The virtuoso book introduces, for the first time in this series of books, exercises with held notes and fingering and rhythmic variants. The held notes keep the hands in a balanced position, which helps to strengthens the knuckles and finger joints so that arm weight delivered into the key bed is more easily supported. The fingering variants train the muscles for the many fingering patterns found in the repertoire. The rhythmic variants place each note of the pattern alternately on the beat so that the weight of the arm is shifted to each finger evenly.Chapter I contains patterns of two, three, four, and five notes, and thirds, sixths, and octaves. Chapter II develops the movement of the thumb used in the playing of scale and arpeggio passages. In Chapter III the double-note exercises are especially valuable for the balance of the hand, developing strength in the knuckles, finger joints, and the muscles between the bones in the hands. The extension exercises in Chapter IV provide training for playing chords, broken chords, and arpeggios. Chapter V has the same patterns of double-note thirds, sixths, and octaves as Chapter III, this time with the addition of held notes. All the books is this series were written based on these concepts:Training the MindDeveloping technique is not complicated or difficult. It is our thinking about technique which is complicated and difficult. There are no short cuts to developing piano technique. But there is a way to develop technique which is easier and more effective. The exercises by themselves will do the work in developing your technique. You cannot fail. Practice and learn them one at a time sequentially from the beginning of the book to the end. Do not make these exercises difficult by using too much energy and effort. Keep everything simple. That is all you have to do.Brain PowerDeveloping technique involves not only the movement of the fingers. As we learn the physical sensations of playing the piano we are training our thought processes and stimulating activity in the brain. It is necessary to repeat over and over what you practicing. This will develop thought patterns and you will subconsciously remember what you have learned. This is why it is important to practice every day. These exercises have been written with a scientific basis. At the moment when our fingers are ready to depress the keys an electric impulse occurs in our brain and then the cells signal to each other and command the muscles to move. The speed of the fingers depends on the speed of this synaptic delivery system.PhysiologyTo develop speed you have to develop a quick response in the synapses. If you stimulate your brain as much as possible by concentrated repetitions, the synapses will become stronger and will respond more quickly. This will increase your ability to learn and remember the physical sensations of playing the piano. The exercises in this book have many repetitions which continually stimulate our synapses and the nervous system. .Arm WeightTo develop technique we also have to have knowledge of human physiology. For example, the muscles in the arm are connected to the fingers. When we depress the key these muscles contract. As soon as we feel the bottom of the key bed and hear the tone we have to release these muscles with a conscious effort. Then we can control how we play the next note. You just cannot play fast and train your muscles like a machine without thinking. This will never create artistic playing.Virtuoso Piano Technique has been written for piano students from age 9 and up, piano majors, teachers, piano hobbyists, and concert pianists. The entire book can be practiced in 90 minutes in a moderate tempo. All of the piano technique books by Terrence Rust should be practiced in the order of their difficulty. Learn the intermediate book first book before practicing the virtuoso book. After that begin work on the advanced book.

Why does a piano sound like a piano? A similar question can be asked of virtually all musical instruments. A particular note - such as middle C - can be produced by a piano, a violin, a clarinet, and many other instruments, yet it is easy for even a musically untrained listener to distinguish between these different instruments. A central quest in the study of musical instruments is to understand why the sound of the "same" note depends greatly on the instrument, and to elucidate which aspects of an instrument are most critical in producing the musical tones characteristic of the instrument. The primary goal of Physics of the Piano is to investigate these questions for the piano. The explanations in this book use a minimum of mathematics, and are intended for anyone who is interested in music and musical instruments. At the same time, there are many insights relating physics and the piano that will likely be interesting and perhaps surprising for many physicists.

The Official Guide to Steinway Pianos is a compendium from the archives of renowned piano maker Steinway & Sons to encompass - for the first time - reference material and details from 16 decades of Steinway piano making in New York. Thirty years of research and compilation by authors Roy F. Kehl and David R. Kirkland bring to light with thorough precision the production history of Steinway pianos. A "family tree" of Steinway production history provides in-depth, complete historical listings of every model produced and their characteristic details, with first/last serial numbers and production dates, individual scale studies for major models, highlights of important changes and events in Steinway piano production by serial number and date, a gallery of Steinway decalcomania by years, a table of Steinway patents, and tables of historic Steinway steel wire sizes. The Guide is an indispensable tool for piano technicians and dealers who need to determine the relationship of a particular Steinway piano within the historical framework of the company's overall production, as well as a means to help identify, establish the provenance of, and verify and preserve the originality of any given Steinway piano. Through compilation of pinpoint information, the Guide offers an accurate and fascinating resume of Steinway & Sons' ongoing production history.

Stylish and compact, Korg's microPIANO digital piano is charming and designed like a grand piano even complete with an opening lid! The microPIANO features Korg's expressive 61-key Natural Touch mini-keyboard, carefully designed to provide true playability. The bold, smooth grand piano sound uses the same stereo samples as Korg's flagship digital pianos, generating full-bodied tones with depth and character. This instrument provides pure piano enjoyment and will enhance your living space simply by its presence. The Korg microPIANO comes well equipped with 61 vibrant and authentic sounds. Keyboard sounds go beyond the traditional pianos to include electric pianos, harpsichords, accordion, celeste, organs, clavs, toy pianos, and more! Outside of the keyboard family, there are also flutes, strings, harps, bells, and mallet percussion sounds - marimbas, vibes, steel drums, even kalimbas and music boxes! Of these 61 sounds, 25 are Short Phrase Sounds that can automatically generate phrases simply by holding down a key. For example, these include arpeggiated piano patterns or even organ sounds complete with phrases from famous pipe organ compositions. Sounds such as toy piano and steel drum offer phrases mimicking the playing techniques unique to those instruments, and can be used as sound effects or as creative ideas. Using these Short Phrase Sounds can allow even the novice player to easily create a satisfying performance. The Korg microPIANO contains 40 demonstration songs featuring mainly classical compositions. Listen to these as demo songs, or enjoy them as background music in your room, just as you would listen to a CD or MP3 player. The demonstration songs can be played using the pre-assigned sounds, or you can play the same song using a different sound.

In her own words: ''Fully realizing a musical piece does not mean only playing the right notes with the right rhythms; the accurate and correct interpretation of all the so-called ''secondary signs'' - dynamics, articulation, and phrasing - is part and parcel of this task. This principle, in itself as obvious and banal as it is often ignored, is naturally valid for every type of music, but comes to the forefront in the case of Schönberg. Often in the pages of the Austrian composer, almost every note has a different articulation, dynamic indication and phrasing; in places where the texture of the musical discourse becomes thickly polyphonic, each note of every voice has a different ''intonation'', a different sonority, a different quality of attack, in other words ''speaks'' with a different accent, with a different intensity and character. To completely trust the musical text, to let oneself be guided at every step by it, seeking to ''reproduce'' as faithfully as possible all its signs, without giving up even when this seems impossible (Schönberg's scores abound in dynamics and phrasings that verge on the unperformable: sforzatos on rests, diminuendos or crescendos on single notes, thickets of dynamics that would require ten fingers capable of producing ten different sounds), but trying to understand the underlying musical intention that the signs try to communicate - this has constituted the guiding principle of my approach to Schönberg's piano works. The biggest discovery as been that just this approach, which might be rebuffed as excessively philological, has brought me to the heart of Schönberg's compositions. In a paradox typical of music, only such apparently narrow limits as given by the musical score open up the profound depths of a free and imaginative interpretation that is not arbitrary, but which asymptotically approaches the ''truth'' of the musical text. And, even more importantly, only by respecting and complying with these aspects of the text, ''secondary'' only in name, one discovers the romanticism of Schönberg's music. A romanticism so exasperated - the afterglow of a 19th century romanticism by now dying - that the usual musical indications of expressivity cannot convey it; such an arch-romanticism that each note is signed, tormentingly and assiduously, with indications that do nothing but speak to the insufficiency of language and of writing - of every language and every writing, even of the most absolute, the musical language - to express the idea and the thought, the sensation and the still indistinct feeling. Such a concentrated and dolorous romanticism, so essential, that it takes your breath away, a romanticism of the mind and of the heart, in which to feel and to think are not distinct. My hope is to have been able to communicate through this disc, at least in part, the expressive and romantic force of Schönberg's music - I would feel I have in some way performed a small service.'' -- Pina Napolitano

While John Cage never wrote anything you'd call Classical Top 40, his music up to 1950 is far more accessible than the random and chance-influenced pieces he created later on. These mysterious, wispy pieces sound as though they were written for a small ensemble of ghostly percussion instruments, although they are played by a single performer playing a piano with various gadgets attached to the strings. You need the clear sound of this recent digital recording to appreciate the music, and Karis keeps everything moving without overstressing the rhythms. --Leslie Gerber

Mikhail Chekalin - HISTORIC EDITION (Electronic Music. 1970s - 1980s. Original Recordings), Vol.1 - A Well-Prepared Electric Organ. Mikhail Chekalin - electric organ, open piano, voice. Selected Recordings of 1974-1982.Mikhail Chekalin has been one of the most influential modern composers of the last 35 years in the former USSR, now Russia. His work was experimental; in fact, his raison d’être was specifically to break new ground stylistically. He worked outside the boundaries of established culture, while at the same time breaching its borders when possible to expose his art and music to the people at large.Over the span of his long career, Chekalin has produced some 30+ works that range the sonic spectrum for Post Pop, to free jazz, electronic, and Post Symphonic. During the 1980s, he made a breakthrough of sorts when the state owned Melodiya label released several albums of his music. For the most part, however he created art and produced music underneath the radar.Between 2005 and 2010, MIR Records in the USA released eight productions devoted to works by Chekalin. The label produced four CDs and four DVDs bringing his work to an entirely new worldwide audience. The MIR label now embarks on an ambitious new project by beginning the release of a series of CDs, titled the Historic Edition, featuring previously unreleased material from his personal archives.Apparently the very notion is reminiscent of and, by the same token, inwardly opposed to Bach’s “Well Tempered Clavier” Volume 1’s title composition manifests “A Well-Tempered Electric Organ”. In total disregard of the established tendencies of mid 70s – early 80s, these compositions, even though electronic, have been recorded without either synthesizers and/or sequencers or over-dubbing. These works have been produced solely by means of an electronic organ, various sound effects and vocalizing. This same tradition ‘electronic without synthesizers and/or sequencers’ is being paid homage to by “Pianophonia” piece dating back to the year 1974; that, with a certain exception of ‘live’ fragments, is over-dub-free as well. However, this unique and unifying concept by no means imposes any restrictions on the range of stylistic expression, covering the whole span from avant-garde, progressive and psychedelic rock up to melodic and blues elements. Symphonic counterpoint rhythms are already traceable in these compositions as well as tranceadelic messages and movements that are of similar character with those usually associated with M. Chekalin’s well-famed outstanding “The Meditations for Prepared Electronic Organ”, released at Melodiya. As the chance would have it, “The Meditations…” have found their way into the hands of Franco Donatoni, as early as the very beginnings of the eighties, and have won his exceptionally brilliant approval. As the illustrious maestro would have it, Chekalin should have produced a radical shift, by altogether abandoning a melodic principle and pursuing an avant-garde tradition of atonality and sonority.Conversely, as far as some eminent Soviet composers of the epoch have been concerned, Mikhail should have done just the opposite – to retrieve melodics and tonality, while the point was that works under discussion happened to be definitely avant-garde. Chekalin, as it were, has done neither. Apparently, the composer has chosen to follow in Charles Ives’ tracks and to leave the alternative of avant-garde principle versus melodic one exactly as a question – a question without an answer. This disc features unreleased works by Mikhail Chekalin from the dawn of electronic music era, way back in mid 70s – early 80s, their electronic multidimensional vision sweeping far and wide, way wider than an apparent line in the electronic music landscape as seen by most. This product is manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media.
