Bone and Osteoarthritis places emphasis on the molecular and cellular events that lead to osteoarthritis, stressing the role of subchondral bone, which distinguishes this from other books on the disease. A novel aspect is the attention given to the possible epigenetic basis, together with a discussion of the genetics predisposing to osteoarthritis. Detailed analyses are given of the role of the synovium, of the molecular mechanisms that lead to degradation of the cartilage matrix, of the hypertrophy of the cartilage cell, of the anabolic and catabolic roles of cytokines, may lead to novel approaches to clinical treatment, utilizing anabolic mediators or molecules that target steps in the disease process. Also discussed are animal models and how mechano-responsiveness is compromised by mechanical injury. Orthopedics and rheumatology have become close conceptually, as advances in bone and joint biology have enabled bench and translational scientists, as well as practitioners, to approach clinical problems comprehensively. Because bone plays a role in initiating osteoarthritis, therapeutic approaches focusing on bone tissue are included in the discussion of novel treatments. The general topic of osteoarthritis is therefore a timely subject for a series on bone biology. This book, intended for clinicians, researchers and students, provides information that will orient the novice and update the specialist. No other book treats the relationship of bone to osteoarthritis in similar fashion or provides a comparable underpinning of joint pathophysiology.

Osteoarthritis affects over 20 million Americans and is the most common degenerative disorder in the United States. It causes more disability than any other degenerative disease and is occurring in epidemic proportions throughout the world. In this novel approach to understanding and treating osteoarthritis, orthopaedic surgeon Peter Bales highlights the nutritional connection to this painful and debilitating condition, Dr Bales focuses on new genetic research, which shows that the same poor nutrition responsible for causing increased inflammation in our bodies, along with epidemic rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, is also fuelling the development of osteoarthritis. Among the topics discussed are the following: the mechanisms by which our joints become destroyed. The culprits are increased inflammation, increased oxygen free radicals causing our joints to 'rust' from chronically elevated blood sugar levels and hormone imbalance. Dietary strategies to decrease the production of oxygen free radicals, and to turn off genes that lead to cartilage breakdown. Joint nutrients that can combat osteoarthritis and specific dietary recommendations for the treatment and reversal of osteoarthritis based on the more current genetic and nutritional research. The disadvantages of treating osteoarthritis with drugs and the exciting promise of using nutritional intervention that directly affects the expression of our genes. The only book to emphasise the link between poor nutrition and osteoarthritis, this important new approach to an often disabling disease offers hope for arthritis sufferers and will be of interest to anyone concerned about good health.

At a time when prevalence of osteoarthritis (failure of the joint) is increasing with an aging population it is timely to review the latest evidence and management strategies for optimal treatment of patients with this, the most common joint disease of mankind. A number of exciting new developments related to etiopathogesis and management make it highly desirable at this time to publish a fully comprehensive authoritative discussion of the risk factors, mechanisms of joint damage, clinical aspects, differential diagnosis and treatment of OA. A review of the current understanding of the management of this disorder and of the basic mechanisms involved provides the rationale for publication of this new fully-updated edition. The book looks at the mechanisms for joint failure and how this may be due to abnormal cartilage or disease in underlying tissue. Significant coverage is given to exciting new evidence on disease-modifying drugs and methodologies for their outcomes evaluation. It is becoming increasingly reconised that optimal management of osteoarthritis requires a comprehensive program involving drugs and nonmedical components and, in some cases, surgery. Chapters on both non-surgical and surgical therapy are contained in the management section. The full coverage given in this book allows the physician to consider and choose the right blend of treatment for each patient from the range available whether physical, pharmacologic, surgical or supportive. The book is sympathetic to the significant differences that often exist between the perception of the patient and that of the physician regardign what's important in treatment and coverage is therefore given to the outcome measures needed for optimal evaluation of both. Highly illustrated in full colour throughout this definitive text is written principally for the clinical rheumatologists, although primary care physicians, orthopaedic surgeons, allied health professionals, basic researchers, members of the pharmaceutical industry who are involved in drug research and development, and regulatory staff should also find it useful.

Osteoarthritis is a common disorder of the joints that affects more than 2 million people in the UK, and studies suggest that this number will double in the next 20 years. The condition is strongly associated with ageing and is believed to affect up to 30% of people over 60 years of age. There are a number of misconceptions surrounding osteoarthritis and this, combined with the lack of effective drug treatments, often leaves patients dispirited and confused about their condition. Osteoarthritis: The Facts helps patients and their carers better understand their condition with a view towards self-management. The text is designed to be easy to read and is organized into two main parts. Part 1 details what osteoarthritis is, what causes it, who it affects, what the main symptoms are, how it is diagnosed and what the long-term outcome is. Part 2 summarises the current management of osteoarthritis, including the role of exercise, diet, medication, "nutriceuticals", alternative therapies, and surgery. The book also includes a useful resources section, including information on support groups, websites, and further reading.

As we age, some of us start feeling pain in our joints. The pain may stem simply from age; or it may be a result of conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. However, young people can suffer from these problems too, or they may experience joint pain as a result of over working or working out too hard. Regardless of the cause, many people are looking for a way to ease their joint pain. Introducing Joint Ultra will help relieve your joint pain and improve your joint health! Joints are such an important part of our bodies and how we function; our joints allow us to move! Joints are areas where bones meet, like at the hip, knee and shoulder. Joint pain is a result of discomfort or soreness in the joints, and may be felt while moving or remaining still. Joints are made up of cartilage, tendons, ligaments as well as bursas, which are fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joint, and the synovial fluid. The synovial fluid is the lining of the joint and creates the lubrication for the joint. Joint pain can be caused by a mild ligament or muscle sprain or a dislocation. However it can also be the sign of a more serious condition, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, leukemia or bone cancer. For the most part, our bodies provide the foundations we need to maintain our bodies joint health, however if you suffer from joint pain or want to boost your joint health then you need Joint Ultra!

Designed to be a practical handbook on clinical trial management in these key therapeutic areas, 'Clinical Trials in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis' is aimed at principal investigators pharmaceutical physicians and other pharmaceutical staff involved in the design, conduct and monitoring of these increasingly complex diseases. In the last several years a new classes of biologic agents have emerged and changed the treatment paradigm for patients, not only with classically defined rheumatoid arthritis, but also with other related diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis. Furthermore, osteoarthritis is a major disease state that is often treated by the rheumatologist, but is one where patient management programs are currently limited with a need for new therapeutic approaches. In both inflammatory and non-inflammatory arthritic conditions, clinical trials have become both large and complex due to the nature of the diseases, with ever-challenging new surrogate end-points being employed. Topics covered in this title will therefore include study design, clinical endpoints, technical issues, data collection, use of centralized medical image reading facilities and biochemical marker laboratories, as well as data analysis and future therapies. This book takes the user through the process step-by-step from start to finish, also providing a background on the regulatory guidelines, ethical implications, endpoints, and current therapies.

Glucosamine Sulfate 3 Pack Combo with a free bottle of Ultr
... Read more
Glucosamine Sulfate 3 Pack Combo with a free bottle of Ultra Omega 369 There have been multiple clinical trials of glucosamine as a medical therapy for osteoarthritis, but results have been conflicting. The evidence both for and against glucosamine's efficacy has led to debate among physicians about whether to recommend glucosamine treatment to their patients.Multiple clinical trials in the 1980s and 1990s, all sponsored by the European patent-holder, Rottapharm, demonstrated a benefit for glucosamine. However, these studies were of poor quality due to shortcomings in their methods, including small size, short duration, poor analysis of drop-outs, and unclear procedures for blinding. Rottapharm then sponsored two large (at least 100 patients per group), three-year-long, placebo-controlled clinical trials of the Rottapharm brand of glucosamine sulfate. These studies both demonstrated a clear benefit for glucosamine treatment. There was not only an improvement in symptoms but also an improvement in joint space narrowing on radiographs. This suggested that glucosamine, unlike pain relievers such as NSAIDs, can actually help prevent the destruction of cartilage that is the hallmark of osteoarthritis. On the other hand, several subsequent studies, independent of Rottapharm, but smaller and shorter, did not detect any benefit of glucosamine.Due to these controversial results, some reviews and meta-analyses have evaluated the efficacy of glucosamine. Richie et al. performed a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials in 2003 and found efficacy for glucosamine on VAS and WOMAC pain, Lequesne index and VAS mobility and good tolerability.Recently, a review by Bruyere et al. about glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for the treatment of knee and hip osteoarthritis concludes that both products act as valuable symptomatic therapies for osteoarthritis disease with some potential structure-modifying effects.

Re-StoreTM: Cellular functions depend upon the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a high-energy phosphate which exists in all our cells. ATP is the primary energy source for many metabolic processes. CoQ-10 is absolutely essential to the ATP production process. When CoQ-10 levels are insufficient cellular energy production suffers. CoQ10 appears to be particularly important in supporting the heart muscle which beats over 100,000 times each day. Without adequate levels of coenzyme Q10, the heart muscle can become weaker and less efficient at pumping blood through the body. CoQ-10 levels are reported to decrease with age and to be low in patients with some chronic diseases such as heart conditions, Muscular Dystrophies, Parkinson's disease, Cancer, Diabetes, HIV/AIDS. Levels of CoQ-10 in the body can be increased by taking CoQ-10 supplements. The commonly sold form of CoQ10 is Ubiquinone which is reduced by the body after absorption to the usuable form, Ubiquinol. As the body ages, it produces less and less CoQ10 and becomes less efficient at converting CoQ10 to Ubiquinol. Studies indicate that Ubiquinol is absorbed very efficiently by the body and may be equal to as much as eight times that of common Ubiquinone supplements. The Masters Plan Ubiquinol 50mg soft gelatin capsules ensure that your body gets the required levels of CoQ10 in a readily assimilated form.

Glucosamine and chondroitin provide natural support for the structural integrity of joints and connective tissue. Combining our organic, super-concentrated aloe vera with the glucosamine and chondroitin helps your body absorb more of the nutrients. Desert Harvest Glucosamine/Chondroitin is IC-friendly, shellfish-free, and Kosher. Is joint stiffness from osteoarthritis holding you back? Glucosamine/chondroitin may help to keep your joints flexible, mobile, cushioned, and lubricated by replenishing the synovial fluid that keeps your cartilage, ligaments, and tendons soft and flexible. Studies have shown that the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin provide the building blocks for the development of healthy cartilage and connective tissue. Research has shown that glucosamine can provide the same anti-inflammatory action as ibuprofen and even better relief from pain. When combined with chondroitin, both nutrients reduced inflammation better than ibuprofen. That same anti-inflammatory action has been used to help Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The GAG layer of the bladder is primarily made up of glycosaminoglycans like chondroitin and glucosamine. It is theorized that the GAG layer of the bladder is "leaky" in people with IC/PBS and nonbacterial prostatitis. If that is the case, then supplementing your diet with glucosamine and chondroitin might replace the lost protective molecules in your bladder. Several food supplements containing these nutrients have been studied in IC/PBS patients with positive results.

As numerous historical documents - on fireclay, papyrus, or paper - testify, alkaloids, nitrogen contining natural substances, have been companions of mankind from ancient time. Valued as drugs and stimulants, some species are also feared because of their addictive potential, and often it seems impossible to distinguish these effects unambiguously. The chemistry of alkaloids has been captivating chemists for ages and generations. This is the first comprehensive reference work providing a concise overview of structure, properties, and history of these unique and fascinating substances! The volume is organised into three main sections. Part 1 examines the chemically relevant aspects by means of carefully selected examples. After a structural classification, structure elucidation (including common pitfalls) is discussed. Moreover, chiroptical properties and synthetic pathways are detailed. Part 2 is devoted to biological and biochemical aspects. It rationalizes chemotaxonomy and biogenesis by means of examples (indole and 1-benzyl isoquinoline alkaloids) and presents details about the functionality of several alkaloids produced by plants and animals. Part 3 finally describes the cultural and historical significance of the most important alkaloid sources. Exciting anecdotes and historical reports illuminate the use of hemlock, ergot, opium, tobacco, coffee, and cinchona, to name only a few.The unique and comprehensive explanation of the most important features of alkaloids makes this book a compendium valuable not only for experts but also for the layman interested in pharmacy.

S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-E) is an amino acid that is used in the treatment of many conditions including: depression, liver disease, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, schizophrenia, migraine headaches, and to increase bile flow. Other names for SAM-E include: S-Adensyl Methionine, L-Methionine, Adomet, and Ademethionine. Over 150,000 Americans and many thousands of Europeans use SAM-E supplements regularly. SAM-E was discovered in Italy about 5 decades ago (Cantoni, 1952). However, the first clinical study of SAM-E's use for depression was not completed until the 1970s (Agnoli et al., 1976). At that time there were no usable oral preparations and early studies had to use intravenous [IV] and intramuscular [IM] delivery. SAM-E was first introduced into the U.S. dietary supplement market in 1999. It has been used with success to treat depression in Europe for the past 20 years. SAM-e also treats: Persistent feelings of sadness or emptiness, Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, Feelings of Guilt and worthlessness, Loss of interest in pleasurable activities (incl.sex), Sleep disturbances, Fatigue, Loss of energy or enthusiasm, Difficulty in concentrating or making decisions, Ongoing physical symptoms (headaches, digestive disorders, etc. that don't respond to treatment), Crying, tearfulness, Poor appetite with weight loss, Overeating and weight gain... Experts in the field of joint diseases confirm the positive results of recent research studies of Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Patients given this combination as a supplement show significant improvement during treatment of osteoarthritis. 21 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease that is caused by the breakdown of cartilage that protects your joints. Without this tissue, bone rubs painfully against bone, causing tenderness, swelling, and stiffness. Glucosamine and Chondroitin, two of the many components of cartilage, are found in some foods and can also be made in our bodies, but taking an oral supplement can be the fastest way to ensure your body has the required amount for effectiveness. Though researchers aren't sure exactly how the combination works, it appears they allow the body to repair and replace damaged cartilage, while reducing pain and inflammation. Jenasol's Glucosamine Chondroitin provides 200 mg. of Glucosamine and 100 mg. of Chondroitin.

Chondroytamine HCL is a powerful combination of Chondroitin
... Read more
Chondroytamine HCL is a powerful combination of Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine HCL that may help alleviate, and possibly repair, the damage done to the joints and bones by osteoarthritis, trauma, and malnutrition. Chondroitin Sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) found naturally in the body. It is important to maintaining elasticity and integrity of many types of body tissues, including the walls of blood vessels, connective tissue and cartilage. Cartilage is found in joints and between vertebrae. As we age, the water content of cartilage decreases, causing problems in joint mobility. Chondroitin Sulfate helps to attract and hold fluid within cartilage tissue. Hydration of these tissues helps to maintain the compressibility, elasticity and fluidity of joint movement that are characteristics of healthy joints. Having adequate amounts of fluid in these tissues helps keep cartilage healthy in two ways: it acts as a shock absorber within the joints of the body, thus protecting cartilage from being worn away by the bones; and it carries nutrients to the cartilage. The cartilage in the joints of the human body has no blood vessels, so it must receive its nutrients from tissue fluid. Glucosamine HCL is the key precursor in the formation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). GAGs are complex carbohydrates that are found in the various types of connective tissues in the body. Glucosamine provides the building blocks necessary for the maintenance and repair of cartilage, connective tissues and ligaments. It stimulates production of synovial fluid to lubricate joints. It inhibits the destructive cells that cause inflammation and may help to rebuild damaged cartilage and deteriorating joints, and to improve joint lubrication. With some 50 million Americans affected by joint and bone disorders caused by osteoarthritis, Chondroytamine HCL may help reduce, and may even reverse, the damages done by this painful condition.
