What's remarkable is how little an effect the stated departures had on the sound of the album. Yet another in a long line of British indie bands equally inspired by symbolist poetry, Scott Walker, and the early albums of Roxy Music (see also Suede, the Auteurs, Divine Comedy and half of the Cherry Red Records artist roster between 1981 and 1986), singer/songwriter Anthony Reynolds and his seven-piece band Jack have the moves down cold. Reynolds' pretentious lyrics airily name-drop cool influences ranging from Vladimir Nabokov and Pablo Picasso to Nico, but add little else of interest. This is, in fact, quite common in this style of music, and therefore not a particular handicap. On the upside, the band, led by multi-instrumentalist and arranger Matthew Scott, is quite good. Scott's melodies are varied and graceful enough to make songs like the delicate, genuinely pretty "Lolita Elite" and the atypically driving, almost rocking, "Love and Death in the Afternoon" work. Ignore Reynolds' silly lyrics (his voice, encouragingly, isn't half bad) and The Jazz Age is an enjoyable listen akin to mid-'80s Eyeless Minimize

This second volume of Buddha Lounge delivers another round of mildly intoxicating new age grooves, continuously mixed for maximum chill. But while there are some standout moments, the album is hampered by an overriding blandness. Almost exclusively instrumental, most of the 13 tracks sound basically the same, despite being from different Sequoia Records artists. Despite its reliance on Jan Hammer-style synthesizer beds, Ginko Garden does spice "Blossoms from India" with touches of tabla and traditional instrumentation, and Jaya Lakshmi's "Sundara," with its upbeat fusion of Latin and Indian styles, suggests the accessible worldbeat pop of Shakira. New age veterans, brothers, and founders of the Sequoia label, Steve & David Gordon contribute two pieces to Buddha Lounge, Vol. 2; neither is particularly noteworthy, offering familiar takes on the new age groove formula. Recording information: 1995-1997.In 1995, at the age of 15, Conor Oberst left the Omaha, NE, group Commander Venus and began working on the material for his solo project, Bright Eyes. A Collection of Songs gathers the results: 20 compositions recorded during the singer's mid- to late teens. Even at a young age, it's clear that Oberst is an extremely talented songwriter, seemingly incapable of penning a bad tune (except in the odd case when you sense he didn't try). Despite his obvious gifts, however, there are plenty of sour moments throughout A Collection, but they are almost always the result of the singer's delivery, rather than an inherent fault of the song. Oberst walks a fine line and occasionally his tendency toward unrelenting honesty chases him over the edge. His tone turns bitter and you sense that he can't stand to bare his soul without couching the sentiments in a combination of anger, sarcasm, and parody.
