chosen by the publisher in 1838, 11 years after the composer's death. The Appassionata was composed in 1804/1805 and possibly into 1806. It cost Beethoven a great deal of time and effort in the same period that he was composing the Eroica Symphony, the Kreutzer Sonata and the Leonora Overture No.2. Beethoven is said to have considered Op. 57 his greatest sonata until he composed the Hammerklavier in 1818. Ingrid Fliter began her studies in her native Buenos Aires before moving to Europe to continue them in France and Italy. She won prizes at important competitions, including the Busoni Co

Digitally remastered edition of this album from the songwriting legend. Mort Shuman's classic partnership with Doc Pomus produced some of the best known songs in history: "Surrender", "Viva Las Vegas", "Little Sister", "Kiss Me Quick" (Elvis Presley), "Save The Last Dance For Me", "Sweets For My Sweet", "This Magic Moment" (the Drifters), "A Teenager In Love" (Dion And The Belmonts), "Can't Get Used To Losing You" (Andy Williams), "Suspicion" (Terry Stafford), "Seven Day Weekend" (Gary "U.S." Bonds), "Spanish Lace" (Gene McDaniels) the list just goes on and on. In 1965 Shuman came to London, where he wrote many, many more hits. Next, he moved to Paris, writing for such gallic isons as Johnny Hallyday, performing his one man show, and discovering the work of Jacques Brel. During this time, he recorded this, the first of his solo albums....a deeply personal, adult, eccentric, theatrical and songwriting tour de force, wildly off kilter, standing with albums as disparate as Jim Dickinson's "Dixie Fried". Jim Webb's early solo albums, Peter Wyngarde's sole album, and the wilder shores of Serge Gainsbourgh's work...yet remaining a total pop classic! Rev-Ola. 2009.

Benedikt Koehlen was born in Speyer and received his training as a pianist with Elisabeth Moritz Conrad, Richard Laugs, Friedrich Wührer, and Geza Anda. He also studied conducting with Karl Mennerich, Kurt Eichhorn, and Jan Koetsier. He was awarded numerous distinctions in international competitions, like the Van Cliburn Competition and the Ferruccio Busoni Competition. Extensive concert appearances led to his appearance on international platforms from the very start of his career. His 1968 debut in Munich provoked enthusiastic reviews. He appeared repeatedly at major festivals, and as a soloist with orchestras and conductors of repute. A high point of the last season was Koehlen's performance of both volumes of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier on the 250th anniversary of Bach's death, during the Bach Night at the Munich Culture Centre am Gasteig. His first co-production (Karl Amadeus Hartmann/Leos Janáˇcek) reached the final list for the German Record Critics' Prize. Further releases of works by Stravinsky, Antheil, Satie, Artur Schnabel, and Hindemith (complete violin sonatas, with Ulf Hoelscher) followed. During his career to date, Koehlen has maintained longstanding chamber music partnerships with soloists like Ulf Hoelscher, Christoph Henkel, and Michael Schopper. Since the foundation of the Balance Trio in 1996, his activities in this area have seen further expansion.

Albany Records is proud to release what is a long-overdue memorial to one of the finest American composers of wind ensemble music. Chance was a gifted composer, teacher and administrator who died a tragic death by accidental electrocution at the age of 39. He studied theory and composition with Kent Kennan, Clifton Williams and Paul Pisk. If you are familiar with the “old school” of band music, Chance is as fine a representative as any. His music is brash, exciting, and highly energetic in the way you remember from those works you heard on those great old Mercury recordings with the late Frederick Fennell. Ironically, though such works as the Blue Lake Overture and Variations on a Korean Folk-Song have been in the active band repertory for years, this is the first major commercial release entirely devoted to his music, a “greatest hits” package in fact. Standing out in particular is the Symphony No. 2, perhaps the best work of its kind since the Persichetti Symphony (No. 6) for Band. Based on a four-note motif of C#-D-F-E, the music whips up a remarkable amount of tension and excitement, especially in the last movement. The authoritative performances are under Stephen K. Steele, who began directing the Band Department at Illinois State University in 1987. Under his direction, the Wind Symphony has performed for state and national conventions, including the 1990 American Bandmasters Association and the 1993 and 2001 College Band Directors National Association. Steele and the Wind Symphony can also be heard on two previous releases, TROY500 (music of Persichetti, Syler, Zaninelli and Maslanka) and TROY600 (music of Maslanka and Hagen). Albany has had great success with our catalog of wind music, and we feel this new release, honoring John Barnes Chance, is one of finest.

A monument in Mahler studies, this volume concentrates on the composer's vocal music and, in particular, on some of his most famous, most original and best loved compositions: the late Rueckert orchestral songs and Kindertotenlieder; Das Lied von der Erde, one of the composer's supreme masterpieces, and the vast Eighth Symphony. Much new ground is broken but the author bases his conclusions on a meticulous examination of the principal manuscript sources, especially those for Das Lied. He offers an unprecedented exploration of the original Chinese texts for that work and indeed of the whole Oriental dimension of Mahler's last and greatest song-cycle. Time and time again, the composer's sketches back up the author's reading of these massive scores and there will be few among this book's readers who will not find a familiar passage or movement sharply illuminated by fresh insights and information. The scope of the book, despite its concentration, is immensely wide; and so is the readership it addresses: Mahler scholars, performers, and general readers.
