Looking for a guitar that is truly unique? The Musicmakers Reniassance Guitar has that 17th Century look, evoking thoughts of travelling bards from days gone by. Always poplular at Renaissance Festivals. The solid mahogany soundboard gives this guitar a rich, full-bodied sound! The soundboard bracing has been update to allow the guitar to handle the tension of steel strings. Guitar-making is no simple craft, but the Musicmakers Renaissance Guitar kit is probably the easiest design to begin with because of the way we join the neck to the body. Building a Musicmakers kit is a great experience from start to finish.

Zachary Taylor has based his stunning Vihuela design on the instrument that is displayed in the Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesús in Quito, Ecuador. A truly remarkable piece, it is thought to be a relic of Saint Mariana de Jesús. Very few existing Vihuelas are known of but the most famous one is the so-called, ‘Guadalupe’ Vihuela in the Musée Jacquemart-André, in Paris. It was probably made around 1500 by an apprentice luthier or cabinet maker as a test piece. Comparatively large, with a narrow neck suggests that whilst appropriate for playing single-note continuo, it would not be suitable for solo performance repertoire or accompanying a vocalist. Although the body of the Vihuela was shallower and lighter than the modern guitar, the scale length was often much longer. The strings were of gut and silk and the frets, which were tied around the neck, were also of gut. Tied frets represent a strong reference to the original instrument but are sometimes troublesome. Changes in humidity, temperature, and clumsy handling can cause changes in the fret location, making replacement difficult for an inexperienced player. For these reasons, the designer, maker and suppliers decided on metal frets as a standard feature. Customers who prefer the more traditional tied frets may request them to be fitted when an order is placed. With six ‘courses’ of strings, the Vihuela has them arranged in pairs and these are usually tuned in unison, although variations were known that used ‘octave’ tuning on the lower-pitched strings, similar to the lute. When used in the musical sense, the word ‘course’, refers to more than one single string and possibly as many as three. Music for the Vihuela was written in tablature, as stave notation was not used for fretted strings in those days. Tablature works well, provided the tuning of the strings is known. Many players prefer tablature

Monique Buzzarté and Ellen Fullman began working together in June 2005. These collaborative compositions are rooted in tonalities that unfold with unexpected possibilities. Buzzarté s trombone navigates and merges through an infinite array of distinct overtones from Fullman s Long String Instrument. With slight timbral variations and pitch juxtapositions, sympathetic resonances articulate overtone colorations and threads of resultant melodic fragments emerge and intertwine In 1981, at her studio in Brooklyn, Ellen Fullman began developing the Long String Instrument, in which rosin-coated fingers brush across dozens of metallic strings which has been compared to the experience of standing inside an enormous grand piano. Fullman s work explores the influences of sympathetic resonance using a unique notation that choreographs sonic events to occur at specific nodal point locations along the string-length of her instrument. The music has a multi-dimensional quality: threads of resultant melodic fragments emerge and intertwine, unfolding with a natural logic. Fullman has recorded extensively with this unusual instrument and has collaborated with such luminary figures as composer Pauline Oliveros, the Kronos Quartet, Keiji Haino, Susan Alcorn and Sean Meehan. Numerous interviews have been conducted with Fullman, including: the Wire (June 2004); and she has written articles that have been published in Experimental Musical Instrument (1985 and 1998), MusikTexte (Cologne 2002), and MusicWorks (Toronto 2003). Fullman was awarded a Japan/U.S. Friendship Commission/NEA Residency for Japan (2007); a DAAD Artists-in-Berlin residency (2000-2001); her music was represented in The American Century; Art and Culture, 1950-2000 at The Whitney Museum, and she has performed in numerous venues and festivals in Europe, Japan and North America. Fullman's release "Ort", with Belin-based collaborator Joerg Hiller, was selected as one of the top 50 recordings of 2004 by The Wire. Her collaboration with percussionist Sean Meehan at Instal 2006 was the number one downloaded track from the festival and has been released on Cut (Switzerland). Monique Buzzarté, trombonist/composer, is an avid proponent of contemporary music, commissioning and premiering many new works for trombone alone and with electronics in addition to creating her own compositions. Ms. Buzzarté's recent recordings include Fluctuations with Ellen Fullman (Deep Listening 38), Noah Creshevsky's To Know and Not to Know (Tzadik 8036), Zanana's Holding Patterns (Deep Listening 30), Dreaming Wide Awake with the New Circle Five (Deep Listening 20) and with the Arditti Quartet, John CAGE: Vol. 19 - The Number Pieces 2 (Mode 75). Since 1983 her New Music from Women: Trombone project has supported the expansion of the trombone repertoire, and in recognition of her long history of commissioning and premiering new works Meet the Composer selected Ms. Buzzarté for their Soloist Champions program. An author and educator as well as a performer/composer, Ms. Buzzarté has published research on the brass music of women composers and received artist residencies as a composer and for the development of a unique interactive performance interface for the trombone. Her advocacy work for women in music included coordinating efforts which led to the admission of women members into the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1997. Ms. Buzzarté is certified to teach the meditative improvisation practices

he Sitar is the most popular melody instrument in classical northern Indian music with sarod and tanpura - the long neck musical instruments of the lute family. The Sitars that are being made nowadays can be divided into two main categories - Ravishankar style and Vilayat Khan Style. Different styles of music are played on both types. Sitars in the Ravi Shankar style usually have 2 resonance boxes, 13 sympathetic resonant strings and 7 playing strings. 4 of the 7 playing strings are played as melody strings and comprise 4 octaves. ON the other hand the Sitars in the "Vilayat Khan Style" have only one resonance box on principle. There are 11 sympathetic resonant strings and 6 playing strings, 2 of which are played as melody strings over a range of three octaves. The design is unsophisticated and decorations and inlays are sparse. Would you like more information on Sitar? Check our main catalogue of sitar or get in touch with us OR speak to us. ... Read more
Master luthier and designer Zachary Taylor has created this truly elegant and classic instrument — the 'Guitarino'. Guitarino is the designer's Anglicisation of 'chittarino' and it's also been called the guitarra, guiterne, machete and braguinha. One of the smallest and earliest members of the guitar family, it made its appearance in the mid-16th century when several respected composers wrote for it. Taylor based his special design on a guitarino made in 1646 by Giovanni Smit. Smit's instrument is currently on display in the Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna. Some features of that original one were changed for practical reasons. The Smit has an arched back made of separate strips, similar to the lute, but this feature was replaced with a flat back to reduce production time. Separate strips were retained for the sake of decoration but some costly cosmetic ornaments were excluded as they contributed little to the guitarino's sound or functionality. Originally, strings and frets were made of gut, which were tied around the neck. When used in the guitaristic sense, the word 'course', refers to more than one single string and possibly as many as three. A common modern example may be seen in the mandolin and bouzouki. On the guitarino, two strings in a course may be tuned in unison or in octaves. Where octaves are used for the lower strings, usually one of the strings is tuned an octave higher than the normal, fundamental, string. Various tuning methods of the Renaissanc

This Dunhuang brand Guzheng model includes a beautiful printed landscape scene in a classic Chinese style. The nature scenery is an important cultural theme found in traditional Chinese art. Such landscapes convey the importance of having a harmonious relationship with nature. The mountains have a spiritual undertone because they help people metaphysically speaking reach the highest points of the universe. Two figures in boats depict the rapport between man and sea. This beautiful scene is outlined in a creamy-gold tone border. This Chinese Guzheng is constructed from a type of exotic (Dalbergia) Rosewood from Myanmar masterfully selected by the artisans from Dunhuang. . Rosewood is a hardwood that creates a warm tone when played and offers a nice base. It offers a rich red-ish brown color in appearance. Other materials include: solid brass hinges, strings that are German steel wrapped nylon. Instrument weight: 15.30 lbs. Dimensions: 64" long, 13.5 inches across the bottom, 12" across the top and 2.75" depth. Guzheng, (pronounced 'Goo-Zheng') is a stringed instrument, plucked by hand (often with a pick). Part of the zither family, it is an ancient Chinese musical instrument that dates back to Qin dynasty (before 206 BC). In fact, the first part of the instruments title: "Gu" means 'ancient' in Chinese. Its history goes as far back as the Spring Autumn Warring State Period where it was widely played in Qing State area, and that's why it was previously named Qing Zheng. The body shape of Guzheng is a combination of oblong and oval. The head and tail of Guzheng are fixed with bridges on which strings are lined across, and each string is also supported by a peg (which is movable) so that the pitch of a string can be fixed and adjusted.

In his native Mali, Kasse Mady is universally esteemed as one of the greatest jelis (hereditary musician-historians) and a living treasure of the Mande people. His recordings with National Badema, a brace of solo albums (Fode and Kela Tradition,) and star turns with Ketama (Songhai and Taj Mahal (Kulanjan) all did well by his vast, sinuous baritone-to-tenor, but this scrumptious acoustic set is a revelation. It was recorded studio-live in his home village, with his brother and other longtime collaborators sitting in. The 14 tunes are a lexicon of styles the region is famous for, but a couple of playful, Latin-tinged confections also turn up. Kasse Mady's vocals are heard at their robust, sensitive best, sparring with rippling plucked strings, exuberant wooden flutes, mixed choirs, and battalions of handclaps and earth-shaking, woodsy percussion. The session is further graced by the ardent, unassuming bass of Buena Vista Social Club's Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez. --Christina Roden

You're three tracks into The Cost before you find a song, "The Rise," that opens with anything but singer Glen Hansard's voice as the first thing you hear. The beauty is, you're waiting for the voice, with its hints of Cat Stevens's tonality and its utterly distinct Irish lift. It's Hansard that provides the Frames with such a rising vibe, the sense of a band always lifting off, pressed higher by Colm Mac An Iomaire's violin. Mac An Iomaire's strings slip and slide in the thickets of guitar, playing exceptional cat and mouse both when the guitars are clear and crisp and when they're crashing furiously. The Frames wouldn't claim to write epic tunes, but over and over the songs build toward ecstatic sonic events. Witness the hushed open to "People Get Ready" how it morphs into a violin and guitar-grit blast of wind-blown energy or the distortion-scoured hum behind Hansard's lone voice on "True" launching a languorous, piano-driven backdrop as the singer lets loose a first-class yowl--the stuff of anguished beauty. --Andrew Bartlett

Trevor s Candyrat Records debut album Entelechy explores new possibilities for the guitar through the use of a custom chromatic kalimba (African finger piano) that Trevor designed with help from various builders. The kalimba mounts on the surface of the guitar, allowing the steel tines and steel strings to resonate through the guitar body. The album focuses on solid melodic ideas, interspersed with the harmonies and rhythms of the kalimba, bringing a fresh sound to the acoustic guitar. Trevor is one of the few post-Michael Hedges guitarists who has managed to incorporate that vast repository of innovation while having an artistic voice strong enough to steadfastly avoid imitation...a guitarist we will need to pay attention to... Will Ackerman, Grammy winning founder of the influential new age label Windham Hill Records. ...driving, tender and powerful all at once... David Kahne, Grammy winning producer (Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Tony Bennett, etc.) Sharp, absorbing and beautiful meditations for guitar that will get your mind moving in new ways. The sitar is a plucked stringed instrument predominantly used in Hindustani classical music, where it has been ubiquitous since the Middle Ages. Artists such as Ravi Shankar have popularized this instrument around the world. It derives its resonance from sympathetic strings, a long hollow neck and a gourd resonating chamber. Sitar has a varying number of strings from 17 to 23. It has three to four playing strings and three to four drone strings. The approach to tuning is somewhat similar to other Indian stringed instruments. These strings are plucked with a wire finger plectrum called Mizrab. There are also a series of sympathetic strings lying under the frets. These strings are almost never played but they vibrate whenever the corresponding note is sounded. Sitar is constructed of wood Teak, Mahogany or Tun, Gourd, Metal and Bone. **[PACKAGE CONTAINS; Electric Sitar Music Instrument Length: 42 To 44 Inches approx., Width: 12 To 14 Inches approx., Height: 3 To 4 Inches approx., Weight: 2.5 To 4 KG approx., One Sturdy Storage Case, One Mizrjba, FREE! 'OM' stands for "Orchestra Model," but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Yet flatpickers also find it appealing, and when the graceful cutaway is added these OMs are often used by lead players who routinely explore all 20 frets much as they would on an electric guitar. The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.
