SuperCross Circuit is packed with pros. This game lets you race supercross all-stars Larry Ward, Mike LaRocco, John Dowd, and Tim Ferry on licensed dirt bikes from Honda, Yamaha, KTM, and Kawasaki. As if that was not official enough for die-hard dirt bikers, there are realistic racetracks to conquer, including Sam Boyd Stadium, Red Bud, and Glen One. The game designers paid particular attention to recreating rugged track and bike conditions that muddy up (literally) an otherwise clean racing experience. For example, your bike must avoid puddles that haven't quite dried up. Expect to get dirty; during our test of this game, we found it to be nearly impossible to avoid getting our virtual bikes caked with mud. Two players can face off in a single race or, if you prefer, you can race for a whole season to accumulate titles and cash prizes for bike upgrades. If you conquer the realistic tracks contained in the game, you can design 20 monster tracks with the track editor. From the creators of the popular racing series Gran Turismo comes the space-action sci-fi shooter Omega Boost. This futuristic game pits you against a sinister computer virus named Alphacore. To conquer Alphacore, you must pilot an armed free-floating robot named Omega Boost through 19 diverse zones and, ultimately, travel back in time to stop Alphacore from changing history. Basically, the gameplay of Omega Boost is incredibly straightforward. Simply blow up each enemy that stands in your way. Enemies come in all shapes, sizes, and strengths. We were impressed with the amount of detail put into each enemy--in fact, we often paused the game so that we could better examine each enemy being blown to smithereens. Each zone has a collection of small enemies, a sub- boss, and a boss to conquer. As you progress in the game, you can customize and upgrade your equipment. In champion mode, you will have to finish a level with a good enough destroy rate before you will be allowed to advance. This game also includes a replay mode, which will allow you to leisurely view highlights of your most intense battles. While this game may be pretty to look at, the controls can be difficult to master. You'll definitely need to check out the training zones in order to properly learn how to navigate your hunk of junk metal. As part of a new brand, ESPN NHL Hockey follows a similar format as the rest of Sega's sports lineup for 2003, emphasizing the ESPN style of presentation to make players feel like they are watching a televised game. The visuals and audio feature the same music cues, overlays, box scores, and other distinctive elements that help set ESPN apart from other networks' sports coverage. A new graphic engine allows for more detailed player models and faces as well as redesigned arenas and uniforms. Strategy-oriented fans will be able to pin athletes against the boards to slow the game down, wear opponents out, or tie up the puck long enough for the referee to blow the whistle. Special attention was paid to improving the checking animations on the open ice, against the boards, and even over the boards if a player has built enough momentum before the hit. Management decisions take place within a 3D front office, where would-be owners can build a team by wheeling and dealing for star players, scouting the minors for a diamond in the rough, and by cutting loose overpaid or unproductive veterans.
