The first name in music instrument gaming returns with a Rock Band-esque focus on full band simulation, the ability for players to create their own music, and more than 80 new tracks in Guitar Hero: World Tour. For the first time in the series, wannabe rock stars can simulate singing and drumming in addition to the familiar strumming of guitar-shaped controllers, and with the addition of a bass guitar, up to four players can form a band and jam together. As with all titles in the Guitar Hero series, gamers must "play" their instruments by rhythmically matching onscreen prompts in order to earn high scores and unlock new songs. The singing mechanic resembles Karaoke Revolution and SingStar in that it requires vocalists to match the pitch and notes of each song, whereas drummers must be timely when depressing the kick drum and striking the proper combination of drum and cymbal pads. A revamped single-player Career mode lets gamers advance their musician through a series of gigs by playing a specific number of songs, with the option to change difficulty level or instrument at any time. The Band Career mode works in a similar fashion, offering up to four players the opportunity to advance through a full career. Boss Battles also return in a form more akin to previous Face-Off modes, and they no longer feature the attack power-ups used in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Gamers can use the new "Create-a-Rocker" feature to customize the posture, age, hair, makeup, and tattoos of their unique characters, and real-life rock legends such as Ozzy Osbourne, Jim Hendrix, and Ted Nugent are also playable. The song list spans several decades and is made up of a diverse selection of master recordings by artists such as: 311, the Allman Brothers Band, the Beastie Boys, Billy Idol, Blondie, Coldplay, the Cult, the Doors, the Eagles, the Foo Fighters, Jane's Addiction, Jimi Hendrix, Korn, Linkin Park, Los Lobos, Metallica, Michael Jackson, Modest Mouse, Motorhead, Nirvana, No Doubt, NOFX, Oasis, Ozzy Osbourne, Pat Benetar, R.E.M, the Sex Pistols, Steely Dan, Sting, the Stone Roses, Sublime, Tool, Van Halen, and Willie Nelson. In addition, players can create their own songs in the Advanced Studio mode by playing tracks for each instrument in either real or slowed time. Songs can be either 1,200 notes long or three minutes in length, but vocal recording is unavailable due to storage issues.

Inspired by the courage demonstrated and devastation sustained in the warfare of the 20th century, Killzone makes its debut as a PS2 exclusive, bringing with it an assortment of features. The game offers four playable characters and 27 different weapons. Players will engage the enemy in more than 11 detailed environments, designed to showcase the grueling settings of a war-ridden planet. There are several gameplay modes to chose from, including single-player and multiplayer (team-based and competitive), as well as online play for up to 12 players. Killzone immerses players in a future of space colonization that has resulted in several planets becoming inhabited by humans. While most of the colonies united to form the ISA, a ruthless, militaristic faction known as the Helghast has secretly separated itself, and is preparing to wage all-out war. On a nearby colony known as Vecta, the city's orbital defense mysteriously goes offline, allowing the Helghast to land and deploy their troops. As a member of an elite ISA military force, the player's objective is to escort a high-ranking official to an evacuation point while avoiding an intelligent computer-controlled enemy, able to calculate threats, maintain military direction, and execute self-preservation tactics.

From the makers of the Dreamcast action title Soul Fighter comes Hidden Invasion, a 3D beat-em-up set in the year 2027. The story follows two members of the Shadowforce division of the National Security Special Operations agency, assigned to what should be little more than a routine mission. It soon becomes obvious that it's anything but, and the duo eventually uncover an alien conspiracy the outcome of which will determine the fate of the human race. Gameplay is patterned after Toka's Dreamcast effort, in that players select a character (either a male or female pugilist) and must fight their way through a series of enemy-laden environments using the handful of melee attacks available to them. Offering brief respite from the constant hand-to-hand combat are the projectile weapons that can be found in each level. In addition to having to defeat every enemy found within a given area, players will need to complete basic objectives before the allotted time runs out. Objectives come in the form of "fetch" quests that require the acquisition of keys or the disarming of bombs. To help players seek out the current objective, an onscreen arrow is provided to point towards the task at hand. Unlike its predecessor, Hidden Invasion supports simultaneous cooperative two-player action.

A focus on classic orchestral tunes immediately sets Mad Ma
... Read more
A focus on classic orchestral tunes immediately sets Mad Maestro apart from its more contemporary brethren. A rhythm music title, Mad Maestro allows players to assume the role of a conductor whose job it is to "manage" the music, instead of actually playing it. The three aspects of each piece, namely, the transitions between sections of the piece, the volume and the tempo are controlled by the D-pad, the pressure applied to a particular button, and the timing of button presses, respectively. Depending on the particular piece of music, up to five points can be displayed onscreen at once. A constantly moving cursor provides cues, informing the player when to press the button. The color of the point currently highlighted by the cursor changes from blue to green to red, indicating the amount of pressure to be applied to each button press. The distance between points changes based upon the tempo of the current piece of music, with slower pieces giving rise to greater distances and faster sections punctuated by shorter distances. Players will also be required to press a button as well as a direction on the D-pad at certain points in the piece. A horizontal meter fills up with each correct input; filling up the entire meter will initiate "angel mode." Only by being in this mode when the song ends can you successfully complete the stage. Make too many mistakes however, and a "devil mode" will ensue, during which time the meter does not fill up. Not making a mistake for after a brief period will return the game to "angel mode." The goal of this incessant orchestration is to drum up support by aiding the local townspeople, with the ultimate goal of saving the local concert hall a story told between chapters through the use of CG cut-scenes. During each stage the backgrounds change dynamically in accordance with your performance: perform well and the screen will be filled with frenzied action, lights, and objects, do poorly however and the stage will begin to darken and eventually fall apart. A performance-based ranking is provided at the end of each stage allowing players to gauge their conducting prowess. A Free Play mode lets you play through any beaten stage; a Replay mode allows you to view past performances; A Music room lets you listen to unlocked pieces, and ten unlockable bonus games round out the selection of gameplay choices. A total of 35 songs are included within the game, many of which must be unlocked.
