2012 American Library Association Notable Children's Book. Meet the inventors and innovators who defined American music history. A radio repairman named Leo Fender imagined a solid-body electric guitar. The inventor of 3-D glasses, Laurens Hammond, envisioned an electric organ in every home. And a German carpenter named Steinway immigrated to New York City with the dream of designing the greatest piano in the world. From Steinway's pianos, Bob Moog's synthesizers, and C.G. Conn's band instruments to Avedis Zildjian's cymbals, William Ludwig's drums, C.F. Martin's guitars, and more, noted music writer VanHecke offers a fascinating, insider view of the personalities and perseverance that led to some of music's most important innovations - from classical to jazz to rock. Includes more than 200 photos, many rare and vintage, plus source notes. Full color. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book will be donated to SupportMusic, a music education advocacy effort seeking to improve access and opportunity in music and arts learning. Support Music is a public service initiative of the NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by the National Association of Music Merchants. Its mission is to advance active participation in music-making.

In the mid-Seventies, the French jazz-rock fusion style was not completely defined. The country didn’t have much to compete with the american leaders of the style such as RETURN TO FOREVER and WEATHER REPORT. In those days, one of the most famous French guitarists since his participation to TRIANGLE, decided to take up his chances... Martial "MIMI" LORENZINI founded EDITION SPECIALE in 1975, with keyboardist-singer Ann BALLESTER, bass player Josquin TURENNE DES PRES and drummer Jean-François BOUCHET-D’ANGELY. Even in their first album "Allée Des Tilleuls" (1976), a perfectly mastered music can be heard, which made those four musicians famous. Thanks to a number of incredible talents that blended in a very strong personality, the band could create their personal vision of a Progressive jazz-rock sung in French (But with a few tracks in the English tongue). The song and funk aspects were also present there, even though they tended to disappear on the band’s other works. "Aliquante" (1977) is not about a famous Spanish harbour: this adjective describes a rhythmic concept based on very complex tempo cuts, dear to EDITION SPECIALE. That second effort shows an almost-instrumental side one, designed to match the best American jazz-rock fusion bands of the time, WEATHER REPORT and THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA at the top of the list. The occasion to become familiar with the subtle and energetic drumming of the newcomer Alain GOUILLARD, a real virtuoso, to be classified alongside Bill BRUFORD or Alain GOZZO. An an exclusive bonus, the Musea reissue includes the models for two tracks, to be released twelve months after on the third and last studio album: "Horizon Digital" (1978). Without any doubt one of the most important French bands of the Seventies !

American Rockgrass raconteurs Hayseed Dixie release their seventh album 'No Covers', a new full length album of all original material. And this time around, the term "original material" means both that they wrote all the songs themselves and also that you've never heard anything quite like it. Well...honestly when have you ever heard anything quite like a Hayseed Dixie album? Seven years of touring the world being the hardest working band in Europe has its own impact on a band and their musical approach. After playing nearly every festival, big or small, in Europe and watching every other band employ drums and electric guitars, the Hayseed boys decided they wanted to put a bit of that instrumentation into their own music. Says singer Barley Scotch, "We really wanted to stick a finger in the face of all those people who once called Bob Dylan a Judas." Thus, half of the songs are acoustic and half are fully electric. Rockgrass, the musical genre created by Hayseed Dixie, has finally come full circle. And the lyrics may surprise people who have written the Dixie off on previous albums as merely a slapstick novelty act. For example, the first song 'Bouncing Betty Boogie' could be about chatting up a loose girl in a bar … or it could be about sarcastically yet sincerely daring a land mine to dance. We could say that this album heralds the ascendance of a major new songwriting voice, but by the time history makes that decision conclusively, all of us currently alive will be dead, so draw your own conclusions and strike the pose of Ozymandius if you must

The Empirical Labs DS Duo includes the Empirical Labs EL 500 Plus VPR-compliant, horizontal rack power supply loaded with two EL-DS DerrEssers. Not just for vocal processing, the high-frequency limit function of the DerrEsser makes it a high-frequency compressor, great for general smoothing of high frequencies in a very musical way. Have harsh-sounding cymbals or overly scratchy hard-panned guitars? Use the two DerrEssers in stereo (linkable via the EL500) to smooth out your drum overheads or smooth the guitar fizzand that's just for starters. Empirical Labs EL-DS DerrEsserThe DerrEsser from Empirical Labs is a multi-function dynamic filtering device, in an API 500 series module format. Perhaps the most flexible de-essing tool available, in its basic "DS" mode, the DerrEsser is an effective, level-insensitve de-esser that adjusts the high frequency gain on overly trebly or spiky vocals, or other source. By using a crossover technique, and dividing the audio up into a high frequency range and a low frequency range, the EL-DS DerrEsser can use its Voltage Controlled Amp to turn down comparatively high or harsh high frequencies in an extremely musical manner. However, unlike other de-essers, the ELDS is not limited to just de-essing, and allows for multi use of its circuitry. It also features a high-frequency limiter that can almost entirely remove unwanted fret and finger noise from dynamic acoustic guitar performances, as well as tame aggressive, diaphragm-shaking vocals, in a very musical way.Besides Bypass, there are essentially four modes of the DerrEsser:DS Mode (Bypass Button IN, all other buttons OUT). As a de-esser in the DS mode (HF Limit OFF), one can set the threshold to tame harsh S's (sibilants) that result from an overlybright singer or from EQing to make a vocal sound aggressive and clear. In this mode, the dynamic action is "level insensitive," as the detector circuitry compares the high-frequency content to the low-frequency content. Overall signal level doesn't matter at all. When there is enough HF compared to LF, the threshold is exceeded and the DerrEsser starts to turn down the frequencies above the crossover point set by the Frequency control on the front panel. Great care was taken to ensure this DS section meets the Empirical Labs reputation for originality and ease-of-use by employing the latest technology VCA, specially selected for glitch free, distortion free, and noise free performance. The time constants were carefully selected and the corner frequency is user adjustable with a high-performance active crossover.HF LIMIT(Bypass Button IN, HF LIM IN, all other buttons OUT). In this mode, the DerrEsser looks at the general level of the high frequencies only. Think of it as a high-frequency compressor. If there is enough high-frequency content to exceed the threshold, then gain reduction occurs. It's level sensitive, but responds much more to high frequencies. This mode can also act as a de-esser but is more of a general high-frequency smoothing device. The HF limiter is probably the first carefully tailored soft knee HF limiter in existence. Both the DS and HF LIM modes offer what is perhaps the highest performance of any similar device.HIGHPASS(Bypass Button IN, Listen IN, HP/LP OUT, HF LIM doesn't matter). By using the "LISTEN" Function, the user can employ the superb filter circuitry inside the DerrEsser to process their audio. With the LISTEN button IN, and the HP/LP switch OUT, the user will be hearing the high frequencies that are being controlled with the dynamic/compression circuits. The corner frequency is adjustable by the Frequency knob. Once the LISTEN switch is engaged, all bar graph LED's should light as indication.LOWPASS(Bypass Button IN, Listen IN, HP/LP IN, HF LIM doesn't matter). With the LISTEN button IN, and the HP/LP button IN, the user is now listening to the low frequencies, those not affected by the VCA and dynamic/compression circuits. This is a 12dB-per-octave filter whose c

Dope's 4th album "American Apathy", includes a stronger than ever line-up with Edsel Dope pulling double duty on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Virus holding down the lead guitar position, Brix Milner on the bass guitar and madman Racci Shay on the drums. In many ways, "American Apathy" is reflective of Dope's early work. The lyrics are pointed and politically charged while the music is powerful, raw and oftentimes just plain ugly. "American Apathy" pushes Dope's guitar driven roar to the edge while still possessing the signature elements that separate Dope's sound from the rest. Contains 9 remixed tracks from Dope's 2005 "Amerocan Apathy" album along with a DVD featuring 9 incredible live performances.
