One of film director Alfred Hitchcock's early efforts was the 1935 classic movie mystery The 39 Steps. Using only four actors to play more than 100 parts, Patrick Barlow adapted the film script into a comic play that opened a successful run in London's West End over 70 years later, on September 14, 2006. Although it was a straight (i.e., non-musical) play, The 39 Steps employed lots of background music, most of it borrowed from the original film and other Hitchcock movies, which seems to have given Reynold D'Silva of Silva Screen Records the idea for this album. Silva Screen specializes in re-recordings of film scores, usually done by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and the label has been ingenious in finding ways to recycle the new recordings on a series of albums. It already had in its library versions of the Hitchcock film music, and so assembled this compilation, billed on its cover as "music from & inspired by the hit West End show." Singer/songwriter and producer Bob Crewe kept quite busy through the 1950s and into the mod and swinging 1960s, scoring numerous hits with his solid production on several successful Four Seasons and Mitch Ryder projects. He got to step out into the public eye on his own a bit in 1967, though, when he heard a jingle demo for a Diet Pepsi spot called "Music to Watch Girls By" and quickly rushed into the studio to record a big-band, horn-driven instrumental version of it. Released under the group name the Bob Crewe Generation, the track went Top 20 on the Billboard charts, and Crewe went on to record three albums of similar fare (under the titles Music to Watch Girls By, Music to Watch Birds By, and Let Me Touch You) on his own DynaVoice imprint before the decade ended. This compilation collects the best cuts from those three albums, plus scattered soundtrack pieces and the 45 single-only "Miniskirts in Moscow" to make what amounts to an hourlong cocktail party for time traveling swingers. While Grails' later experimental epics wring hypnotic sounds from organic instruments, Lilacs & Champagne's self-titled debut refines that approach some and applies it to a smattering of obtuse samples and sound sources. Influenced deeply by the fractured hip-hop productions of Madlib and J-Dilla, the record was written and performed primarily using an Akai MPC sampler. While the vocal fragments at the close of "Lilacs" or disorienting, truncated dual snares of "Everywhere, Everyone" suggest this influence, the songs take on a far more kitchen-sink approach than Dilla or Madlib's streamlined psychedelic beats.
