The MI Audio Blues Pro Overdrive Guitar Pedal's no-nonsense circuitry offers effects that are very 'immediate'. There are no internal trimmers, so that with the Blues Pro you get a very easy-to-use pedal, with the classic configuration of Gain, Tone and Volume. The MI Audio Blues Pro is a bit compressed, which gives the pedal a bit of extra punch. Blues Pro is an overdrive that also sounds throaty in high gain settings.In the Fuzz mode the tone control becomes more of a 'sponge' control. With the tone all the way up, the Blues Pro pedal sounds like a louder version of the original. As you turn the Tone control down, the response time of the Blues Pro increases. This sounds particularly cool on chords. Turn the MI Audio Blues Pro Overdrive effect's Tone control all the way down, and the tone takes a second or two to settle.

The Double Hotcake has two Hotcakes 'A' and 'B' in one box. The A is a Bluesberry version, and the B a normal version (the "Bluesberry" voicing of the Hotcake has a slightly less buzzy edge at the onset of distortion, and often works well when guitarists have amplifiers with extra extreme treble boost, like some Marshalls for instance). Both have three knobs and a footswitch as with regular Hotcakes. If both Hotcakes are switched on together, the A Hotcake drives the B, and its controls are bypassed, but an extra Drive control is switched in to adjust the its gain. There is also an extra clipping stage and a reduction in low frequencies to make for a better lead sound in the high gain situation. The A Hotcake has the usual buffered bypass (the circuit becomes a buffer in bypass mode), while the B Hotcake is hard bypassed using gold plated contacts.

The Death by Audio Robot is the latest in a line of sonic mayhem inducing pedals from our boys in NYC. The Robot brings Death by Audio into the low-fi, bit-crushing business. This insane pedal is a lo-fi pitch transposer that produces sweet, 8-bit ring mod effects to your guitar. The Robot features four operational modes; Normal, Octave Up, Octave Down, and Arpeggiator. The Octave Up and Octave Down modes are pretty self explanatory. The Control knob, when fully clockwise, yields either octave up or down depending on the mode. When turned down, it bends the pitch of the octave down so you can dial in the exact tone you want. In Normal mode the Robot acts as a lo-fi fuzz pedal and the Control knob bends the pitch down from clockwise. The amount of fuzz can be further toyed with using the internal gain control. Now the fun part. The Death by Audio Robot also features an arpeggiator. The pitch will arpeggiate in a sequence and the Control knob will adjust the speed of the arpeggiation. It also makes a slight change in the pitch, allowing the arpeggiator to go higher. With all this fun, who needs anything else? Arpeggiation, whacky robotic nonsense, and 8-bit fuzz fun are all jam packed together in the Death by Audio Robot. The vibrato offers a smooth pitch-varying effect that you can adjust from subtle to radical and everything in between. The tremolo adds beautiful sine-wave tremolo typical of classic tube amps. But by cranking the depth you can get square-wave chopping effects that add more bite to your sound. The best part is that both vibrato and tremolo can be enabled together and controlled by a single speed knob. But if you thought that was enough, the fine folks at Kilpatrick Audio decided it might be fun to be able to switch the vibrato for something a bit more dramatic. The vibrating band-pass filter fits the bill with a high-Q sweeping filter. The depth affects the frequency range of the filter sweeping. And of course it can be used along with the tremolo effect for incredible sounds. All of the effects are produced in stereo, so that you get two synchronized, but different channels which sound great when played through two amps. The Vibro Man is the first Kilpatrick Audio pedal with a touch-sensitive mode. By enabling the Touch footswitch, the depth of each effect reacts to your playing. For instance, start with a subtle vibrato that gets deeper as you play louder. This really brings new possibility to effects which are conventionally non-reactive. This is the first book about the rapidly evolving field of operational rate distortion (ORD) based video compression. ORD is concerned with the allocation of available bits among the different sources of information in an established coding framework. Today's video compression standards leave great freedom in the selection of key parameters, such as quantizers and motion vectors. The main distinction among different vendors is in the selection of these parameters, and this book presents a mathematical foundation for this selection process. The book contains a review chapter on video compression, a background chapter on optimal bit allocation and the necessary mathematical tools, such as the Lagrangian multiplier method and Dynamic Programming. These two introductory chapters make the book self-contained and provide a fast way of entering this exciting field. Rate-Distortion Based Video Compression establishes a general theory for the optimal bit allocation among dependent quantizers. The minimum total (average) distortion and the minimum maximum distortion cases are discussed. This theory is then used to design efficient motion estimation schemes, video compression schemes and object boundary encoding schemes. For the motion estimation schemes, the theory is used to optimally trade the reduction of energy in the displaced frame difference (DFD) for the increase in the rate required to encode the displacement vector field (DVF). These optimal motion estimators are then used to formulate video compression schemes which achieve an optimal distribution of the available bit rate among DVF, DFD and segmentation. This optimal bit allocation results in very efficient video coders. In the last part of the book, the proposed theory is applied to the optimal encoding of object boundaries, where the bit rate needed to encode a given boundary is traded for the resulting geometrical distortion. Again, the resulting boundary encoding schemes are very efficient. Rate-Distortion Based Video Compression is ideally suited for anyone interested in this booming field of research and development, especially engineers who are concerned with the implementation and design of efficient video compression schemes. It also represents a foundation for future research, since all the key elements needed are collected and presented uniformly. Therefore, it is ideally suited for graduate students and researchers working in this field.

Simple and straight forward, just gain, tone and volume. The MI Audio Crunch Box has some similarities to the Tube Zone, in the sense that the design is based on a multiple clipping architecture (the signal is clipped 3 times). However, there are significant differences which make these two pedals sound quite different from each other. The Tube Zone distortion is designed to have a very 'broad' sonic footprint. The Crunch Box distortion on the other hand has a strong mid-presence to it, similar to the great British amps.
