Bridge s George Perle: Retrospective celebrates the music of one of America s greatest compositional voices with a two-disc set of pieces written between 1957 and 2004. Encompassing solo, chamber, choral and orchestral music, the album presents twelve compositions, including the premiere recordings of six of George Perle s pieces, and re-issues two major Perle recordings: the Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra; and the Serenade No. 3 for Piano and Chamber Orchestra. In addition to these major Perle masterpieces, the set includes rarities such as Perle s lovely arrangement of Two French Christmas Carols from 1958, and his last completed composition, Bassoonmusic of 2004. The recordings are performed by many of Perle s greatest champions, including Horacio Guttiérrez, Curtis Macomber, Michael Boriskin, Joseph Silverstein, Richard Goode, and Gerard Schwarz, and also includes a short work performed by the composer s wife, pianist Shirley Perle. Along with more than two-and-a-half hours of music, Bridge s George Perle: Retrospective includes a booklet with historic photographs of George Perle with many of the 20th century s leading musicians.

This comprehensive biography of George Gershwin (1898-1937) unravels the myths surrounding one of America's most celebrated composers and establishes the enduring value of his music. Gershwin created some of the most beloved music of the twentieth century and, along with Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter, helped make the golden age of Broadway golden. Howard Pollack draws from a wealth of sketches, manuscripts, letters, interviews, books, articles, recordings, films, and other materials--including a large cache of Gershwin scores discovered in a Warner Brothers warehouse in 1982--to create an expansive chronicle of Gershwin's meteoric rise to fame. He also traces Gershwin's powerful presence that, even today, extends from Broadway, jazz clubs, and film scores to symphony halls and opera houses.Pollack's lively narrative describes Gershwin's family, childhood, and education; his early career as a pianist; his friendships and romantic life; his relation to various musical trends; his writings on music; his working methods; and his tragic death at the age of 38. Unlike Kern, Berlin, and Porter, who mostly worked within the confines of Broadway and Hollywood, Gershwin actively sought to cross the boundaries between high and low, and wrote works that crossed over into a realm where art music, jazz, and Broadway met and merged. The author surveys Gershwin's entire oeuvre, from his first surviving compositions to the melodies that his brother and principal collaborator, Ira Gershwin, lyricized after his death. Pollack concludes with an exploration of the performances and critical reception of Gershwin's music over the years, from his time to ours.

The 2010-11 season sees Paavo Järvi assume his new role as Music Director of the Orchestre de Paris, taking over from Christoph Eschenbach, who spent 10 years with the orchestra, and following in the footsteps of figures such as Charles Munch, Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti and Daniel Barenboim. Marking the launch of this collaboration, Virgin Classics is releasing a program of orchestral works by Bizet, the first recording from this leading French orchestra and its Estonian-born conductor. To date, Järvi's Virgin Classics recordings have focused on music by Nordic and Russian composers, and - in his recent work with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra - Mahler and Brahms. Now, with the Orchestre de Paris, he presents a program by Bizet, a quintessentially French composer. The release comprises the vernal Symphony in C, written when Bizet was still a teenager, the delightful suite Jeux d'Enfants (Children's Games), and the composer's second symphony, Roma, a work he revised on a number of occasions, and which is rarely heard.

The 2005 studio recording of Bizet's Carmen, performed by the Radio France Orchestre Philharmonique with soloists Andrea Bocelli, Bryn Terfel, Marina Domashenko, and Myung-Whun Chung is here abridged from its original two-CD set into a single-disc set of highlights, the duets and arias most often recalled from the work. Domashenko is powerful in the title role, and Terfel's "Toreador's Song" as Escamillo is triumphant, but Bocelli earns his top billing as Don José. The recording is worth hearing in its entirety, though this disc compresses it into the "hit" numbers that are well-known. ~ William Ruhlmann

This book is the first full biography of George Szell, one of the greatest orchestra and opera conductors of the twentieth century. From child prodigy pianist and composer to world-renowned conductor, Szell's career spanned seven decades, and he led most of the great orchestras and opera companies of the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the NBC and Chicago Symphonies, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and Opera, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. A protégé of composer-conductor Richard Strauss at the Berlin State Opera, his crowning achievement was his twenty-four-year tenure as musical director of the Cleveland Orchestra, transforming it into one of the world's greatest ensembles, touring triumphantly in the United States, Europe, the Soviet Union, South Korea, and Japan. Michael Charry, a conductor who worked with Szell and interviewed him, his family, and his associates over several decades, draws on this first-hand material and correspondence, orchestra records, reviews, and other archival sources to construct a lively and balanced portrait of Szell's life and work from his birth in 1897 in Budapest to his death in 1970 in Cleveland. Readers will follow Szell from his career in Europe, Great Britain, and Australia to his guest conducting at the New York Philharmonic and his distinguished tenure at the Metropolitan Opera and Cleveland Orchestra. Charry details Szell's personal and musical qualities, his recordings and broadcast concerts, his approach to the great works of the orchestral repertoire, and his famous orchestrational changes and interpretation of the symphonies of Robert Schumann. The book also lists Szell's conducting repertoire and includes a comprehensive discography. In highlighting Szell's legacy as a teacher and mentor as well as his contributions to orchestral and opera history, this biography will be of lasting interest to concert-goers, music lovers, conductors, musicians inspired by Szell's many great performances, and new generations who will come to know those performances through Szell's recorded legacy.

The Romanian composer George Enescu (881-1955) is one of the neglected giants of the twentieth century. Prodigiously gifted, he became best known in America as a conductor (where he was considered as a successor to Toscanini in New York) and in Europe as one of the greatest violinists of the century. But he was first and foremost a composer; and, tragically, his mature works - works of extraordinary emotional depth and intricate beauty - remain almost unknown outside Romania. This, the first full-length study of Enescu and his music to be written in the West, tells the story of his life and development as a composer. All of Enescu's published compositions, and many unpublished works, are discussed, and there is a detailed list of Enescu's compositions and a list of all his known recordings as conductor, violinist and pianist. The book is intended for the non-specialist reader as well as the musicologist.

The 100th birthdays of George and Ira Gershwin (in 1898 and 1896, respectively) are being celebrated around the world. The centennials are the perfect occasion to reflect on the brothers' rich legacy to American theater music. "The Man I Love," "Fascinating Rhythm," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "A Foggy Day"--together they wrote 700 songs and dozens of shows that defined an age and revolutionized the musical theater. Essential to any consideration of their achievement is Deena Rosenberg's Fascinating Rhythm, the only book to closely examine the brothers'extraordinary collaboration.First published in 1991, this pioneering work--which grew out of extensive interviews with Ira Gershwin and draws on much unpublished material from his archives--provides an interpretation and critical history of the Gershwin opus. Focusing on the major songs and shows and on the creative process that produced them, Rosenberg traces the development of the Gershwins' vocabulary, voice, subject, and viewpoint as they evolved from song to song. She illuminates how words and music work together in each song to create a small one-act play that encompasses a satisfying emotional and dramatic action.Rosenberg also expertly places the Gershwins in their creative and social context, highlighting their innovations, their own growth as mature artists, and their relationship to their times. And she outlines Ira's productive career following the untimely death of his brother in 1937.Filled with musical examples, Iyrics, and photographs, this rich portrait will fascinate any musical theater lover."Packed with terrific insights that will delight those who care about this music." --New York Times Book ReviewDeena Rosenberg is the founding chair of the Musical Theatre Program, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. A cultural and music historian, she is coauthor of The Music Makers and has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, High Fidelity, and other publications.

In all of classical music, George Frederic Handel's 1741 devotional masterpiece "Messiah", an oratorio based entirely on Biblical texts, stands as one of the great, enduring works taking as its theme the birth of the Savior. Profoundly impressed by the intensely devotional character and expressive beauty of the texts, Handel composed all of the "Messiah" in a concentrated burst of inspired creativity, working ceaselessly for 24 days, hardly eating or sleeping, and producing, in the words of Sir Malcolm Sargent, conductor of this stirring performance, "an oratorio of incomparable grandeur and ineffable beauty which to this day brings glimpses of Heaven and the Peace of God" to all who hear it. Of the widely familiar "Hallelujah Chorus" the story is told that when King George II attended the first London performance, he was so overcome by its grandeur that he rose to his feet and remained standing to its conclusion, giving rise to the custom, still frequently observed, of audience's rising while it is sung. Handel himself said when he wrote this great, moving chorus, "I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the Great God Himself." Two centuries and more after its creation, the "Messiah" remains one of the inspired, and inspiring masterworks of all music of the Nativity. Track listing: 1. Recitative: Comfort Ye (Richard Lewis, tenor) 2. Air: Ev'ry Valley Shall Be Exalted (Richard Lewis, tenor) 3. Chorus: And The Glory Of The Lord Shall Be Revealed 4. Chorus: For Unto Us A Child Is Born 5. Recitative: Then Shall The Eyes (Marjorie Thomas, contralto) 6. Air: He Shall Feed His Flock (Marjorie Thomas, contralto) 7. Air: Come Unto Him (Elsie Morison, soprano) 8. Chorus: Behold The Lamb of God 9. Air: He Was Despised (Marjorie Thomas, contralto) 10. Chorus: Hallelujah! 11. ... Read more
Even as orchestras, performers, enthusiasts, and critics across the nation--and across the globe--celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of his birth, George Gershwin (1898-1937) remains one of America's most popular yet least appreciated composers. True, he is loved and revered for his wonderful popular songs, a few instrumental works, and the majestic opera Porgy and Bess. But most of his music is virtually unknown; hundreds of compositions, Broadway show tunes, and even several large and important instrumental works are gradually disappearing with the generations that first heard them. The Gershwin Style: New Looks at the Music of George Gershwin is a bold new work that stands in opposition to this disappearance. It is also a fresh collection of essays that promises to make a key contribution to American music research. Editor Wayne Schneider has corralled some of the leading authorities of Gershwin's efforts--renowned experts and authors who have researched his music for years if not decades--and sets their work alongside articles by scholars who come to Gershwin for the first time from backgrounds in American music or popular music in general. The notable contributors include Wayne D. Shirley, Charles Hamm, Edward Jablonski, and Artis Wodehouse (who has transcribed nearly all of Gershwin's piano performances). No one who surveys the American musical landscape can doubt Gershwin's enduring popularity or profound influence, but his critical standing among today's serious music scholars is much less certain. As Schneider points out in his Introduction, there have been many biographies of Gershwin but comparatively few studies of his music in and of itself. Covering both the "popular" and "classical" extremes of Gershwin's output, as well as the many and subtle points in between, this book reevaluates the music of an American original from several enlightening perspectives. This is a book with much to offer any student or scholar of American music--while some essays explore new methods of measuring Gershwin's abilities as a composer, others draw on hitherto unavailable musical and archival sources to make arguments previously unthinkable. The essays gathered here, most of which were written especially for this volume, thus address a number of important research topics, among them biography, source studies, music analysis, performance practice, and questions of interpretation and reception. The contributions also reflect the wide diversity of contemporary thinking regarding the logic, legacy, and lure of Gershwin's music.

In this welcome addition to the immensely popular Yale Broadway Masters series, Larry Starr focuses fresh attention on George Gershwin’s Broadway contributions and examines their centrality to the composer’s entire career. Starr presents Gershwin as a composer with a unified musical vision—a vision developed on Broadway and used as a source of strength in his well-known concert music. In turn, Gershwin’s concert-hall experience enriched and strengthened his musicals, leading eventually to his great “Broadway opera,” Porgy and Bess. Through the prism of three major shows—Lady Be Good (1924), Of Thee I Sing (1931), and Porgy and Bess (1935)—Starr highlights Gershwin’s distinctive contributions to the evolution of the Broadway musical. ... Read more
George Edwards graduated from Oberlin and then did graduate study at Princeton, where he studied with Milton Babbitt, Earl Kim and Edward T. Cone. He taught at the New England Conservatory and then moved to Columbia University in 1977 where he taught composition and theory until 2004 when he retired. George Edwards' longtime friend and colleague, the composer and theorist Fred Lerdahl, identifies three basic strands in Edwards' music. First, it is relentlessly contrapuntal. Second, Lerdahl notes that while the music is not truly serial, the works of twelve-tone composers have had a profound effect. Finally, the music shows a strong affinity for the lyrical intensity and harmonic richness of the late Romantic Austro-German repertoire. These three strands coalesce in important ways to form the essence of George Edwards' unique compositional voice. With the release of this recording, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to engage with a composer of the first order.
