This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. No Use For A Name: Rory Koff, Tony Sly, Dave Nassie, Matt Riddle.Recorded in January 2002.Personnel: Karina Denike (vocals); Jennifer Walker (violin, cello).Recording information: Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA (01/2002-??/2002); Motor Studios (01/2002-??/2002).Photographer: Kate Powers. No Use for a Name has built its reputation on a solid foundation of hard-hitting punk, flooding its songs with melodies and fueling them with signature stop-start rhythms that thunder across the grooves, come to an abrupt halt, then pound off again in hyperdrive. Thus, it's a bit of a shock to find Hard Rock Bottom opening with a brief acoustic number, and although nothing else clocks in at this dawdling pace, a handful of mid-tempo numbers are scattered about as well. Equally startling is a cover of Sinéad O'Connor's "This Is a Rebel Song," a pusillanimous duet between Tony Sly and guesting chanteuse Karina Denike. While the Pogues l

* First anthology from Indonesia s Heaviest Psychedelic & Progressive Funk Rock group * Limited edition ultra-deluxe CD & LP releases * 15 tracks & over 70 minutes of mind-blowing music * Double-LP housed in old school gatefold jacket * CD housed in old school gatefold sleeve with insert * AKA featured on Now Again s Those Shocking Shaking Days compilation (2011) Originating from Indonesia s second largest city, Surabaya, East Java, AKA is an acronym of Apotik Kali Asin. Starting off their careers as an infamous local band with notorious crowd pleasing antics, AKA regularly went through repertoires of Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Three Dog Night before finding a significant audience outside their home city. It was soon after that the band signed with a Jakarta based label, Indra Records that they started producing a steady release of albums, including 11 studio LPs and a couple of compilations. The lead singer Ucok Harahap - who famously idolizes James Brown- is perhaps the most notorious rock performer in Indonesia s pop history, infamous for brandishing (amongst others) coffins, whips and stripping naked on stage during performances. Sadly due to recording English based, heavy-psychedelic/progressive funk, AKA s music failed to gain popularity at the time of it s release. Today, AKA is recognized as one of Indonesia s top rock bands of all time, and for good reason. With this release, we are proud to offer an Anthology encompassing AKA s heaviest & funkiest moments.

Thus, it might be said that there was something riding on the follow-up, not only in career terms, but also in the sense of musical credibility. But that doesn't s

Includes liner notes by Sylvie Simmons.THE BEST OF GREAT WHITE is a collection of hits from 1986-1992.A rather skimpy ten-track best-of that overlooks highlights from ...Twice Shy and inexplicably includes only one song from Hooked, a flaccid remake of the Small Faces' fiery "Afterglow." Still, key tracks like "Once Bitten, Twice Shy," "Rock Me," and "House of Broken Love" are here, and casual fans will be satisfied simply by having Great White's best-known songs on one disc. ~ Steve Huey

Liner Note Author: Bob Garcia.Styx's entry into A&M's 1987 Classics series is one of the best, since it doesn't have too many questionable album track selections, instead preferring to pile on hits from "Babe," "Grand Illusion," and "Come Sail Away" to "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Mr. Roboto," and "Don't Let it End." Yes, there are a couple cuts missing here and there, but for the most part, this has nearly everything a casual fan needs. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Van Halen: Sammy Hagar (vocals); Eddie Van Halen (guitar, keyboards); Michael Anthony (bass); Alex Van Halen (drums, percussion).Recorded at 5150 Studios, Hollywood, California. In the late '80s, both Van Halen and David Lee Roth were at their commercial peaks, with the two camps competing fiercely against each other for Top 10 dominance. While lacking the overall crunch of earlier albums, OU812 does take the band into credible pop/electronic territory. Showing that party rock can grow and develop, the album contains some premium musicianship."Mine All Mine" features Ed Van Halen's continued use of synthesizers and is an introspective tune about believing in one's self. "When It's Love" is a catchy power ballad that continued the band's streak of Top 10 hits, along with "Finish What Ya Started," with its good-natured country licks. "Feels So Good," a 180-degree turn from the heavy rock of the band's early days, is a keyboard-driven pop ditty. The band doesn't totally stray from its roots though, as "Black And

Spanish '60s obsessives the Gurus are still living in the past, but judging from the sound of their fifth album, Now, it's entirely possible the band might make it into the '70s yet. Psychedelia and garage rock are still two of the hallmarks of the Gurus' sound, but Now adds a healthy portion of simple hard rock to the mix that wasn't there before, and the thick power chords that fuel "In the Queue," "Jokes," "Parasites," and their cover of the Doors' "Roadhouse Blues" suggest that Blue Cheer or the MC5 may have entered their collective consciousness. Longtime Gurus fans need not fret -- the band's taste in Who albums is still defined by My Generation rather than Live at Leeds judging from "He Was a Man," classic psychedelic sounds inform the opener "Yer Space Rocket," and the revved-up folk-rock of "Second Scene" is one of Now's most gloriously tuneful moments. But if the hard rock influences don't define this album, they have an undeniable impact on the whole, and the production and engineering sounds sharp

Fastway: Dave King (vocals, harmonica); Fast Eddie Clarke (guitar); Pete Way (bass); Jerry Shirley (drums).Bluesy hard rock and boogie was still around in the early 1980s, even as hair metal started grabbing all the attention. One such British band, Fastway, was led by two veterans: Motorhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke and Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley. They recruited unknown singer and harmonica player David King and released their successful self-titled debut in 1983. Fastway had no full-time bassist at this point, and whoever played on the album isn't credited. King was a virtual Robert Plant clone, and to say that much of Fastway bears more than a passing resemblance to Led Zeppelin is an understatement. Despite its derivative nature, this is sloppy, unrefined fun. Overall, Clarke's guitar work here is more diverse than what he did in Motorhead, yet the blistering opener, "Easy Livin'," is full of his jackhammer riffing. The tune is actually catchy too, and King's exuberant vocals can't be ignored. "F

Guitarist George Lynch formed the Lynch Mob to continue the hard-rock tradition of his previous band, 1980s hair-metal giants Dokken. Though Lynch periodically disbanded the Lynch Mob to pursue a solo career and a Dokken reunion, the guitarist resurrected the spinoff band for the 2003 album REVOLUTION, which presented reworked versions of both Dokken and Lynch Mob classics. REVOLUTION LIVE captures Lynch Mob performing the album's 13 tracks in concert, offering revved-up versions of songs like "Tooth and Nail," "Tangled in the Web," "She's Evil But She's Mine," "Kiss of Death," and more.

Culled from a concert/MTV broadcast recorded at Orlando's Hard Rock club, Montreal's Simple Plan ably show here why they've bubbled to the top of a crowded pack of contemporary punk-pop contenders. No hand-wringing, emocore angst or mock street ‘tude for vocalist Pierre Bouvier; he's too busy prodding the crowd into good-natured sing-alongs of band hits like "Addicted" and "Worst Day Ever" like a hyperactive cheerleader. His bandmates thrash and harmonize away behind him with equal zeal, interjecting an infectious energy to even the band's darker moments – though "darker" is a decidedly relative term in the impossibly effervescent Simple Plan universe – like "Me Against the World" and "God Must Hate Me." Simple Plan bristles here with enough boundless energy to make Green Day envious, even if they scrupulously avoid the latter's penchant for provocative smarts in the bargain. But then songs like "Crazy" (also featured here in an earnest acoustic version exclusive to this set) underscore that Simple Plan succeeds by tapping into the timeless, innocent hopes and fears of its largely teen audience with music that's both punk anxious and bubblegum sweet. --Jerry McCulley
