About a century ago, Dean John Wigmore, Northwestern University School of Law, hypothesized that if "there is ever devised a psychological test for the valuation of witnesses, the law will run to meet it." But his prophesy has yet to prove itself. In fact, it often seems that the law has been running away from the polygraph. In his new book, Ken Blackstone explains that this has less to do with the validity of the polygraph and more to do with the lack of a bright line between forensic and utility polygraph. Polygraph, Sex Offenders, and the Court: • Provides a history of civil commitment in the United States of America • Describes the psychological and physiological fundamentals of polygraph testing • Explains the complexity of the polygraph protocol • Establishes standards for professionals to expect in polygraph testing

Understanding Child Abuse is the first book to look at women whose partners are child sex offenders. Much of the book is devoted to the voices of the women themselves, telling their stories and how they feel about the situations in which they found themselves, how they coped, and how they remade their lives and those of their families. They describe what they learned from their experience and how it changed them. Such experience is largely overlooked by researchers, agencies and policy makers and this book throws unique light on this neglected area. The chapters cover: What we know about child sexual abuse, offenders and the effect of sexual abuse on children. A detailed description of the work which allows the women to explore and compare their experiences and feelings about what has happened. Verbatim interviews with both partners and offenders. Combining theory, practice and personal testimony in a concise and accessible manner, Understanding Child Abuse is essential reading for social work practitioners and students as well as probation officers and anyone involved with child protection. It will also be of interest to members of the public.

Learn to work effectively with sexual criminals! How to Work with Sex Offenders is the first complete manual available on the subject for professionals who deal with this very difficult population. This user-friendly, comprehensive resource presents new data that will give you techniques for effectively interviewing sex offenders and outlines innovative treatment options in an understandable way, but that is just part of what makes this book unique. How to Work with Sex Offenders walks you through the criminal justice, human services, and mental health systems as applied to sex offenders from start to finish -- you'll learn what happens to the offender from the point when he/she is apprehended, through prosecution, adjudication, and treatment. From the Preface, by Rudy Flora: “Sexual offending impacts both victim and offender. The clinical harm experienced by a victim is significant and recovery is long-termed. Offenders, too, are often trapped in the tragedy of their deviance. Sex offenders are extremely skillful at avoiding detection, and will use any 'system confusion’displayed by providers to their advantage. [With this book] the reader will be exposed, in a step-by-step format, to how the criminal justice, human service, and mental health systems function.”How to Work With Sex Offenders: A Handbook for Criminal Justice, Human Service, and Mental Health Professionals examines: how the current system works, from start to finish the roles of child protective services workers, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, physicians/hospital staff, district attorneys, defense lawyers, judges, mental health professionals, foster families, probation officers, correctional officers, parole officers, and social services providers individual, family, and group therapy models basic universal concepts regarding identification of sex offenders profiles of exhibitionists, frotteurs, voyeurs, pedophiles, rapists, sexual sadists and paraphiliacs what to expect when called as an expert witness at a sex offender's trial sexual assault as a clinical disorder suggested treatment formats for sex offenders in an outpatient setting, inpatient psychiatric hospital, or correctional facility the costs of incarceration as well as inpatient and outpatient costs the difficulties of parole and probational supervision for sex offenders presentencing reports and interviewing strategies and much moreMany sex offenders were early victims themselves. Incarceration alone will not alleviate the problem; other methods to prevent repeat offences are needed. Those who encounter these offenders require certain skills in order to properly protect the public and the victim as well as helping the offenders themselves. How to Work with Sex Offenders is the resource you need to handle this extraordinarily difficult and vitally important task.

The Labeling of Sex Offenders contributes to the research o
... Read more
The Labeling of Sex Offenders contributes to the research on the effects of sex offender registration and notification policies using the labeling perspective. The labeling perspective asserts that offenders who are labeled are more likely to re-offend; this is counter to sex offender registration policies, which assume that knowing the identity and whereabouts of sex offenders is imperative to the public's ability to protect itself. This research used criminal data from the State of Arkansas within the framework of a quasi-experimental design to evaluate the recidivism of the first three waves of sex offenders registered (1997-1999) vs. a comparison group of sex offenders from a decade earlier (1978-1989). Key variables used to explain specific and general recidivism included the application of an active label, prior exposure to formal and informal labels, the intensity of the label, race, sex, and age. The findings presented by Madden indicate that there is no statistically significant difference between the two groups of sex offenders in terms of recidivism.
