About this release Whether you agree with the guitarist Andrés SegovÃa, who remarked that 'the piano is a monster that screams when you touch its teeth', or with the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, for whom the piano was 'a little orchestra in itself', never has so comprehensive a sound-history of the instrument been assembled in a single, commercial set as this new Piano 100 box from Brilliant Classics. Opening with the godfather of the keyboard sonata, Domenico Scarlatti, and closing with one of the great devotional masterpieces of the last century, Messiaen's Vingt Regards, Piano 100 takes in, along the way, the complete sonatas of Mozart, Beethoven and Scriabin, the complete solo-piano music of Chopin, Debussy and Ravel, warhorses like Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, masterpieces of the miniature by Grieg and Janácek, conservative studies by Czerny and wacky journeys into the instrument's far reaches with Cage. All of pianistic life is here, and among your guides are some of the great names to have touched the keyboard in the recording era: Alfred Brendel, Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. Further information - Full booklet notes included on a bonus CD-ROM Piano scores in PDF format for the majority of music on the disc on a bonus DVD-ROM specially compiled for this issue by CDSheetmusic.com

Beethoven's piano sonatas form one of the most important co
... Read more
Beethoven's piano sonatas form one of the most important collections of works in the whole history of music. Spanning several decades of his life as a composer, the sonatas soon came to be seen as the first body of substantial serious pieces for piano suited to performance in large concert halls seating hundreds of people. In this comprehensive and authoritative guide, Charles Rosen places the works in context and provides an understanding of the formal principles involved in interpreting and performing this unique repertoire, covering such aspects as sonata form, phrasing, and tempo, as well as the use of pedal and trills. In the second part of his book, he looks at the sonatas individually, from the earliest works of the 1970s through the sonatas of Beethoven's youthful popularity of the early 1800s, the subsequent years of mastery, the years of stress (1812-1817), and the last three sonatas of the 1820s. Composed as much for private music-making as public recital, Beethoven's sonatas have long formed a bridge between the worlds of the salon and the concert hall. For today's audience, Charles Rosen has written a guide that brings out the gravity, passion, and humour of these works and will enrich the appreciation of a wide range of readers, whether listeners, amateur musicians or professional pianists. This book includes a free CD of Rosen performing extracts from several of the sonatas, illustrating points made in the text.

This book is based on detailed notes taken by the author during a decade of study under one of the renowned teachers of piano, whose pupils included such pianists as Gary Graffman, Lilian Kallir, Jacob Lateiner, and Sylvia Saremba and such composer/conductors as Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Lukas Foss, and Thomas Scherman. Following a brief chapter on Vengerova's personality, the author presents the Vengerova system in respect to posture and hand position, accents, "singing tone," fingering, and pedaling. A final chapter discusses the merits of a relatively rigid system of musical instruction, concluding that Vengerova's approach encouraged 'variety with an underlying unity'- a conclusion supported in a survey of her former pupils by Joseph Rezits. The book is illustrated with photographs and excerpts from musical scores. An appendix includes an article by the Soviet musicologist Vitaly Neumann on Isabelle Vengerova's teaching at the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1906 until the Revolution, following a concert career. It also includes an obituary by Jay S. Harrison outlining her teaching accomplishments at the Curtis Institute and the Mannes College of Music between 1924 and her death in 1956.

Like the symphonies of Beethoven, Mozart's piano concertos
... Read more
Like the symphonies of Beethoven, Mozart's piano concertos constitute an extraordinary body of work that will never disappear from our culture. Yet despite widespread recognition of their importance, they still present many interpretive problems. In 1989, the Michigan MozartFest brought expert performers, instrument makers, critics, music theorists, and musicologists together for the first symposium devoted exclusively to Mozart's piano concertos. The twenty-one essays in Mozart's Piano Concertos, culled from that event, richly broaden our understanding of this corpus. The volume's first section consists of commentaries on the texts of the concertos, including thoughts on creating a critical edition. In subsequent sections, contributors analyze the structure of the pieces and the circumstances in which they were first composed and performed. How do these works compare with other concertos of the period? Where were Mozart's contributions truly original, where conventional? What musical references did he expect his listeners to catch?Generously illustrated with facsimiles, tables, and more than one-hundred musical examples, Mozart's Piano Concertos substantially advances our understanding of these wonderful works. Its exceptional scope--addressing everything from textual problems (what notes should be played?) to performance practice (how can we make the music sound more nearly as Mozart heard it?)--will make it invaluable to anyone who loves his piano concertos.Contributors:V. Kofi Agawu, Wye Jameson Allanbrook, Eva Badura-Skoda, Karol Berger, Richard Crawford, Ellwood Derr, Dexter Edge, Cliff Eisen, Martha Feldman, David Grayson, William Kinderman, Robert D. Levin, Janet M. Levy, David Rosen, Carl Schachter, Elaine Sisman, Jane R. Stevens, Alan Tyson, James Webster, Christoph Wolff, and Neal Zaslaw.Neal Zaslaw is Professor of Music, Cornell University.

Premiere recording of all the Roman Maciejewski mazurkas for piano on a double album, performed by Anna Brozek. The Polish-American pianist, organist, choral conductor, and composer, Roman Maciejewski, was born of Polish parents in Berlin. His mother taught him to play piano at the age of 5. from 1916 to 1919 he studied at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin with S. Goldenweiser. He then studied with Zeleski at the State Conservatory in Poznan, from which he received his diploma as a concert pianist in 1922. He also studied composition with Wiechowicz in Poznan. While still a very young man, he was director of the largest choir in Poznan (S. Moniuszko Choir). In 1932 he entered the Academy of Music in Warsaw, where he studied with Szymanowski and Sikorski, but left without completing his studies to embark on a tour of the Balkan states with recitals of his own piano compositions. He went to Paris in 1934, and studied with Nadia Boulanger. At a performance of his concerto for two pianos in London Roman Maciejewski met Kurt Joos who then commissioned music for two ballets. In 1939 Maciejewski began his first "Swedish" period - he married a Swedish dancer and lived in Sweden for 12 years, active as a composer and pianist. He composed music for several theater productions of Ingmar Bergman, including Camus's Kaligula. While in Sweden, he began his life-work, the Missa pro defunctis - Requiem, which he finished fifteen years later. This monumental piece is dedicated to all the victims of all wars and remains Maciejewski's best known and highest-regarded composition. After World War II, in 1951 (or 1952), he moved from Sweden to the USA and spent a period of 26 years in California, living in Redondo Beach, working as the organist for two Catholic churches, and directing the "Roman Choir". During his American years, Maciejewski composed a number of choral pieces and masses. In 1977 he moved back to Sweden, settling in Gotteborg where he died in 1998.

Enrique Granados (1867-1916) is one of the most compelling figures of the late-Romantic period in music. During his return voyage to Spain after the premiere of his opera Goyescas at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1916, a German submarine torpedoed the ship on which he and his wife were sailing, and they perished in the waters of the English Channel. His death was mourned on both sides of the Atlantic as a stunning loss to the music world, for he had died at the pinnacle of his career, and his late works held the promise of greater things to come.Granados was among the leading pianists of his time, and his eloquence at the keyboard inspired critics to dub him the "poet of the piano." In Enrique Granados: Poet of the Piano, Walter Aaron Clark offers the first substantive study in English of this virtuoso pianist, composer, and music pedagogue. While providing detailed analyses of his major works for voice, piano, and the stage, Clark argues that Granados's art represented a unifying presence on the cultural landscape of Spain during a period of imperial decline, political unrest, and economic transformation. Drawing on newly discovered documents, Clark explores the cultural spheres in which Granados moved, particularly of Castile and Catalonia. Granados's best-known music was inspired by the art of Francisco Goya, especially the Goyescas suite for solo piano that became the basis for the opera. These pieces evoked the colorful and dramatic world that Goya inhabited and depicted in his art. Granados's fascination with Goya's Madrid set him apart from fellow nationalists Albniz and Falla, who drew their principal inspiration from Andalusia. Though he was resolutely apolitical, Granados's attraction to Castile antagonized some Catalan nationalists, who resented Castilian domination. Yet Granados also made important contributions to Catalan musical theater and was a prominent figure in the modernist movement in Barcelona.Clark also explores the personal pressures that shaped Granados's music. His passionate affair with a wealthy socialite created domestic tensions, but it was also a source of inspiration for Goyescas. Persistent financial difficulties forced him to devote time to teaching at the expense of composition, though as a result Granados made considerable contributions to piano pedagogy and music education in Barcelona through the music academy he founded there. While Granados's tragic and early demise casts a pall over his life story, Clark ultimately reveals an artist of remarkable versatility and individuality and sheds new light on his enduring significance.
